I am very scared. I am single, no baby yet.
I had my first child when I was 18. A year later a nurse called me and said that I had an abnormal pap test and they wanted to do a colposcopy and they took a biopsy also. The colposcopy hurt so bad - the cramping was imediate and took an entire day to go away! A nurse called after the results of the colpo came back and she told me that I have cervical cancer and I needed to schedule a leep procedure. I was so shocked and couldnt believe they tell you that over the phone. Two months later I moved to Japan. When I got there they told me I was pregnant and that they could check me out after the birth. After the birth they said my cervix looked fine and that I was to young to have to worry about any of it. I lived there for 3 years with a normal pap! I got back to the states and the first visit they wanted to do a colpo again. I stopped visiting the doctor for about 4 years because I was sick of hearing about it so i just ignored it. Now that I just moved to NY I figured I would take this time to get a second opinion from a non military doctor. The first pap said abnormal and they wanted to do a colpo so I did and they took a biopsy and the results came back severe displasia with pre cancerous cells. The doctor told me that after you give birth you loose layers upon layers of cervix cells, so the doctors were probably right the first time around but after I had my 2nd daughter my body shed the cells and healed. But as all bad things come back again.....it came back. He recommended the leep procedure. I researched it online and even watched a video! I wasnt worried about a small chance of not having children or hard labor because my husband had a vascetomy done while in Japan and we decided two kids were plenty for us! I was so nervous to have this done and watching the videos and other people stories just scarrrrred me! It wasnt like a colposcopy at all -- the only this that gave a little discomfort was the epinephren because it raises your heart beat a little like you ran a marathon but the nurse monitors you! Going to the dentist getting a needle jammed in your mouth hurt more. 10 MINS AND I WAS OUT OF THERE! Their sending the skin cells they removed to be further tested but its only a 3-5 % chance of returning! Im 27 been married for 10 years and the proud mother of 2 and have no more cancer cells in my cervix!
I probably spelled a couple things wrong!
I too have read different forums about the leep and was out of my mind in a panic about what different girls were saying. Luckily my doctor and I both agreed that being put to sleep was going to be easier for me as I had a HORRIBLE colposcopy and I dont do very well with the yearly pap smear either. So here is my experience:
I had my surgery done June 12 for moderate dyplasia. When I first work up I felt as if my vagina was on fire. They kept giving me pain meds once those wore off again I felt as if my vagina was on fire. After they got me back to my short stay room I had to do a few things before I could leave the hospital. One of them was to pee. That was probably worst than a UTI. The nurse told me that it will burn for a couple times when I urinate and not to worry. Unfortunately, it hurt every time I peed for like 3 days. I took 5 days off. I work as a manager in a restaurant and am on my feet constantly. So I felt it was better to rest for the 5 days. My husband took care of me the day of the surgery. The cramps while strong and knife like were there, the pain meds were a huge help. The day after the surgery I had dinner with my best friend and her son, than we went to a small park so he could practice using his new fishing pole. I didnt want more than a quarter of a block, and by time I got home I was having horrible cramps. Sitting on a hard chair or something without alot of cushion hurt my vagina horrible. I felt as if I was sitting on a ball directly underneath me. Today, almost 2 weeks later, I have had more discharge than normal (which my doctor said to expect) Bleeding only when I am overdoing it. And the cramps again only come if I am overdoing it. I have yet to have sex as the doctor said to wait at least 4 weeks. I think because I took it soooo easy the first 5 days that my scab hasnt fallen off yet. I have seen little flecks (like coffee grounds) but just a couple not alot like some girls have had. I went back to work on fathers day. That day was probably the worst yet as that would have been more than I have done in 5 days
From my reading the ladies that have done the LEEP under sedation seem to have better experience than those who do it under local. I am so glad I did it under sedation otherwise I have a feeling that I would have had a different experience.
I am glad I could read what to expect. And for anyone reading: Remember each person is different and you know your body than most. Dont be afraid to stand up to the doctor and ask for different options to the procedure. If your insurance covers it have it under sedation and REST!! Take a couple days off and do nothing, and slowly get back into the groove of things. Trust me your healing body will thank you
