Sorry to hear that so many of you are having BV and yeast infections because of mirena, but also happy to know I am not the only one.  Has anyone had their boyfriends end up with UTIs or other infections because of your infections??  Mine is having problems and I am wondering if these can be sexually transmitted.

I have had the Mirena for almost 4 years now. I had my son at an early age and was allergic to a certain chemical in the normal birth control. After my son, my OBGYN convinced me that Mirena was my best option, which I agreed to. I looked at the pros and cons, but at this time there were hardly any cons. Had in placed in and everything was great for 2 1/2 years. No problem! Then, around my 3 year mark I noticed severe pain on the left lower part of my stomach, right above my hip. I then was having severe back pain and started seeing a doctor for it. The pains came and went but I started noticing how itchy I was getting and this milky white discharge that would not go away. When that happened while I was pregnant I knew I hade to take pro biotics and my AYZO, and it would go away. But this time no matter how much pro biotics I took, AYZO, those annoying yest infection kits, and diet change... Nothing would happen. I am a very clean person and very health conscious. I went to the doctor and she said I had a yeast infection and BV... No way dodo brain, I knew the yeast infection, but BV. I never had anything in my life like that! Well she gave me meds said it will be good, and ignored my question about my IUD. My next period passed and I thought awesome its fixed. NOT!! The smell started happening, making me very self conscious, thinking everyone can smell me, thick yellowish white cottage cheese looking discharge, and severe itching and discomfort. Well let's get to the end of this story now... 13 yeast infections, 17 BV, and 5 doctors later led me to where I am today. No left overie and only a 20% chance to ever get pregnant... And now I am actually ready and wanting to have kids. I found out even though this IUD is the best "birth controll" method, the consistent BV and yeast infections can lead to sists on overies and infertality. ANY WOMEN USING MIRENA I AM BEGGING YOU TO HAVE IT REMOVED RIGHT AWAY!!! WOULD HATE TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO ME TO OTHER WOMEN!! PLEASE HAVE IT REMOVED AND FIND A LAWYER!!!

I AGREE WITH YOU, THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE EVEN BEEN AN OPTION FOR WOMEN.

I have only had the Mirena IUD in since February and have already experienced having BV and I believe i currently have another infection from the IUD. Im so frustrated with the IUD as I have out of a month only about a week where im not spotting or have my actual period. The doctor doesnt want to take it out however even after I continue to get BV and yeast infections since IUD's are "expensive birth control for only 3 months of birth control" whoich i think is ridiculous since this is my body not theres and it cant be good for me to continously get infetions in my vagina! Also since the insertion I have been told that my cervix has tilted.

I've had the mirena since march 2012 in I've been struggling with odor, discharges, and itch. I recently went to my GYN for this mirena to be removed in he still suggested I take some antibiotic. Because my right side have sharp pains an cramping. I went to the doctor June 13 in I have bv right now as I speak reading this I'm for sure making an appointment to get this thing removed. I've had not had sex in so long well to be honest I shouldn't be having it in the first place. But I've losted all my confidence it sometimes smell threw my clothes. If anyone is considering or planning to get the IUD say no in run away because this thing is the DEVIL.

Ive had my mirena for about 2 yrs now. Ever since the mirena was placed ive have nothing but problems. My problems are on and off cramps, backache, hair loss and bacterial infection. After 1 yr of being on mirena my routine pap result came back abnormal which turned out to be HPV. A few months after i noticed a strong foul odor (really embarassing) got tested to find out that i have BV. I was like WTF is going on wit my body. My husband was suspecting that i was cheating on him and contracting all these problems. Its been a living hell. I suspect the mirena is the cause of my body malfunctioning. I just had a follow up pap done last wk to see if the HPV still exist. Results pending at the moment. Im so nervous about the outcome. After the result im making an appt and having the mirena remove. Theres pros and cons for the mirena. I love that it prevent pregnancies but i hate the side effects.

I'm so glad I've read this!! I've had the Mirena for 4.5 years now and only discovered last week how it made my life miserable without me even knowing about it. I've also experienced the itching and smell and soreness, but mostly and more severely after having intercourse, and the severity fluctuated so I never thought much about it, I thought maybe it was because of the sex or hormonal changes after having a child...? The odour was so bad at times that I could not stand up from where I was sitting without being overwhelmed by it..... it was SO embarrassing. Because of these symptoms, I wasn't keen on having sex due to the odour and sensitivity, that made me go and see my GP. He just said it was an infection and when I asked him what caused it, he just said that there is no definite answer and that it's not just contractable from having sex...?????? and that me and my husband should both get treatment, otherwise it would not clear up. After treatment it was about a month when I noticed the odour again. The itching and soreness was gone, but the smell was back...... My husband was getting suspicious, because where else would I get an infection from.... and he noticed the gradual decrease in our sexual activities over the years, especially the past year. I could not explain to him what was happening, so it googled causes of vaginal infections and my eye caught the name Mirena..... And much to my surprise when I dug a little deeper and found out that it's the cause of all my problems... things that I've written off to stress and my body adjusting after child birth...... hair loss, depression, ache, abdominal pain after intercourse, infections, etc.... things I never experienced before. I'm making an appointment to have the Mirena removed.... I can't wait for things to go back to normal. Thanks for your post!

Ok, Now I don't feel so alone. I had the Mirena in for 3 1/2 years I had a BV once a month after My second year it was one of the most gross things ever. The bad thing is My Husband is in prison so I haven't had sex in about 4 years. So I new it could be that, I told my doctor it had to come out She really didn't want to remove it she kept on saying,"Some women just have Bv and the Mirena doesn't having anything to do with it." I've been reading on this for years now to no something wasn't right. I got it remove 4/23/13. It's 7/1/13 and guess what I have a Bv ugh I'm so frustrated but My doctor said this should be the last one so she gave me this cream to use for 10 days then twice a week for the next 3 months. She also said My PH was off wack. I'm praying it is because its just nasty. I'll post in Oct. to let you guys no. The Mirena is the Devil...

I got my mirena removed about 6 months ago and I am still getting bv infections. Before I had the mirena I had one bv infection my whole life. From the time I got my mirena put in until now...I've had about 8 along with some yeast infections here and there!!!! I DO NOT suggest ANYONE to get the mirena. I had complication after complication!!

Hi all!

I am so glad I found this forum! I had the IUD placed in March 2010 and was doing really well with it until about a year ago. I was only with one other person before I started having problems. I thought it was maybe due to stress; I moved from Colorado to Virginia in December after I finished my BS degree. But it's July now, and I'm not under the same amount of stress I was before. I also thought it may have something to do with having anal sex. My boyfriend and I weren't exactly careful about switching from anal to vaginal sex until I got a horrible yeast infection/UTI. Now we stick with one area, and make sure to clean thoroughly before and after. I am also a diabetic, so I'm more susceptible illness. My sugars have been in tight control though.

I have quit using fabric softener and only use fragrance/dye free detergents. I usually only wash with water down there, and I rinse thoroughly before I get out of the shower. I don't lounge around in a wet bathing suit, and I sleep without undies on to let everything air out.

I am sick of having to deal with this stuff every freaking month around the time of my period. I've tried all kinds of OTC and prescription meds. I have an OB/GYN appointment tomorrow; I'm seriously considering having this thing pulled out. Has anyone gone back to birth control pills after the Mirena??
