I want to add too that corticosteroids will most likely clear up the rash--as they would any rash related to the histamine response.

My rash returns when I stop using the cream. It would be good to find the root of this problem, rather than just treating the symptoms.

Hi, Its Emma178 who started this topic way way back.  I tried the spirulina, dropping sweetners, increasing water intake and still rashes!  Currently I am not dieting and haven't been trying low carb diets knowing that rashes start.  In October I got one hive come up, since then its been ramping up to full blown hives all over.  The doctor has me on allegra (US name) non sleepy antihistamine during the day and a more powerful one at night.  Been referred to a dermatologist and waiting for the NHS to kick in.  Since I am not losing weight or dieting this is very worrying for me.  At least when I knew it was the diet I knew how to instantly stop the rash!  Been really bad since January and the only explanation the GP comes up with is that the body reacts to something and then it just cant stop reacting.

The prescription drugs are helping keep it at bay, I want to stay away from steroid creams as long term use is not advised.

What kind of corticosteriod cream did you use? My rash did not come back after i stopped using the cream. I was just pleased that i could finish the diet with clear skin. For me i feel the root is directly related to being in ketosis and research seems to suggest so. I've just come to the conclusion that the only way to avoid the rash is to stay out of ketosis.....the underlying mechanism remains a mystery. Theres just so many types of immune cells to target.

Emma again!- This time I am not using the corticosteroid creams and last time they didn't help so I am not keen on trying them again.
I can feel the start of them coming on about 7pm in the evening (not everywhere though) , then I take the more powerful antihistamine at night.  If I'm really unlucky and they come up on my feet or hands the itchyness  can wake me at night.  In the morning I will have hives everywhere.  Now I have been on the drugs for a month and some days I will have hardly any hives and some days I will still have loads in the morning.  If I am good and do not scratch them they go away at about 2pm in the afternoon.  The next day they appear somewhere else.
Without the drugs, the hives come in the same pattern and unless they are particularly big hives or very inflamed will go away by the afternoon.
For this reason of not really knowing where they are coming up and them eventually disappearing on their own corticosteroid cream does not seem like a good thing to use.  It is a steroid and prolonged use, as I understand, is not good for you.
3 months now with full blown hives every day!  Not happy.  Think I might start a low carb diet and then at least I would be losing weight with it!

i too, have been on atkins for about 3 weeks when the hive-like rash started. i've been exposed to numerous mechanic-type fluids. have you?

I have been trying to do the Atkins diet for a few weeks, and have had urticaria outbreaks twice, as well as  angio-edema.

Trying to figure out how to keep losing weight without being covered in rashes, etc.

Sounds like you guys on the atkins are bringing on alergy related uticaria if you carry out a food journal and see what you have eaten when it is at its worse you maybe allergic to something you are eating. I suufer from chronic idiopathic uticaria and I have this every day no matter what I do I take levocitrizine which is a strong antihistamine which helps. I have been trying to loose weight with this condition for years and had no luck and had to go down the drastic surgery lane which didnt help really. Im now looking in to thyroxine as when you suffer from uticaria your thyroid production gets low but blood reults come back normal and after many years of research found that increasing t4 production may help loose weight while having uticaria.

Emma again.
No Atkins and nine months+ of urticaria!  I saw a consultant dermatologist (my fourth one!).  Current feeling now is salicylates!  I am banned from fruit and vegetables, tea and herbs.  I thought he was crazy but it seems to be calming down.  The problem is trying to stick to the elimination diet without going crazy!
Not sure why Atkins would have bought this on in the first place.  Maybe because I ate strawberries when I could for my sweet treat?
Im currently in the states and corn starch is my enemy which appears in everything.  So spots are on their way backt.  Since I am allowed eggs, meat I might start back on atkins!

I started Cambridge plan just 12 days ago and developed a terrible itchy rash. Looks bumpy but I just have to scratch to get relief. My son adviced me to stop the diet immediately and observe things and see. So I will go on a vegetable diet and control my portions till it's better? Anyone has any answers?

Thanks for sharing your experience

I am on a limited carb diet and ketosis occurs quickly if I DON'T CHEAT.  With the ketosis, I also get the rash and insanely itchy skin. I use a lot of moisturizer, LOAD UP ON WATER to help flush the toxins more quickly, and after a week or so, it subsides to a manageable inconvenience.  The first episode was accompanied with open sores, soaked in tub with AVEENO powder added. . . . not much seemed to help.  After a couple weeks that horrible event subsided.  A couple of times with a breakthrough on the diet, getting through a plateau, the itching recurs but I haven't had the rash so bad.  I will try the Spirulina.  Anything that brings relief is totally welcome!!

Thanks for the info!

I did the HCG diet 4 years ago and after 10 pounds lost I became with a horrible itchy in my neck then my stomach and my private parts as well and I notice that before I have my period it is more has been very difficult all this years. I visit many doctors, change detergent, monitoring what food makes worse any way …I so happy to find a forum with information about this problem the last doctor told me that the immune system can be affected after lost weight as I did in just 20 days! I really recommend to be very careful with diets! It is better to eat with moderation and balance!

I was drinking Benadryl and I have a little release but now it is not working any more, I use many creams and it is not working as well also I'm taking a bathtube with 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of Baking soda and soak your body for 15-120 minutes without rinse your body after several can slow down the itchy BUT not desapeer at all! I will speak with my doctor about the spirulina that you guys are talking about it and I hope can help me! If someone find another cure please  post it. Thank you so much Rosie

Hi -Emma178 again

Well 1 year plus and still rashy!  I am now on so many antihistamines that the doctor is surprised I am still able to function.  Spiritulina or whatever it is called just seemed to be a Vitamin B pill, it did nothing.

Doctors are still convinced I have a food allergy and are happy to think eventually it will go away.  Looking via th eweb you can be allergic to lots of foods, salicylates, sulphites etc.  Going on the Atkins made me come out in a rash 5 years ago.  Now not being on Atkins and breaking out in a rash every day for over a year, makes me think I was stupid for doing Atkins and bringing this onto myself.  If you are reacting to a diet (rashes are reactions) you should not be doing the diet, you are doing your self harm.  Your body is trying to tell you something.  I would recommend stop doing the diet or you could ens up with permanent rash like mine.

Hi, I know this post is very old but I seem to be in the same situation as you were in when you posted this several years ago, I was wondering if your rash ever cleared up & what did you do to make it clear up?

Thanks!

I too am soo glad to have found this post! Thought it was just me but I noticed that whenever I cut out most white food carbs and go high protein, I get a rash on my legs which doesn't itch but it burns. Believe it or not what helps it feel better besides eating the carbs again is putting Vicks Vaporub or some similar cheaper product on it. I put it on before bed and It can burn at first if the rash has any broken little blisters but usually by morning it's on the mend.  So glad I am not the only one who gets this.  Now I just feel partially weird not toally weird lmao! I hope the Vicks helps you guys too.
