I am 45 and had a total hysterectomy a year and half ago. They only left my ovaries but I was told I would no longer have a menostration but I have one every month. It's not heavy but it's there. Lately it's been heavier and now I must wear a pad. I have pain on my left side when I have to urinate. It's starting to scare me a little. This sucks because I thought all this mess was over with.

I am 46 years old and I had a total hysterectomy and colon resection about three months ago due to endometriosis. Both my ovaries were left. I started spotting this month and it freaked me out because the top of my vagina was sewed up and I did not expect to have any more bleeding since my uterus was removed. I will let you know what my doctor has to say.

I am 49 years old and had my hysterectomy in 1987 (June 2) when I was 25 years old. I have been plugging along for almost 24 years and forgot about periods and the normal woman things. Got married and divorsed and started dating again. After having sex with my man whom has an extremely large (I thought that was the problem) I started bleeding first in October 2010 but not too much and did not think about it. It happened again in November 2010 but again, nothing too much. Christmas Eve 2010 I bled so much that we had to stop having sex and I made a doctor's appointment. My doctor said I was still bleeding and cautorized the area which hurt, after 2 weeks I began having sex again without any problem until March 1, 2011. During sex I bleed a lot, almost enough to go to the hospital emerency but I did not go and made another doctor's appointment (note the bleeding was not enough to wear a pad at this time - just bleeding during/after sex). My doctor sent me to the OBYGN and after the week and a half to get in to see them I thought that I was not bleeding but was still bleeding around the cuff. It was a large open sore that would not heal. The nurse did a pap and wanted to do the 2 week culture on the pap because they are now looking for the original cancer that they caught in 1987 (never had radiation). I had to schedule an UltraSound which I did (the UltraSound was not only external but internal YIKES). Before I took off from work to get my UltraSound the doctor's office called and said they have approval for a CAT Scan from my insurance. This is scheduled and I will have the final conclusion next week on what they think is wrong. I wanted to say that I have read numerious blogs on this subject and am thankful that these are out there. Not too many people are having the same issues I am having after 24 year after a hystorectomy but knowing you are not alone helps. Thank you and because these blogs helped me, I will post the outcome of this.

Quote: Please write if you get an answer. I am in the same position. Had uterus AND cervix removed; it was a terrible surgery - LOTS of pain, inadequate pain control (nurses said they all had C-sections so felt I was 'exaggerating' the pain - they could not understand that the incision was not horrible, it was the pain INSIDE where everything had been removed), and a nearly two month recovery along with no sensation in genital region (now resolved), but ongoing urinary and fecal incontinence. What is worse is that, since the surgery, I have had my menstrual period, like clockwork. It is not spotting, but a full period, complete with cramping and pelvic ache, and lots of blood. I am so frustrated. My physician has no answers for me. It is, technically, impossible to be having a menstrual period without endometrial tissue (the inner lining of the uterus). But, I (supposedly) had both the uterus and cervix removed. A vaginal exam has proven to be "normal." I am planning on going to a larger medical center and finding someone of some renown in the field. My worry is that I have metastatic endometrial carcinoma, allowing for endometrial tissue to be where it ought not be, and allowing for bleeding when I have absolutely no uterus or cervix. The worst part is that the post-op path report provided no insight whatsoever about the status of the endometrium (neoplastic? invaded? - no comment at all (we knew it was at least a hyperplasia, based on the pre-op endometrial biopsy). I guess they thought there was no need to examine it if there was a SMALL biopsy taken prior to surgery. It would have been more reassuring if the uterus has been examined more thoroughly for endometrial anomalies and, particularly, neoplastic conversion/invasion. Nonetheless, if ANYONE has had the same experience (no uterus, no cervix, no endometriosis, but regular menstrual periods), please write.

I am 38, about to turn 39.  I had a partial hysterectomy in August 2007...this weekend, I noticed bleeding; almost cycle like.  My breasts have been extra sensitive for the past couple of weeks which is indicative of what my previous cycle time was like although I had VERY irregular cycles, which led to my hysterectomy.  With no insurance right now, I can't go to the doctor so I'm feverishly searching the web looking for any answer.

