Hi, Gooner. Some of the other posters here seem to mention that their moles that were tied off turned scabby and dry (like a mushroom) after swelling up. It sounds like this is normal. Good luck! I am at the "big, red, and swollen stage." :)

Why does everybody else say it takes days but you say it only takes an hour?

I tied off a mole with dental floss just last week. It did work, but the process wasn't what I was expecting. It was....gross. From reading this website and a few others, I thought it would be quick and easy - the mole would swell at first, shrink down, turn black, then just fall off. That may be how it works for some, but it was not that simple for me. My mole wasn't that big (eraser sized, I suppose) and the floss was extremely tight. I would tighten the string several times a day until it actually hurt.

After a couple days, I noticed that the outer part of the mole had turned sort of black and crusty, but the middle of it was still normal. I left it alone for a few more days, waiting for the middle to dry up, too. It never did. I wasn't entirely sure what to do. The floss was as tight as it would go - so tight that I couldn't even begin to remove it. And the mole was starting to get oozy and painful and gross. I would wake up each morning with stains on my shirt and pillowcase (the mole was on the side of my neck).

So I just started picking at it, and the dried black parts would come off in bloody, sticky chunks. It didn't really hurt, but it was pretty much as disgusting as you're imagining. And that's what I had to do every day - pick off the black parts. After picking off the dead bits, the still-alive-and-healthy middle and underneath layers would bleed for a while, then dry up and turn black and the cycle would start over again. I just kept doing that, layer by layer, and it got smaller and smaller until I picked off the last of it. The whole labor-intensive process took a little over a week, but it honestly felt longer than that. (By the way, I also doused that sucker in rubbing alcohol like 10 times per day. I figured it was particularly important since I was having to put my hands on it all the time.)

After all that, I don't know if I would recommend the tying-off method or not. It was disgusting and painful and stressful and something I would never do again personally. Essentially though, it did work. Despite what a giant pain in the ass it was, I still removed a mole that had annoyed me for 15 years at home for free. You've got to weigh the pros and cons, I suppose. It's your body - do what you need to do. Good luck!

I've removed several myself and you have to take great care to prevent infection.  I clean the area thoroughly with an antiseptic cleaner, clean an very sharp pair of short handled shears, take ice and freeze the area, clean the area again with cleaner and then snip the mole off.  Put a triple antibiotice an a bandaid and before putting on the wound.  Leave the wound alone except for replacing the bandaid and anbiotic cream.

I don't dig down in the mole I just remove it flush with my skin.

You should know that I resorted to doing this myself after several unnecessary and nasty scars were left by determatologists.

I am thinking about trying this method as soon as I can get to the store to get the supplies. One is on my face and the other is on my back. I guess I will try my back first since it is less conspicuous. The only issue is that I dont want to walk around for a week with a bulbous blood pod on my face, all wrapped in dental floss. Is it ok to cover it while it is dying? Like can i put a loose headband over my forehead? I really am hopeful about this. The mole on my forehead is especially frustrating. I feel like it is all I can see in pictures of me, and kids just stare at it.... sometimes they poke it with their fingers and ask what it is. One kid even told me that I should "pop that hideous zit".... of course that kid was an id**t.

Yes, aloe vera works! I got rid of two moles this way. These two moles would rub on clothing at my waist and would become irritated. I read that if you put aloe on an irritated mole that it would dry up and fall off. This is exactly what happened. I kept aloe on them constantly and covered with a band-aid. Each one shriveled up and came off on the band-aid in about 4-5 days. I think the trick is getting the aloe into the core of the mole because I tried this on a mole that was NOT already irritated and it didn't do anything.

I just tied mine off last night, really tight with waxed floss. After about 5 hours I tied another piece around it really tight. Tonight it is half the size, and black.. It feels like I can just pull it off and that is what Im gonna do... so 24 hours for me.. P.S. if if doesnt pull off, Im cut just snip it... Its worth the 3 seconds of pain for a lifetime of reliefe that its finally gone...

I don't know for sure if it's working but I've used a knife to scrape two flat ones off. So far, one is not resurfacing at all, for over a week or two now.
The other is just beginning to leave me alone but I could feel that I had to keep digging at some gristle-like roots to get them gone. Ironically these things that doctors tell us to leave alone are easier to get rid of than warts.

If you have a reasonable pain tolerance (can take 0.1 seconds of pain), I just used a sharp pair of cuticle scissors and snipped them right off.  The skin bleeds for about 15 minutes with this method, but it's done right away :)
