This is all very interesting that no ENT or Allergist can diagnose this, and there are so many people with the same issue. I am another sufferer of this lump in throat feeling.
After years, I know now that my issue is Allergy related. It happens to me every year for about 2-3 weeks, in April, August, and October. Nothing seems to work for me yet, but I'm still looking for a remedy.

I am scared to go to my doctor because she is a TERRIBLe DOCTOR, but i don't want to have throat cancer or something horrible like that. I smoke, but it doesn't seem to effect it. I don't wonder if it is my wisdom teeth causing infection in my lower sinus's.
I've been experiencing this for more than a year, the last month inparticular it has been a very highlighted part of my living and its driving me up the wall!
It started as a feeling that there is a lump in my throat, I put it down to stress because at the time I was exactly that. I've always suffered with tonsillitus since I was a teen and my tonsils are large even without the infection. Now I feel like its constanly on my mind, I can breathe fine and drinking and eating doesn't seem to be a problem. Occassionally I have a sore throat when the lump is more prominent and also an earache. I've been tested for thyroid but all clear.
I do have allergies which I am currently being tested for but surely that can't be the problem?!
Someone please help I literally just want it gone!
I have been reading everyones commentaries and find myslf having a similar sensation. Over the last 4 years, I have had this about 5 times.
Looking in the mirror I can see that my tonsils are enlarged and literally sit on my tongue at the back of my mouth which I believe causes slightly labored breathing and can cause some panic or stress as a result...
What normally happens upon taking some benadryl, it will go away faster then not having taken it.... say up to an hour vs several hours.
I believe in each instance this has occurred, was while I had been napping and or sleeping and also at times of stress. I found one of the passages interesting about a rare face twitch in conjunction with getting this sensation. I am up now writing this while having yet again another bout of this. My eye had been twitching before going to bed (very rare for me, most likely due to stress), and I was awakened with enlarged tonsils.
I believe that its a result of either stress or an allergic reaction to something which i have yet to identify. I dont have allergies, but If it were an allergy, I believe a seasoning/herb or a chemical additive can be a cause as well....
End of day, be calm because if it is stress related, then clearly panicking wont help the situation.
I find breathing through my nose and remaining calm helsp quite a bit until it subsides...
My next step will be to consider having my tonsils out. May as well remove the source of the problem, especially when breathing is involved...
It strikes me that there is no clear understanding of why this happens, but what I do know is anything that inteferes with breathing should be addressed right away...
The last thing anyone wants is a situation that gets more complicated once an onset begins...
I have the same thing since Aug of this year and it's now Nov. I'm having a problem breathing also is anyone else? I had tons of tonsillitis as a kid and been to 4 ENT Doctors but the one yesterday told me I need to get my tonsils out he's the first one out of four doctors that said that. I'm kind of afraid because I'm old and I heard it's hard on an old person. What do you guys thing any comment?
most of these sound like tonsil stones. im having as tonsil stone issue right now and the dr i went too had no idea what i was talking about and thought it was strep throat
I have the same thing. been to several doctors and they act like im crazy. It hurts daily. my throat is sore I feel pulsating and it wont go away. They prescribed acid reflex medicine. I know this is not the problem. Ive had a scope down my throat. cat scan and throat scan.. all show nothing... Help !!!!!!!!!!
I have been sick for a few days with what I think was just a cold, and am pretty much all better now except for this damn tortuous CONSTANT urge to swallow and clear my throat due to this "lump in the back of my throat" sensation, which only started up a few hrs ago and is keeping me awake. . .I can't sleep at all like this. Additionally the constant clearing of my throat is making my throat sore and scratchy feeling so I'm trying to resist. I woke my girlfriend up (a nurse) and had her check my tonsils and she said they were swollen. I think I've had this same sensation once or twice a few years ago. I was just reading that swollen tonsils can be caused by the common cold and other bacterial or viral infections so I think that's what's going on in my case as I've been sick.
So far I've gargled with mouthwash and warm saltwater, and I took 2 benadryl with the hope that it may calm or suppress some of the swelling reaction or at least help me to sleep. Right now I'm sipping on some warm tea to try to calm my tonsils.
This sucks so much. At least now I know that I'm not alone in my suffering, but it's hardly comforting :(.
so let me get this right. you all have had the same thing yet nothing has been found or diagnosed? is there nothing that can be done? i have had this for a week, not as bad as you i know, but i have not had tubes or anything like that. i smoke and have asthma but i have had them for years and the problem came out of the blue one night. also by what i have been readin it could be viral which should only take a month tops to clear.
I've had the same issue for about 8 months to a year now (I can't really remember it has been so long). If I get sick, it gets worse. If I do a night of heavy drinking, it gets worse. After reading everyone's comments here, I have one general question. I feel this is all related to a root canal I had some time back (maybe 14 or 16 months). The incisions never felt like they fully healed and I easily get small infections behind my back tooth. When the gums around the tooth get swollen, the lump does too. Did anyone else who is having this problem (I am positive we are all suffering from the same thing) have a root canal or major dental work done before it started?
