everyone has different reactions to many drugs, prescription and recreational, and there is no one correct statement summing up pot's effects.
YES it can be addicting, mentally and/or physically... If 'you' didn't have a problem abstaining, consider yourself lucky. others aren't so unaffected by it.
One quick fact, cannabinoids bind to CB1 and CB2 neurotransmitter receptors producing various effects, different cannabinoids (or cannabidiols) have different affinities for different receptors, leading scientists do not know all the details! FINAL... BUT, we do know that natural cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) are produced in response to a high physical workload, and is linked with the calming response and vegetative state that happens after long periods of work, or after a fight or flight response. Our body generally does things it has to, so cannabinoids may perhaps benefit post workout recovery in some way... but for the most part, we've evolved as a tough animal already, and perhaps too much cannabinoids may produce undesired effects... if bigger amounts would help us get bigger, faster, stronger, Darwin would agree that we would have already evolved greater levels of endogenous cannabinoids... but who knows.
Consider this, testosterone will help build muscles, but there are HUGELY undesired side effects to overloading on this hormone... we can't procreate, so it hasn't evolved as a natural mechanism. The same may be hypothesized w.r.t. cannabinoids, perhpas on a different scale.
It has been shown to decrease serum testosteron in rats, don't know about humans.. dont' care to check, its not likely going to do you any good, and can 'potentially' cause other hormone balance problems over time, like the adrenaline/insulin/glucagon levels that manage your blood sugar concentrations.
As for the getting better muscle strenght/gains/one rep max... perhaps i can suggest an explanation for the preception of this, or perhaps real benefits.
So... I myself have noticed too that it 'feels' easier to lift heavier weights when high... don't knwo about more reps, i seem to get lazy, but i'll specifically talk about one rep max.
I might call into question the term 'maximal voluntary contraction' which is understood in my field of research (doing my masters in the neural control of movement, and computational neural dynamics) varies according to general brain activity.
So, i might guess (dont' jump on me.. its only a guess) that some mechanism of cannabinoids affecting the neural dynamics and synchronous activities may perhaps actually allow you to focus on producing a greater maximal voluntary contraction. people that have been smoking for a while, and perhaps learned how to take advantage of the different states of mind that pot puts you in, maybe, just maybe it can help the focusing of attention to producing one strong force. Its a guess.
Its well known that there are plenty of CB1 receptors in cerebellar cells, and the cerebellum is largely implicated in coordination, timing, and dynamics of motor control. Its a guess, but it would be interested to see a real study. also consider the different cannabinoids present in weed vary from plant to plant (indica plants will give you a 'stuck to the couch syndrome' whereas sativas generally provoke more energetic states)
Personally, i can memorize the $hit out of a list of terms when i'm high... but then again, someone without tolerance may just zone out and be as useless as a hat full of busted a$$holes.
There's lots of great reading out there.. if you doubt what people write, go do a google search with 'site:.edu' included, or checkout www.pubmed.com for some serious studies.

Lowering testosterone: The study to which you are referring did not even use real THC. It used a synthetic analogue which mimics the effects of marijuana. Furthermore, the doses adminstered were the equivalent of smoking around 25 joints at once. Even with that obscene dosage, the degree of lowered testerone was so slight that it could be attributed to the natural hormonal swings in mens' bodies, not necessarily the fake weed these people were given. Marijuana does not lower testosterone levels.
Lowering Sperm Count: More reffer madness propaganda. This wasn't even proven through experimental research using real THC in humans; they tested rats. Once again, they gave them obscene dosages which in turn exaggerated the results of the test. It is nearly impossible to smoke enough pot to hinder sperm production.
Your list of "BAD EFFECTS" sounds like the same nonsense they spout off in D.A.R.E. Look out for "dangerous" side effects like cottonmouth, red eyes and the munchies!
Paranoia is an effect of the laws and social stigmas surrounding marijuana use. Police ARE actually trying to catch you and people (like you) DO judge those that smoke weed.
Furthermore, as anyone will tell you who's ever tried it, having sex while stoned is far more pleasurable than while sober.
An increased heart rate is not necessarily a bad thing unless you already have cardiac problems, and as far as your cancer claim, there has been no study (ever) that has proven smoking marijuana causes cancer. On the contrary, there have been numerous studies clearly demonstrating marijuana's (specifically THC's) ability to combat forms of brain and lung cancer. Additionally, no one in the history of mankind has ever been rendered infertile from smoking marijuana. That is just a bald-faced lie.
Also, I don't know if you bothered to do the research before you came on this site and posted that load of c**p, but no one in the recorded history of mankind has ever died from smoking marijuana. EVER. PERIOD. As a matter of fact, a greater percentage of people die from consuming legal drugs (alcohol, caffine, tobacco) than the percentage of those consuming illegal drugs (marijuana, cocaine, heroin, meth, exstacy, mushrooms and LSD).
As for the effects of marijuana on weightlifting, you won't find much experimental evidence saying "yay or nay" but I can tell you from my own experience what I've found.
If you smoke before you lift, you will be able to lift more, but your muscles will tire more quickly. Also, you just will not perform as well in any cardiovascular exercises (marijuana smoke is less harmful, but it's still smoke). If you smoke afterwards, it helps you relax and eases the muscle tension that typically develops after a good workout. It also stimulates your appetite (through the munchies).
One more thing, whoever posted that marijuana releases endorphins in your body needs to do their research. Marijuana has almost nothing to do with the release of endorphins. The THC in marijuana mirrors a hormone your body releases called anadamine. When you flood your body with THC by smoking weed, your body essentially feels as if it's experiencing a massive release of anadamine. This hormone is associated with feelings of pleasure and thus (in combination with seratonin, melatonin, and your body's endogenous canabinoid system) regulates your mood.
The drug that most closely mimics endorphins is HEROIN. That is a completely different ballpark than marijuana.

