I tied off a mole with dental floss just last week. It did work, but the process wasn't what I was expecting. It was....gross. From reading this website and a few others, I thought it would be quick and easy - the mole would swell at first, shrink down, turn black, then just fall off. That may be how it works for some, but it was not that simple for me. My mole wasn't that big (eraser sized, I suppose) and the floss was extremely tight. I would tighten the string several times a day until it actually hurt.
After a couple days, I noticed that the outer part of the mole had turned sort of black and crusty, but the middle of it was still normal. I left it alone for a few more days, waiting for the middle to dry up, too. It never did. I wasn't entirely sure what to do. The floss was as tight as it would go - so tight that I couldn't even begin to remove it. And the mole was starting to get oozy and painful and gross. I would wake up each morning with stains on my shirt and pillowcase (the mole was on the side of my neck).
So I just started picking at it, and the dried black parts would come off in bloody, sticky chunks. It didn't really hurt, but it was pretty much as disgusting as you're imagining. And that's what I had to do every day - pick off the black parts. After picking off the dead bits, the still-alive-and-healthy middle and underneath layers would bleed for a while, then dry up and turn black and the cycle would start over again. I just kept doing that, layer by layer, and it got smaller and smaller until I picked off the last of it. The whole labor-intensive process took a little over a week, but it honestly felt longer than that. (By the way, I also doused that sucker in rubbing alcohol like 10 times per day. I figured it was particularly important since I was having to put my hands on it all the time.)
After all that, I don't know if I would recommend the tying-off method or not. It was disgusting and painful and stressful and something I would never do again personally. Essentially though, it did work. Despite what a giant pain in the ass it was, I still removed a mole that had annoyed me for 15 years at home for free. You've got to weigh the pros and cons, I suppose. It's your body - do what you need to do. Good luck!
I've removed several myself and you have to take great care to prevent infection. I clean the area thoroughly with an antiseptic cleaner, clean an very sharp pair of short handled shears, take ice and freeze the area, clean the area again with cleaner and then snip the mole off. Put a triple antibiotice an a bandaid and before putting on the wound. Leave the wound alone except for replacing the bandaid and anbiotic cream.
I don't dig down in the mole I just remove it flush with my skin.
You should know that I resorted to doing this myself after several unnecessary and nasty scars were left by determatologists.
The other is just beginning to leave me alone but I could feel that I had to keep digging at some gristle-like roots to get them gone. Ironically these things that doctors tell us to leave alone are easier to get rid of than warts.
