I had my LEEP done today, the only thing that hurt was the shot, and it was more pressure, burning sensation then pain.  My doctor did apply some type of spray that was suppose to numb the area before the shot, I still felt the shot but that was honestly the worst part.  The actual LEEP part I knew she was doing something but there was no pain.  It took less them 30 mins and I was on my way home.  I would suggest that you bring someone with you to drive you home.  Still after 4 hours I have no pain, no cramps, no bleeding, no discharge.  If you go through this and feel the whole thing in my opinion it is time to find a new doctor.  As long as you have a good doctor that trys to make you feel as comfortable as possiable during your LEEP you will be fine.

I had the leep procedure in December of 2009 ... and I still remember it quite vividly.  I have an extremely high pain threshold and it was painful.  If you have the option of being sedated I would recommend it.  I was numbed ... and felt the whole procedure.

If men had to have this procedure they would figure something out ... I really believe that.

I just wanted to add to this because I had the leep procedure done today and last night I had read all through the Internet and saw where some said it didn't hurt and some said it was extremely painful... As for my experience, I was so terrified, and got so worked up, causing the valium to not take effect. I am an extremely nervous person when it comes to things like this. My doctor explained everything step by step and ill just say it was not bad at all... In all honesty the biopsy hurt me a lot worse.. It's uncomfortable, but so is a pap right? The two shots I had, only the first one caused a mild pinch, nothing unbearable.. Everything else from there was not painful, just uncomfortable. I wanted to just let anyone who's going to go through it, don't rely on everything the Internet says because that makes it worse on you.. Everyone has different tolerance levels, mine being pretty low, but was seriously not a big deal! Good luck to anyone going through this and remember go in positive and you'll be fine :)

Thank you for the most sane post here. I would ask those who post the most negative experience you can do not go into heavy detail. Everyone experiences a procedure different, yes it was uncomfortable that is to be expected. I am a needlephobe and to me that was the worst. My doctor had some issues getting a speculum to fit because I apparently am very tight, even after three kids. But I had it yesterday, small amount of discharge, no biggie. The colposcopy was more uncomfortable personally to me. But please do not post these horror stories, if it wad so terrible for you I would suggest a new physician.

I had the LEEP yesterday because I have stage 3 severe dysplasia and it did not hurt that bad at all. It stung for a couple seconds but nothing serious. I was however very nervous so my doctor have me Xanax before and I had to take two because I was freaking out. maybe the Xanax made me feel better. I recommend asking your doctor for a prescription for before.

I had the leep procedure yesterday. All month leading up to the procedure I was super stressed out and scared, to the point I would cry some nights. After reading all the horror stories, I expected the worse. When I Layed on the table, I just closed my eyes and breathed. The doctor was explaining what he was doing and said he was about to administer the shot. It Didnt even hurt! He did it like 4 times but after the first time I Didnt feel anything. The worse part was the speculum or whatever it's called to open you up. It was so uncomfortable... Oh and as soon as I got the shots, my heart raced like crazy. It was scary, I thought it was gonna burst out of my cheat. The doc said that's normal. The whole procedure took like 6 minutes. I had cramps afterwards the whole day but it just felt like I was on my period. Today I feel great and so relieved to have gotten it over with.

I literally JUST had the leep procedure done about an hour ago, and I normally never comment on these things.. BUT after reading horror story after horror story and literally being soo freakin' nervous and scared for the last two weeks straight I felt that I HAD to tell you guys not to read these stories!! I understand everyone is different and different experiences are expected.. But I am not kidding, I was freaking out, shaking, high blood pressure, made my mom take the day off work to come with me (and I'm 26 haha), I thought this was going to be the worst thing ever. I 100% can promise you that with my experience the colposcopy hurt WAY worse than this whole procedure did! I would way rather have this done 100 times over again than ever having a colposcopy. The medicine is weird how it makes your heart beat really fast and I felt like my head was super cloudy, but it was over so quickly! Totally feel so much relief!! Good luck everyone, don't be scared anymore!

I just had the LEEP procedure done TODAY and I think it was less painful than the colposcopy by far. The needle was uncomfortable but it was quick so it wasn't as bad as I thought. One thing I recommend is bring a book or play a game on your phone. My Doctor was more than willing to let me do something so I could distract myself. Thankfully my husband was also there so it went by pretty quick. Don't get me wrong! I am a huge sissy when it comes to pain and I was terrified! I scared myself so bad I started to shake and hyperventilate while she was working on me. But after it was said and done I was worried for nothing. After the shot I felt nothing and the machine sounds is what scares you so again bring something to distract yourself.

