hi guys, i came on this forum to get some advise regarding after effects of the leep as I had it done about a week ago.
I was totally terrified before having it done but its honestly not as bad as you think.

The injection is over quite quickly, and honestly feels like a hot pinch. the leep didnt hurt to much, didnt feel anything for most of it, then on one part it felt like a sharp pain but its over quite quickly. Its not a bad pain that u have to stop the doctor.

My after effects were cramps for 4 days, painkillers took them off, then brown spots, and now black spots which come out like soot or gound coffee and they smell BAD. i was worried but after reading about other ladies with the same issues i feel a bit better. Hopefully this helps anyone who is going to have it done. Im glad I had it done as i had pre-cancerous cells and im only 24 (just), i have been told i might have to go back in for more leep if they didnt get all the cells, and honestly im glad i had it done and i would go back in again to make sure the cells are ok.

Good luck to anyone going through it - its not as bad as u think it will be :-)

leep procedure is a good option. it can save your life! i just had it this week and things are great. of course i am having the very common side effects of discharge with a bit of an odor but if that is all you have to complain about over cervical cancer then get over it!

I just had my LEEP done today. I have waited a little over a month to have this procedure. When I first found out I had to have this done, I was an emotional wreck. Then I was ok and knew that I was helping myself get rid of the CIN II and CIN III.

Today I was in the office and then started to cry because I was nervous. My GYN was great and just let me take my time to prepare. A medical student was observing and she was wonderful as well.

The procedure was easy for me. I really didn't feel any pain. I was worried about the injection they gave me to numb the area, but I don't even think I felt it. My GYN had said that I could take 3 motrin about an hour before the procedure, so perhaps that helped me as well. I think the most uncomfortable part of the procedure was the speculum, honest! When it was over I thought to myself, well, hopefully the abnormal cells are all out and that I won't have to worry anymore.

My GYN said that the numbing medication can make your heart beat faster or your legs shake, but this didn't happen to me. I did feel a little funny right after the procedure, but was able to leave the office shortly after. They had told me to bring someone with me so they could drive me home. Some women react differently to the medication and can feel dizzy or lightheaded.

But, so far so good. No cramping yet and I've managed to do some light laundry.

Here are some follow-up instructions I was given and thought I'd share:
*The day of the procedure take time to rest!
*No lifting more than 20lbs for at least one week
*No tampons or anything in the vagina for at least four weeks
*No intercourse for at least four weeks
*No baths for at least two weeks
*No lakes or pools for at least four weeks
*Schedule a repeat PAP four to six months after the procedure

Good luck to you all and hoping for good results!
*No exercise or intense physical activity for at least four weeks

Wow, thanks so much for the guide to recovering from a LEEP. What made you feel compelled to post that? Do you have any other tips as well?

i had the leep procedure done this morning.
i am in a lot of pain. if your going to get it done either take something for the pain 30 mins before hand, the surgery, or demand a local anesthetic. i had neither. all i had was the cervical block ie: a medication that numbs the cervix. i pretty much felt everything, and i broke down during the surgery. i t has been 3 hours after the surgery, i am dizzy, cramps from hell, in so much pain.. more than i have ever been. also feeling a lot of pressure in the bum region.
i am very concerned b/c i want to heal perfectly and be able to have children, i am only 23yrs old. and i have been trying to a baby.. for the last 5 mnths.. and nothing yet. i want to be able to have children and if i cant i will be very upset.

I had a LEEP done on July 27th. The procedure itself was no big deal for me. I took a Xanax and a half (prescribed by my doc). I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone who is having anxiety about it. It helped me greatly. Of course, my boyfriend had to drive me to and from but that was also comforting. I went to work the next day and I DO NOT recommend that. The whole first week I had on and off days...meaning some days I felt fine and others I felt just terrible. My doc said no sex for a month, etc.

My 10-day healing check was fine. My doc said the pain I'd had intermittenly the first week was probably due to my cervix being swollen from the procedure (which is normal). Even lifting ordinary groceries, changing sheets, kitty litter, whatever kind of hurt, I will say. We are too hard on ourselves sometimes so I do think some rest (even if you don't think you "need" it) is really advisable. Take at least the next day off work, lie on the couch, have Advil and watch chick flicks. I wish I had. I think it would have helped.

