I, too, have been getting horrible hives.... They've covered about 30% of my torso. It all started while in a deep state of ketotis. The dermatoligist prescribe me doxipen with horrible side effects but it seems to be working. Not sure how long I'm going to stay on the meds but I wish there was a natural approach to dealing with it. I've tried eating bread and still no sign of improvment. If anyone has any advice, please share. I'm seeing an allergist next week, hopefully there will be some progress. My medicals bills are racking up, but at least I'm chipping away at my crazy deductuble (thanks to obamacare)...

To everyone with the problem, if you want to get rid of the rash you have to put more carbs in your body, atleast 50g or more per day. Sweet potatoes and rise is a good alternative. It differs from people to people how much carbs u need. The cause is still unknown, the only real cure so far is antibiotics, according to reports some people have been rash-free for atleast 3 months. Theories? Well one person have reported that they actually get the rash due to consuming eggs while in ketosis, and keeping egg intake to absolute zero will eleminate the rash after x amount of time. I will personally try this in a month after I have eaten all the eggs. Another guy wrote he has eaten lchf for a long time without eggs and now all of a sudden the rash has arrived. It appears he started to eat aioli/mayonaise and voilá. (Mayonaise contains eggs). Could this be the culprit??

FYI: Urticaria is a symptoms, not a diagnosis. The word means itchy, which is usually associated with some sort of skin reaction.

I had gone gluten free a year and a half ago with my lil brother. Within a month I had intense itching in my scalp and eyebrows a week later so did my bro. Nobody else in our house came down with this. Dry mustard washes got it out of our hair... long story. Then the rash started, tiny bumps, red patches, chicken skin, terrible itching, especially in tight clothes and worse at night.

We frantically went to Dr after Dr with no answers. Dermatologists who prescribed antibiotics which stopped the itching but it came back every time.

My bro moved back in with my patents found a dermatologist who said he had folliculitis and gave him both antibiotics and antifungals. Months later he was cured. I still got no help, got a hold of some oral lamisil and that helped immensely but a month later I felt the itching creep back.

I though what has changed, my skin is dry and it used to be great and a lil oily and I used to love that. My body odor is gone, gluten free cured my bass and lethargy.. hmmm.. the diet! My bro was eating whatever my parents were making, lots of carbs etc.

A year and a half of utter itchy hell that was so bad I often contemplated killing myself because of this unknown affliction. Fearing it was some contagious fungal infection, morgellons, staph, you name it! Yet nobody else got it.

I'm eating like I used to gas is back, my wonderful body odor, my skin oil is returning and I will never tweak with my diet again. Just eat healthy and exercise within reason.

In my experience this was fungal related pityrsporum maybe. Not every antifungal product is effective since yeast can be resistant. Especially if what you think is eating healthy is actually making you less resistant to fungus. I didn't know but I was probably really low carb and yeast can eat ketones, whatever those are.

I hope my long post helped somebody, if you get rashes for longer than a month... it's probably not some detox reaction it's something amiss.

Low carb diets tend to be high in histamine because you're eating more meat and histamine can trigger urticaria.

I think the rash is called Prurigo Pigmentosa. It seems to be caused by low insulin and/or elevated ketones.  In terms of drugs, dapsone and tetracycline antibiotics are effective. You can also just eat more carbohydrates/protein.  So long as you're consuming less than 100 grams of glucose per day you should still have some ketones in circulation.  This 100 grams would include both carbohydrate grams and around 58% of the protein grams you consume as protein also gets converted to glucose.

Same here, rash-itch VERY DESPERATE! I found out recently that I maybe somewhat gluten intolerant never really put 2 and 2 together but after trying to enjoy some real guiness in ireland got really sick after drinking 1 beer. then i recalled why i dont drink miller not sure if its gluten or barly anyway and the fact that its linked to liver failure maybe think that having "hep b" could contribute to developing the rash if somewhat my liver was deteorating. But this years resolution was to get rid of my gut my last wellness check put me @ 28.5 BMI and I had reached 200 lbs being just shy of 6 feet they tell me I should be roughly 175lbs and that gut was discusting, im basically skinny so a round ball in my midsection was very noticeable. So for the first time ever i've been able to stick to a diet/excercise structure, lost about 15 lbs in 6 months but for the first time my gut size went down aswell tryed quite a few times never stuck and got laisy and gave up. I think the fat encimes thery is more realistic than the gluten theory, im also exited to hear about the suplement that was mentioned earlier!! any thoughts? just curious why did I reach a ketosis state this time? and does liver function afect encimes and ketosis in general?

Success on minocycline hydrochloride! Hi everyone. So basically I always developed a ghastly rash on my face identical to purigo pigmentosa. It always occurred about 3 days after entering ketosis. I have spent about 7 years trying to find a cure and only when I introduced carbs back into my diet would the rash go away. Anyway, I came across this great website and decided to try one of the suggested cures; minocycline hydrochloride. So I started the course of the antibiotics on the same day i started low carbing ( fast fast diet) and it completely kept a rash from developing. I stopped taking the antibiotics once i knew my body was out of ketosis and no rash occurred. The only down side is I experienced very sleepy spells and lethargy from the antibiotics. Apart from that I am happy with the outcome. I was on the diet for 12 days.

This is very interesting. I've done very low carb diets with no problems in the past, and recently I've found that I've been having an allergic reaction... and the worst was about 40 minutes after I had a very sweet multivitamin powder drink with both Splenda and sucrolose.

100% disagree. Candida is an overused mistaken scapegoat. The benefits of a low carb diet come primarily from AMPk activation, not "candida die-off."

I have to agree with the poster who suggested that lipolysis mast cell degranulation - histamine release - urticaria. This makes far more sense.

Fat cells don't store/release yeast. They hold triglycerides and water.

its called Prurigo Pigmentosa , it is very common during ketosis for many people. I never used to get it but this time fasting I have. It seems to come on with fast weightloss. Only way I've managed to "manage" it is to up my carb intake. I typically do a 21 day water fast each year so I assure you its not strictly related to your diet, or as in my case lack there is of. I tent to find the moment Im out of Ketosis it goes away in days.