This is the craziest thing ever.  As many of you have said, the whole point of the removal was to STOP the cycles from happening.

I forgot that I posted this. I was dignosised with vagina cancer. The cancer was on the inside of me pushing against my bladder. After a PETScan, and my lynodes removed I am on a 5 week (28 days) treatment of 5 days of week of radiation and 1 day of week of chemo. I am now beginning my 4th week but 5 weeks is really approximately 6 weeks because no one says it is 5 weeks not 5 week days. After I complete this I am also beginning prepared for an internal radiation blast that only a few doctors knows how to do. The good news is that they are saying cure not remission. After everything is completed, they want to check my system to know how I was able to keep the cancer from growing for 24 years and what happened that my body finally could not stop it. I hope this helps you but go get checked right away!!!

It's a weird thing. I have irregular "phantom periods". They aren't monthly, they are hit-or-miss. Usually it starts where I have a dream of seeing a doctor and having a pap or something like that. Then it's using a public bathroom (TMI?) and finding blood, then I'm telling other people in my dream "you know, you can still have your period after a hysterectomy". In the awake world, I never have any bleeding as m surgery took uterus and cervice; however, with the ovaries intact I still have bloating/weight gain and moodiness. Strange, eh?

I  would suggest getting another opinion. You should not be bleeding. Do you have male or female doctors working for you? If it is a male please reconsider and get a female doctor. My opinion of male doctors are is they kill because they do not take female patenience seriously. I have not had a male doctor since my 1992 surgery that removed the last ovary. He did not believe me about my pain or symtomies (sp?). I left him after weeks of trying to fine out what it was, so I thought, on a Friday, went to dinner and got sick that night, throw up and vomit at the same time. Thought I had food posioning. Slept all Saturday and Sunday was ok for 10 minutes and then started throwing up and vomitting again. The doctor had me met him at the emergency room where they could not stop the pain, got 3 surgeons and they put me out. I woke up with I am so sorry, when they opened me up, my ovary had floated to the top and it was black and was bleeding on itself. If I waited one more day, I would have bleed to death, died. NO MORE MALE DOCTORS after that. Get a female, they are better and under our bodies. The only male doctor that I have now is my surgeons. You don't have too many choose on them. My cancer surgeron is male and when he told me I had the cancer it was not warm at all. I was finally ok with the cancer after I met the female doctors who's care I went to next which is the chemo and radiation doctors. There is a whole other world of cancer and you get a real eye opener if you do have it. Cancer does  not care . . . race, income class, nothing. If you stay positive you will be ok. You have cancer the cancer does NOT have you. Good luck :-|

I am having a hysterectomy next week.  My Dr told me upfront that if I left my cervix, I would have monthly spotting.  The cervix is support for the bladder and pelvic floor, so I opted to leave it along with both my ovaries.  Not sure why Dr's are not telling their patients that they will still have a monthly period by leaving in their ovary(s) and cervix.

I forgot about this posting until I received an email about it. I had cervix cancer again. It is not cervix cancer when you had a hystorectomy but it was a little left over that was in my for 25 years before it started to grow again. I went through 6 weeks of radiation (5 days a week) and chemo (1 day a week). I am still on disability but finally am fine.

I had the same problem. My doctor told me that 1 in 10 will still have spotting or a light period. So don't worry. Though I was so disappointed when mine returned. But on the bright side I haven't had anymore bleeding in over 1 yr.

I believe that you should be worried when there is bleeding. My bleeding ended up being a serious problem. Try to get someone to give you a CAT scan or MRI to ensure there is no internal problems. Remember that it is your life that you are talking about here and when I started bleeding during sex, I put off and the first time I went by what my doctor said but the second time she sent me to the OGYBN and it was serious. I had cervix cancer again even though I did not have a cervix due to my hystrorectomy. Sometimes they can not explain what is happening but you need to find out why you are bleeding.