After the first two weeks or so I really felt pretty fine. I'm a runner so I ran a 5K race on August 15th and felt great. My boyfriend and I finally had sex again after our required month-long waiting period. And, well, there was some spotting. In fact, every time we had sex I bled. And it just got worse. Finally, on September 23rd I went to my doc and she said I had some granulation tissue (which is essentially scar tissue) and did a silver nitrate treatment on me. That hurt a little but no big deal. She seemed confident that I'd be fine after that. She even said I could have sex on Sunday (this was on a Wed). But I said that my boyfriend was really feeling awful about seeing blood every time he made love to me as he felt (of course) that he was hurting me or doing damage. She said no, he wasn't hurting me, it was just irritated and still healing but that sure, if we could wait a bit, we should.

We waited...oh 12 days...and I am still bleeding when we have sex. I don't have any pain at all but the bleeding is bright red and very disturbing. In fact, I burst into tears right afterwards and said "I feel broken." Because I do.

My boyfriend is a wonderful, loving person but we are also a very sexual couple. We have sex at least once a day. The last two and half months have been harder for me, I think, than for him. He's been patient and kind. But I feel worried.

I have another appointment on October 23rd coming up. My doc may decide to cauterize my cervix this time since the chemical (silver nitrate) didn't work before. I am not happy.

I am a very health-conscious person and I actually thought about not having this procedure in the first place. My first diagnosis (of mild dysplasia) was in 2000. I had a colposcopy and it came back normal. And for 8 years after....lucky me....all my Paps were normal. It wasn't until 2008 when I lost my freaking job and went through a period of horrible stress (almost losing my house etc) that I had an abnormal Pap again. Right now I wonder if perhaps I started doing more yoga and meditation and vitamins and relaxation if I couldn't have healed myself....

I am questioning (for me) whether I could have beat it again. I just want to heal and I quite frustrated with how this is affecting my intimate life. Blood after sex (every time) is a sad thing. I just hope it gets fixed.

I feel for each and everyone of you who has had difficulties with this procedure. It is not as simple and easy as I had hoped it would be.

But...clearly...for many it is. And yes, I do think if you already have children this is a no-brainer. But for me, at the age of 37 and wanting children....I am afraid. I wish I'd had kids first and then had this done. I hope I can have a baby. Hell, I just want to have sex!

Best of luck and health..to all.

I have a Leep Procedure coming up in 2 weeks. My doctor warned me I would read all sorts of bad things about it, but not to listen cause it was all "theoritcal." This isn't the only blog I've read stating how bad it is, and I'm nervous. The main thing I have found in common with all the blogs is that all of you have had children and aren't worried about not having anymore. Well I am only 21 and have none. I want to get rid of the abnormal cells but not at the cost of being barren.

I am sure that if you are concerned about it then you should get a second opinion and talk to a gyno or someone who has done so many of these procedures, preferably the surgery you're going with. Have you spoken to one about this?

I had a Leep in 2005 and was able to carry a full term over due baby in 2006. I had another Leep in 2008 and I am 13weeks with my 3rd child. I am a bit worried this time because I am like how much of my cervix are they gonna take. I have to go see the high risk doctor to see if my pregnacy will be considered High Risk. I hope everything goes will but I do recommend that if your doctors says get it the get it.!!!

Hi. I just had LEEP done a week ago. I had it done, not because I had abnormal PAPs but because I have had bleeding during intercourse for no reason, with no pain. THey did the procedure where they freeze the cervix but that did nothing - so they decided on LEEP. They numbed me for the procedure, so it was really painless and I felt fine after! I had a teeny bit of cramping the next day, but that was it. I am now experiencing black discharge with yucky smells, but honestly - i'd rather deal with this for 3 weeks then the chance of cancer. I am only 21 and have no kids, and although my biggest fear is not being able to bear children, if I get cancer, I won't be able to have them anyways so basically you have nothing to lose - and its not painful at all! The freezing procedure I had was VERY painful, and this was like nothing. It's just gross for a few weeks, and no sex. But it's worth it.

