I sprayed some chloraseptic spray into the back of my throat, shined my iPhone light directly into my mouth, and carefully used a qtip to look around the folds of my tonsils and I did indeed find a tonsil stone right where the itch was. I think this is what was causing my cough. Used the qtip to clean it out.

Hi hope this helps. I get the tickle and then gag. I think its related to food maybe over eating reflux. Gagging and a almost vomit cures it. I used to throw up as a kid from over eating. I should ask my doctor too.

I had a tickly cough after a really bad cold. It was so bad it made me gag. I was recommended to use a herbal mixture called Bronchosan Pine cough mixture. It was amazing after a couple of doses the tickle had gone down and now completely gone. Please try.

I have been coughing for the last 6 weeks, so many symptoms on this page is what I'm going through. it started with a cold and I ended up getting bronchitis and went to emergency, was given antibiotics and steroid syrup, anti allergies and singulair to open up the airways.i was even taking nebulizers, then it got a little better after finishing my course of all those meds but the sudden itch and cough is still there. comes and goes. the doctor feels its mainly an allergic cough now. I really hope it stops. cause its making me exhausted :( the whole hacking cough that makes my eyes water and I end up peeing, even hurt my muscles around my ribs.

Yep, I think so many people don't realize it's often parasites. Pinworms are way more common in the sinus cavity than what is discussed.

Everyone! I've found something that's worked for me so far! Pepto Bismol. I got the idea after reading one post here saying that they thought the itching could be from acid reflux, and I do remember reading something ages ago saying that colds/flus can lead to acid reflux. Not sure if it has anything to do with body chemistry while sick or the excessive coughing during the beginning of the cold/flu that aggravates the chest/throat. Maybe acid gets lifted up from through the esophagus through coughing and/or sleeping and the post nasal drip glides over the irritation and causes the itch, is my best guess.

I've been having a lingering, hacking, itchy/prickly, mucous-y cough from the flu for the past two weeks now. The same cough as some of you have described; I'd get a single needle-like prick on the side of my throat, and I had better cough my brains and lungs out or else I'm in for watery eyes and making a fool of myself anyway. I've NEVER understood why this happened to me only, and I'd notice it especially at work when flu season hits because I'm usually the one "dying" longer than anyone else with my residual cough. As soon as I feel a tickle I'd try to find my way to the bathroom or an empty hallway to try to get it all out. I was always feeling I had something in my chest, and if I didn't, I'd still cough until I'd feel like vomiting. I'd worry my lungs could collapse! My go to for the symptoms would just be staying hydrated and sucking on cough drops...But that still wouldn't work 100%.

...So something clicked in my head to try the Pepto pills I had laying in my medicine cabinet. I figured why not, but didn't think it was actually going to work. And it worked!!! I haven't coughed in the last 5 hours as badly as I have even earlier today (which was literally every few minutes). One of the meds I like taking while I have a cold is Sinex nasal spray...I'd rather deal with a runny nose than plugged even if it's still annoying either way. But the reason I bring this up is that the almost instant clarity/relief is akin to having taken Sinex for my throat and chest. It's as though everything dried up a bit and I can actually inhale deep breathes through my nose AND mouth without fearing I'm going to cough all over my computer screen in attempt, lol.

I'm even TRYING to make myself cough right now to see if there's a difference (usually that alone would start a hacking spell!), and I don't feel like I have so much chest congestion to even *want* to cough out anymore!

I can't believe this worked. And the post nasal drip is almost gone! It makes me wonder how much of these symptoms were even from the flu at the end when I've sadly been taking cold/flu meds to no avail. Would love to hear if this works for anyone else.

Wow, this happens to so many people. Like all of you, I get (especially when I have a cold but I've had it for years) an itch on one side of my throat, then my eye on that one side starts to water and I just hold my breath and wait it out so I don't go into the cough-til-you-want-to-vomit stage. Afterwards I'll get a little phlemg and have to clear my throat. It's been happening for years and years. Maybe two to three times a month and worse when I get a cold. Sometimes I'll get it during work, anytime, anyplace. Most of those times I get it at night. Right now I have a residual left-over itch from it happening five minutes ago and some phlegm. I've talked to people about this, one friend has it, my boyfriend jokes about me talking about it (he thinks it's sweet I do research).

I've read tons of boards and this is the most complete one I've found so far. However, everyone is at a loss. I don't see how acid reflux is connected to this. Sometimes I feel it might be a dust particle settling on the throat.

I've kind of lost hope. Doctors are clueless. Maybe it's just something one has to deal with, but in my case, 3 times a month is bearable, yet how about those folks that get this several times a day?

Hello everyone ... I was researching my own cough tonight, same thing about feeling like there is dust in my throat which leads to uncontrollable coughing and gagging. I noticed a couple of you mentioned vitamin c has helped you. I found another website that talked about Vitamins A, B and C and how it fixed her chronic cough. I don't know if it works, but I am responding to this in case any of you are still suffering through the cough thing. I am going to try it, but I don't think I will remember to come back to post my results to this site.
If you managed to get rid of your cough, let me know how you did it please!
