I had a similar problem and I was able to trace it to the Splenda.

This is because of high urea content in your sweat, when you are burning fat that is filled with toxin because of the junk food you've been eating your whole life, when liver turns this fat to ketones, toxins are released and they are secreted with sweat/pee, Idk how you fix this, there is some medication I suppose for high urea content in sweat causing rashes.

I have had this rash 3 times when on Atkins and it does seem related to ketosis and not weight loss or sweat. I can stop the rash by eating carbs but I never used to get when doing Atkins when younger. The strange thing is that due to stress last year I stopped eating and dropped 40lbs in s few months and got no rash. Only when I specifically low carb does it come about two weeks after starting the diet.

hi there! I'm not sure if you are still active here but I had a question regarding the rash you've experienced. I have a similar rash to prurirgo pigmentosa that has started while on a ketogenic diet. how long after you got out of ketosis did the rash go away? did it leave any scars?

Glad to find this site! I started the Ideal Protein diet three weeks ago and during week 2 I developed an itchy skin sore on my chest that developed into a small rash. I didn't connect it to the diet but this week three more sores showed up on my leg and abdomen. This is my first time on a high-protein diet and I haven't been happy with it. I have extreme fatigue and just generally don't feel well, but each time I tell my "nutritionist" she tells me to just eat more salt and it will get better next week, but it doesn't. I've read that high-protein diets can be hard on the kidneys. Maybe the rash is a sign that the kidneys aren't keeping up. I've also read that most people with kidney disease don't know it until it is fairly well progressed. So if you've already got kidney disease (and don't know it) and go on a high-protein diet, maybe toxins start building up in the blood stream which manifest in many ways (such as extreme fatigue and skin sores)? Just trying to connect the dots, but I don't think it's worth the risk. Back to normal, healthy eating.

I have tried the Ketosis diet twice and in both cases had to stop due to a nasty case of hive. I was convinced it was due to the diet, that is, until I had another case of hives when I wasn't in Ketosis. After Saint Patricks we had a lot of Corned Beef left over and I ate Corned beef 2-3 times a day, A short time later I broke out in hives again. The common denomiator? Nitrates! When I tried the diet originally I ate a lot of bacon, ham and other processed meets with lots of sodium nitrate added. I stopped eating all Nitrates and the hive went away in less than a week. I am now in Ketosis again but have eliminated Sodium Nitrate from my diet and am hive free.

Hi,

Just wondering if you managed to stay in ketosis hive free when cutting out the sodium nitrates? Is it still working? Desperate to find a solution that isnt adding carbs to the diet.

I have been in Ketosis for over three weeks and no sign of hives, I typically got hive 1-2 weeks into the diet. ( I ate a lot of Bacon, ham and corn beef). But since switching to nitrate free bacon and getting my protein and fat from non-precessed and non-smoked meats, I am able to stay in ketosis without hives. The last time I had hives I cut out nitrates and the hives cleared up within a week. I will respond to your post again if the hives return. I am not sying it will work for you, but it did for me, I think it is worth a try.

Hi Emma, I have suffered from salicylate and amine intolerance for 6 years now. When I was first diagnosed back in 2009 I was constantly breaking out in hives but then they went away but over the years I was gradually putting on weight. Recently, one of my friends persuaded me to try the low-carb diet and one week into it I began to break out in a town meeting of hives numerous times on various areas of my body al over again. I can't eat bacon or tasty cheese as they are high in amines and I have to be careful of high salicylates foods, veges, fruits and drinks etc. Hopefully my body will settle down as I have lost 3 kg's so far.

Hi there!
this was a very enriching post and I will give my experience.

Started ketogenic diet about 3 months ago and never had problems whatsoever. Nevertheless last week started with the Keto coffee in the morning (which is zero carbs), had a long day at work and because of it could not do my workout in the gym (which is at where I normally take my shower). Unfortunatley because of that busy day I happen to just have time for my lunch, which was again keto coffee.

that same day, without knowing, this massive rash and itching all over the body appeared. i honestly couldn't figure it out where it was coming from, and after cream with cortisone, petroleum, oats and the rash did not seem to disappear, altough the red spots seemed to fade. Tho the skin at this moment is still very sensitive and for no reason i start to get hives.

From reading this forum I'm certain now the problem is the very low carb diet with less than 10/20 grams a day!
I'm absolute positive that no more Keto coffee in the morning, because as some said here, the ketone bodies are highly toxic and by being expeled from the sweat it makes the skin really irritated easily!

so for today i just bulged a nice baguette. This for sure will pull me out from ketosis, which is what I want for the next few days to heal properly. And from now on, will mantain for sure the ketogenic diet but with a minimum of 50g carbs a day and no more keto coffee in the morning!

hope this helps.

I did Atkins very successfully a little over ten years ago. Thought I'd use it again. A week and a half into it, no amount of Imodium would stop the intestinal cramps and diarrhea. During the night while sleeping, I woke up to a stinging, itchy red rash, that felt like a sunburn. The rash seemed to go away on its own, but a couple of days later, it happened again. I was also extremely tired all the time and had a lack of interest in my usual activities. I went to the internet and looked up Atkins and any associated problems and sure enough, I presented every single side effect. Now, after three days of stopping Atkins, my rash is back. I have red blotches everywhere and took a Benedryl. I sincerely hope this doesnt last long. I'm going back to normal eating, just with smaller portions, get some great vitamins, plus drink a lot of water.....

Hi Sarah. I have itching rash under my breast, a bit on my back. I eat a lot of fat.. like I eat coconut oil with spoons & drink lots water or eat atkins bar once a day. I barely eat carb. Maybe some from peanuts n almonds that's it.

Yesterday I happened to buy n drank zero coke for the first time in my recent 15 years. I sprinted like a horse for an hour, went supermarket to buy something. Then I just grabbed the zero coke n drank on the spot. I dont do this kindda choice but it just happened. I wonder if this coke caused my rash...
