I had the Mirena coil 18 months after having my son, as I became pregnant on a normal coil.  Well, I had it fitted and everything was fine for the first 5 years, I'd bleed for around 4 days maximum during my cycle, and tender breasts were my only symptoms XD.  Then when it came round for my Mirena to be removed, my doctor couldn't find it eh, after several attempts, a referral was made for me to have it surgically removed by the hospital.

After coming round from day surgery, they sent me home with a couple of anti biotics just in case I'd caught an infection during the removal process.  I had no leakage overnight, woke up to a dry pad and thought all was well.  The next day was a whole different story, everytime I stood up, it was like the flood gates had opened, no amount of pads could prevent me soiling my clothes.  I was changing nearly every 30 minutes, until I ended up in A&E the next day, after contacting NHS direct, who told me to go back to the hospital.  I was examined by gynae, and prescribed Mefenamic tablets as pain relief, and to reduce the bleeding.  This had been ongoing for the six months, my periods lasted for 3 weeks, as I have a cyst on my ovary, and the hospital wanted to monitor whether this had been caused by the Mirena. I'd layer up myself up so much I'm surprised I didn't catch thrush, I'd wear 3 night time pads in my underwear in a long line, another 2 pads followed by another pair of knickers, then those restrictive body control pants, also lined with a pad, as well as a pair of leggings, yes you've guessed it, lined with another couple of pads, topped off with my daywear.  Although this may come across as cutting off my circulation, I was passing golf ball clots, and a red river everytime I stood or tried to move, I recall one day stopping off at the bank prior to collecting my son from school, and feeling a whoosh, as it was a warm day I wasn't wearing a jacket, thankfully, I had a scarf round my neck, I wrapped it around my waist and thought I'd pop home prior to going straight to the school to collect him.  Thank goodness I did, despite having all that protective padding on, my trousers had been coloured red from the posterior down to the back of my knee caps, can you imagine the embarressment I would've suffered, if I'd gone straight to collect my child from school |-O?

After the hospital confirmed that there was no growth in my cyst, it was agreed to insert a new Mirena, well, that helped for the first 3 months, then I started to experience severe discomfort in my lower back, migraines, constantly feeling low, mood swings, quick to anger, lack of energy, I was constantly drained and the heavy bleeding and golf ball clots were back, I was so pleased to be mobile again, I would persevere when I'd soil my clothes at work, 'til a few days ago I was made housebound again.

At the weekend, I felt like something was lodged in the left side of my vagina, although I could feel the string when I washed which was unusual, I thought I'd book an appointment next week and bring it up with the doctor.  I saw my doctor on Monday and explained that my periods were too heavy, and that I was housebound again, she asked if she could examine me and I said I'd prefer if this was performed once my flow had eased up (ha, like this was likely).

She reluctantly prescribed me 15mg Norethisterone for the next 30 days to reduce the flow, as she wanted assurance that I wasn't pregnant.  I had to explain that I bleed so much, I'm sure my fiance thinks I'm lying and having an affair as we haven't been sexually active for months.  He's said he's never known a period to last 3 months.  After returning home from the doctors, to my horror my Mirena fell out, I phoned the doctor in a panic, as I didn't know what to do, I've been given a follow up appointment next week, and been told to commence the medication.  In the interim, it's day two since Mirena and I have gone our seperate ways, I'm still bleeding, inclusive of golf ball clots, I'm wondering when the medication is going to kick in.  Hopefully I'll have some good news for you next week :-|

I just had the Mirena removed after 11 months. I had normal periods with the exception of bad clots and cramps. I had it removed this past Monday. I had no problems until yesterday. I have been bleeding heavy and large clots. The only other time I have had this much bleeding was after the birth of my daughter and that was caused from a retained placenta. I ended up with a blood transfusion because I had lost half of my blood volume. I am really worried. I would never recommend the Mirena to anybody else.

Glad to read lots of other people are having the same problems as myself. I had the mirena for 9 months. I was in the doctor every month for cramping, back pain, bleeding on and off all the time. At first they would say it take 6 months to settle. Well finally at 6 months I seen a Women doctor who specializes in contraceptions and women's studies. She had lots of tests done and it was in the wrong place! She gave me 2 options 1 try and move it & 2 take it out. Well due to the price I paid I wanted to try to move it. Once she moved it I felt great.... Thought the problem was solved. Exactly a month later once again it started so I instantly knew that it fell again. I called the DR. and said to get it out!!! I had it removed and she said its was 3/4 of the way out by itself like my body was rejecting it and pushing it out. This may work for some lucky people what it is the worst thing I have ever used in my life. I have had my mirena out 10 days now with lots of cramping, bleeding, and clotting. Hope it all goes away soon!

I have found this topic so interesting and can identify with most that is being said, oh, only the negative stuff though!

I had my Mirena coil taken out on Friday after a year of persevering with it. It has been Hell! I think I had six weeks of no bleeding directly after insertion but then had Bleeds for six to eight weeks at a time with no break.  I have put on weight, have bad skin, terrible mood lows, total loss of libido, which as a woman with a very high sex drive has been totally depressing! Pain in my hips and legs and a return of the cramps I used to have before the coil. It has been a year of my life wasted. Almost cost me my relationship. Now I have had the coil out for almost five days and can honestly say that I feel terrible. Am losing enough blood to  transfuse the local hospital, clots are rife!! I cannot contain the flow without a tampon, a sanitary towel and a bath towel to sit on and even then I am having to change every twenty mins. When I asked the Nurse practitioner, when she was removing the coil, if I was likely to get anything more than spotting, she stated that I would probably have some spotting but no bleeding unless I was due on anyway! Why are these people not aware of what is really happening? Have they done any research into after effects of Mirena? Does not look like it. I have now been put forward for an Endometrial Ablation so hopefully that will work :o)

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your going bleed!! The clots are normal due the uterine was shedding! Since the hormones from the mirena are gone it'll take a while for your body to adjust!! I too had the "evil" thinonion. I had it placed April 2012 dire to heavy bleeding, PCOS and endometriosis. Starting weight was 215, just had it removed Nov 5 2012 weighing 231!!! Toooooo much for me!! Been bleeding and clotting like I gave birth, but it's normal. Ive n been taking dong qua a herbal to control the cramping and multivitamin n iron because I'm anemic. If you exercise that heavy weaken the cramps too! Hope this helps and good luck!!!

Be happy it's out and you'll get back to normal soon!! I swear I will neve have anything foreign placed in my body, unless its a filling in my mouth lol!!!

I am so happy i found this. I had the coil fitted last year, i has irregular painful bleeds, got told it was normal when jn actual fact the coil had slipped down causing the heavy bleeding. I had it removed and now i am having even more heavy bleeding with really big clots. Its painful, causing me to feel tired and have little energy to do anything. It has also caused problems in my relationship due to how it affects the body. I would warn any woman to think twice about getting the mirena fitted or the copper coil. They mess your body up and to be quite honest there sh*t. Hope all sufferers from this stupid thing get better with it all soon x