I had the LEEP procedure done November 30th. There was some discharge shortly thereafter, but I began to bleed December 6th. It hasn't stopped bleeding since. Sometimes it is bright red, other times it looks more like blood clots. I have visited my Dr. twice since my procedure. The first time was for my 2week post-op checkup on December 14, and he used the silver nitrate and said I should be good to go in a few days. Well, I had to see him again on December 18th because I was still bleeding, and he said he saw nothing. I said I was still bleeding and when should I expect it to stop, and he told me Xmas.

Here it is Xmas day, and I was spotting still throughout the night. Some of the blood could be from menstruation, but it should be finished by now! I think I need a second opinion, because as another poster wrote, this is really having an effect on my social life, and I don't wish to bleed forever!

i had the leep program done on dec 17th/09 i was diagnosed with asc-h c1n2, i found with the leep program it didn't really hurt during the procedure but i did feel a burning sensation as he was cutting the skin, and the smell of burnt skin was overwhelming, after the procedure was done i did have cramping, and i bleed for roughly 2 weeks and if i have intercourse i still bleed, as a reply to the one person's comment about starting her period early and having a light flow, if you had just had the leep procedure done i do not think that was your period, i think that was one of the side effects of the procedure because it is exactly what i went through only i bleed for about 2 weeks and currently still bleed if i have intercourse, normally i have a 28 day cycle for my period, but since having my colposcopy/biopsy, and then the leep program which pretty much occured within weeks of each other my period has not been normal, after the colposcopy/biopsy my period was around 12 days late, and then i had the leep program done and my period had ended about 3 days before i had the leep done, and still have yet to have my cycle, and from what i would think is that the bleeding due to the surgury would not be your monthly cycle because your bleeding because you had pieces of skin removed which caused the bleeding but the monthly cycle is something totally different and you should still have that, so this has confused me, and when i read the comment from the women who had the scar tissue and it closed her cervix so that she did not have normal cycles well this worries because my doctor did not mention this as a possibilty, and this also concerns me, i am 26 years old and my cervix feels like someone butchered it, the amount of skin they had to remove made my cervix not even feel or look like a cervix instead of it being round and full it is almost now flat across and feels like there are v indents in my cervix from where they removed the skin.
right now though i am mostly curious about the side effects to women's menstrual cycle and if anyone did have normal cycle's after having the leep done, or if a higher precentage of women did experience a delay in there cycle, thanks in advance for your answers and also thank you to the women that have talked about what they have gone through with there leep program it does help when your looking for answers that no one else seems to be able to answer.

I had a LEEP procedure done today and i cried the whole time. It was very invasive and brought back a lot of bad memoried from being raped....With that being said. I would talk to your DR if you have any PTSD so that they can help you through the process. I would still take these feelings over CANCER.

I just had the LEEP done 5 days ago, the procedure wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be. The beginning is like a pap, they have you lay down and swab and then put the vinegar like liquid inside the area so they are able to see the abnormal cells, and that was the only unfomfortable part, but i feel that way during all paps, but for me, the freezing and lazering i didnt even feel ! I get some cramping right now, but I am also due to get my period tomorrow so maybe that also has something to do with it, and I am getting that disgusting discharge, and I thought it was just me but after reading everyone elses comments I know its now normal, thats the part i dont like and the fact that i cant have sex or use tampons for 3 weeks, but with this discharge i wouldnt want to have sex anyways haha. I wasnt told about any side effects of not being able to have children as im only 23 and dont have any. only time will tell

I just had a LEEP done on January 27, 10. At first I was scared and the thought of a needle going into your cervix would hurt but it didnt it was just a little pinch just like when they took a piece of the cervix for testing. Other than that it was just discomfort. Afterwards there was just a little cramping and a little spotting. Now there is alot of smelly discharge with comes down through out the day and found little black specks on my pad and after I pee. I dont know if it is normal or not but what I have read it is. I just hope by next week (week 2) all the discharge will go away because smelling bad down there isnt the most attractive. Next week I go to the doctor for the results for the tissue they took of during the LEEP and another pap to see if they got all of it. So I will be monitored every 3 months after and hopefully it wont come back because than I would have to go through the procedure over and over again. Which I do not. I will keep you posted to tell how everything works out. Good luck with everyone else who has had this done.