Weed doesnt help you build muscle. It alters your feelings, not your muscle chemistry

I really don’t know if it really can help you build some muscle, but stay away from the stuff!!! Even if it does, it ain’t worth it!! Studies have shown that marijuana lowers testosterone levels in men and lower sperm counts possibly resulting in difficulty in having children. It is a drug, you can become addicted, and it has ONLY BAD EFFECTS!!
Short term effects are: sleepiness and increased hunger; difficulty keeping track of time; reduced short-term memory; reduced ability to perform tasks requiring concentration and coordination (e.g. driving a car); increased heart rate; potential cardiac dangers for those with preexisting heart disease; bloodshot eyes; dry mouth and throat; paranoia; hallucinations
Long term effects are: enhanced cancer risk; decrease in testosterone levels in men
increase in testosterone levels in women; diminished or extinguished sexual pleasure; increased risk of infertility in both men and women; addiction; death;

here is why its illegal:
In 1972, President Richard Nixon commissioned the National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse to produce an in-depth report on marijuana. The report, entitled "Marihuana: A Signal of Misunderstanding," found marijuana prohibition unconstitutional and stated regardless whether or not the courts would overturn prohibition of marijuana possession, the executive and legislative branches have a duty to obey the Constitution

answer to the main question:
Now I'm not condoning its recreatiional use, if you abuse it, like any thing in life you have a problem... as far as I know though, if your trying to build muscle, Marijuana isn't going to give you that motivation, and you'll probably defeat the purpose if your craving easily accessible snacks..... if it's every now and then don't stress on it..... but if you drink alchohol or use it to a addictive point, your probably not going to have as much motivation...

Remember
* Smoking pot daily is not good for weightgain
* Being Sober (quitting smoking) actually helps your tastebuds
I understand munchies and all but personally I went from 155-195lbs
In about a year and found the month i quit smoking Pot I noticed a appetite that was great for a muscle gaining workout routine.

it may just be because my tollerance up way high but whenever i smoke and then workout, i can focus a lot more on the task at hand, making my lifts seem easier and more concentrated and controlled. sadly i cant speak much on the chemical effects on your muscles, i can say that easier lifts means more reps/weight which will break down your muscles more and will in turn build them just a little more. this might not be much build but i know i feel a better workout after i smoke then when i dont.
one more note, weed is only addictive and contributes to bad work ethic to the weak minded. if you know your limit and have the determination, it wont make you lazy to the point you cant move from the couch because you're too stoned. as for me, i'd smoke a fatty, get a good buzz, then work my ass off for a few hours. also before i started smoking weed, i was at a waist size of 36 to a 38, now i wear a 32, might even be able to try a 30.

i've been clean for 4 months now but im not gonna stay clean, i love to smoke weed. i just tend to quit once in a while when it becomes too boring. if it gets to the point where my tolerance is too high, i give it up. the first hit after a period of nonsmoking is like the first time all over again. as for addiction, i have the same mentality as the above poster, it's only for the weak minded. if you want to quit, it's quite simple to.

and for the guy who said stay away from it and trying to scare you with "sexual side effects" is full of sh*!
I have much better sex when I am high and it actually IMPROVES my erections and stamina.....and enjoyment
I have talked to a doctor about it and he agreed that it is not nearly as harmful as alcohol. There are these things called vaporizers that just heat the weed up without actually burning it, releasing the THC in a much healthier way than smoking it...so for all of those "increased cancer risk" nay-sayers, how will you respond to that?
Marijuana should be decriminalized, legalized, packaged, sold, and taxed.
US gov't why would you choose to waste money over making money?
oh yeah...
everybody smokes it, so just legalize it already...Bill Clinton, George Bush, every single presidential candidate for 2008 except maybe the uptight Dodd.....
