I'm here because I must say about my tinnitus and cannabis use. I suspected my weed smoking had something to do with it, and after a little scientific process I must say, for the benefit of any community- I have reason to believe marijuana can be tied to tinnitus. I have a constant ring in the frequency of persay what an old television makes, from raves or music I suppose. But the other day I broke my abstinence to smoke with a friend because life, homies, ect. Northern Lights, very high THC. 30 minutes later I got a pitch shifting tinnitus burst in one ear that sounded like a television swear word censor BEEP that fell in pitch, as in literally sliding down the chromatic scale. It was annoyingly loud. Further confirming my suspicions. In my abstinence the sudden onsets did go away. It may be that very high THC weed be it potency, man made strain, nutrient used, or some other factor may be in play. Only super high grade stuff I get these days does it. I started smoking in 2006 at a nice pace... but not until 6 months ago have I had this tinnitus sh*t from smoking weed. So there you go, high potency chemical compound tipping an imbalance. Maybe. Yes it's fun, don't let it go to your head especially with this recent legalization wave... I have a feeling people may be unknowingly altering it in some fail commercial or whatever ways.

There is also theory that tinnitus (and for that matter ear aches and sinusitis) can be caused by one or more triggerpoints in the muscles of your jaw, face, head and/or neck. These triggerpoints are little contracted areas of muscle fibres, and are often there because of stress. Triggerpoints make you feel pain at the location of the contracted muscle area, but often the pain is felt in entirely different area's. For example: whenever I have painful upper front teeth, I massage a triggerpoint in my temporalis and as if by magic the pain completely subsides. I told my dentist, she confirmed it. She will not tell her patients though because treating people with unexplainable sensitive teeth is part of her income... Look on the internet for more explanation and treatments, no hocus-pocus, it is a widely acknowledged fact. It could be that the (increased) stress and anxiety that can arise when using strong weed or withdrawing from weed are responsible for causing those triggerpoints. Therefore it can also cause a stiff neck and all sorts of other pain in your body. I never experienced real tinnitus, although often I had a beep in my ears that slowly subsided after about half a minute or so when lying in bed. Lots of people have this, but the funny thing is that it happens a lot less frequently since I stopped using cannabis. My aunt who has a 40+ years record of smoking weed suffers from severe tinnitus. She always thought that it had to do with all the loud parties that she attended over the years, but is now contemplating to see a triggerpoint therapist to see if it helps. Keep you updated but could take a while, she always takes her time with things like this :)

i don't know what you people are saying! my ears were ringing the 1st time i smoked a weed joint! it's just an effect of being STONED! probably you have sinus and you 'smoke' too much! it's not the weed brother! i've been smoking for 4 years straight and been off it for sometime always without a problem! no withdraw'll symptoms! just the occasional "a joint would be nice"! but then you really wanna enjoy your smoke after you have smoked so much. so look forward to occasions when it's a nice comfortable environment to trip and smoke it up! you won't be smoking too much too and u'll be blown away with every drag! peace brother! marijuana helps cure asthma and everytime my head pains i smoke a toke and it's all fine! :D and i guess indian weed is different from wherever you are! :P it's shiva's prasad! if you smoke too much u'll get screwed! just like if you eat too much you'll get screwed!

woodsy,

how are you doing with this now? Did your ringing ever get any better?

I've had ringing on and off for years and I've blamed it on a lot of things, but I never thought to blame the pot (which I've recently given up after a period of really abusive use).

This response is incredibly, incredibly inaccurate and poorly researched, odds are the tinnitus is solely from your acne meds as stronger ones (especially Accutane and its generics) and if it hasn't gone away for a while I'd see your doctor. Also, if you were high for 4 days you smoked laced weed- the highest tch or even thc-v (very rare) strains wouldn't keep you high for more than a day, and that's if you go through a lot.

I also smoked straight weed for many years until I got symptoms of tinnitus, then I noticed every time I had a cone my tinnitus would get worse, so I decided I had my fair share of weed in my life and stopped cold turkey. Well I thought I could just stop and all would be fine, but no I went through many symptoms of withdrawal and now it's 4 years no weed. Well I still got the tinnitus, which by the way could not be detected by ear specialists after many tests. I say the weed damaged my nerves permanently or blood vessels around my neck. I am done with weed forever, and really wish I never smoked it. I and many like me know how insidious this plant is and just feel sorry for those that are youthful and smoke it thinking they are cool. After all the likes of John Wayne thought they were cool for smoking tobacco..= fail fail fail.

The info in this thread has been very interesting, it's good to know there are others in the same 'ringing' boat as me.

I too have been smoking everyday for many years, low-level tinnitus mainly but got a LOT worse when I switched to high-level THC strands, culminating in sudden bursts of high-pitch 'squeeling' when I hit the pillow at night. Highly unpleasant.

So I have kicked all weed for a month now, the squeeling has gone but still have low-level tinnitus, unpleasant but maneagable.

I hope it will go away with time, but accept I've made my bed and now have to lie in it.

Certainly periods of anxiety make it worse, so I'm trying to combat that with meditation & developing a more positive mental attitude.  It's going to take time.

Hang in there everyone, my thoughts are with you all.