I had the Leep procedure done yesterday. I have HPV and high dysplasia. I was put to sleep for the procedure. When I was first informed that I needed to have the procedure I researched it on the Internet and was horrified. I immediately called my gyn and asked if I would be sedated and she said yes. The last thing I remember was being strapped to the operating table and woke up in recovery. I haven't experienced any bleeding or discharge yet. I have very mild cramping. I go back in 4 weeks for my post op visit. If you need to have Leep, gather all of the information you can about the procedure, ask your doctor if sedation is an option, read the about the experiences that other women had dealing with this, etc. Best of luck!

I had a colpopscopy and then a LEEP three months later.  Definitely ask to be put under. I had the most pleasant experience ever at the surgery center here. The nurses were all helpful and nice -- and they even numbed my hand before they put in the IV! I went in about 6am to start paperwork and preop - went back around 7-7:30 and was home and resting on the couch by 9:30. So far i've only experienced mild cramping the day of; and some light bleeding. I had the procedure on Friday....stopped bleeding Sunday (after laying around doing nothing all weekend). Went back to to work Monday and felt more sore with the bleeding starting back up. But still; nothing excruciating -- nothing worse than a period. Just uncomfortable. The bleeding is freaking me out a little tho -- it seems to be getting heavier...but hopefully it'll ease off.

I'm glad for you that this leep was such a positive experience. I strongly disagree however that people posting their negative experiences is a bad thing. For myself it was a painful experience and I am pretty good with pain. I would however absolutely do it again if necessary and I agree it's very important to be proactive with ones health and prevention. That being said- your description of needles being injected into your cervix and being cut similar to climaxing with your partner is beyond absurd.

I had the Leep procedure about an hour ago. I am 30 years old with persistent abnormal paps due to hpv. I was so nervous about getting the Leep after reading how painful its supposed to be. Right before the procedure I was given a 5mg valium. The doctor came in and told me the whole procedure wouldn't take more than 5 min. He opened my vagina with the same tools used for a pap. He then used vinegar to make the abnormal cells light up. Next he took a needle and stuck my cervix to deaden it. I felt a slight pinch like someone pinching my arm. Next he turned on the machine to burn the cells of and then he turned on a machine to catch the smoke from the burning. He began to burn the top layer of my cells and I felt nothing. I was done 3 min later. This procedure does not hurt at all!!!! I don't know how I will feel in an hour since my cervix has been numbed. I don't know why people are saying its painful. To anyone getting the Leep procedure don't be afraid. I have a very low tolerance for pain and it did NOT hurt!

hey there ladies,

i read this forum last night and just had my leep about an hour ago. it really freaked me out reading some stories about this procedure, and the best advice i can give anyone is DONT READ THE HORROR STORIES, but i know that's not likely and, if you're a worry wart like me, you will read this forum too, so i wanted to come on here and tell you ladies about my positive experience!

I was a nervous wreck, but I kept telling myself that this is important to my health and going through a few minutes of discomfort is way better than having cancer. I took a couple of ibuprofen pills half an hour before. The set-up of the equipment honestly took more time than the procedure itself.

First she put the speculum in, which is apparently a bit bigger than the normal one but I did not really notice. Then she swabbed my cervix with that vinegar solution to make the abnormal parts stand out. She then gave me the needle, which I was most worried about, but it honestly was nothing, felt like a pinch. And she said I might feel my heart race because of the adrenaline but it was already racing from nerves so I didn't notice haha. Then she takes the piece of skin off, which is like suctioned off with a vacuum, and then she cauterizes the area to stop the bleeding. It honestly took 5 mins max! I couldn't believe how fast it was over. Now I have some mild cramps but it's just like any period pains. I am in bed with some comfort food watching the kardashians haha.

So please do not get discouraged and drive yourself crazy with reading the horror stories and worrying; just remember that it is over in minutes, just breathe and talk to the nurse about something else, or listen to music, or if it helps you to hear from the doctor what she is doing, ask her! Honestly just calm down, you are SO lucky to live in a country where you have this technology and are able to prevent cancer within minutes!
