I am 51, for as long as I can remember I get these inner thigh spasms they come durring the night.
They are excruciating. Not the typical calf spasm..those are a piece of cake.
These spasms will wake you up! when you try to sit in bed, it tugs in the center of the inner thigh.

You can't stretch it because if you stretch it it tugs harder...dead center of the thigh.
if you walk it will tug hard..like its contracting pulses ...the same way it does at the calf but it hurts deep in the bone,
like your flesh and muscle are being twisted into a hard knot.

you can't sit because it will tug some more..nothing helps and no Doctor knows what it is.. I have been to many
they all think I'm just making it up. I can feel a slight sensation when I may have one and usually I am right.
No amount of quinine or electrolyte or excersice or heating pad makes it go away.
You'd think that at this point and time in the world..we can put a land rover on Mars..but can't figure out an inner thigh spasm is
and why it only happens to some people and not all!

I have been at a loss with this to the point where I have turned to drugs hardcore drugs to knock me out at night! Some people talk about night terrors..these are the real ones!

I too have horrible pain - have recently had a test for hormone levels (not usually done routinely) turns out I have a non functioning adrenal gland - perhaps this might help you

I havwe suffered with horrific cramps throughout body for a long time - finally doctor had my hormones tested turns out I also have a non functioning adrenal gland. I now take a steroid for it, and although I have some cramping nothing like before. I also had very extreme fatigue - good luck

I know how you feel - I'm experiencing the same symptoms. My Dr. said he didn't know either. I don't know what the answer is but at least it's somewhat comforting to know you're not alone in this. Maybe someone will be able to come up with a diagnosis and possible remedy.

I, too, am suffering with terrible cramps in my upper thighs, so bad that I cry and whine, an awful thing for my husband to hear and see.
I have been drinking Tonic Water, and I thought it was helping but last night had a terrible time. I take 2 Tylenol and a Flexeril and thought it was helping but now I guess not!

I am a loss of what to do. When I was on vacation for 10 days and was able to spend hours in the pool, I had NO cramps. What a great feeling it was.

I am glad to find this site, maybe one of us sufferers can find the answer!

I am61 and have been having these HORRIBLE cramps. It feels like the muscles are being ripped from the bone and torn out. I have to try to get to the shower and sit with the water as hot as I can stand it flowing over my thighs. Some times it takes 5 to 6 minutes to start getting some relief. Usually when they start I have two or three nights of them. Wish I knew why they quit. This site has been a Blessing as I have been looking for months for someone else having this problem. I have noticed that many of the posts are from 50 and over.

GET GLUCOSE Drink 8oz OJ, real soda (not caffeine cola - you're trying to sleep, right?), fruit chewy candy (chocolate might work but its fat siows absorption). If you get a fingerprick glucose tester and read it before bed and then when you launch with inner thigh pain, you will see you have been dropping rapidly. Either from too much insulin as diabetic or natural circadian drop (or response to bedtime snack) in "normal" folks.

I am 64 and have been waking up at night with the exact pain you describe. I just woke up with it starting in my left calf and then it also started in my right inner thigh. I could not move and the pain continued to intensify lasting 5 minutes.
I've been told to drink more water, and recently told to take magnesium
(half a dose of milk of magnesia). This was the worst ever.
It is terrifying because it wakes you up. I felt paralyzed and unable to breathe. The longest 5 minutes of my life. Your description is right on.
You think it is beginning to release and then it tightens even worse.
I've learned that you should not try to move until it completely subsides.

having experienced these same spasms for for 5 years now, now under control... it it a vitamin and mineral deficiency for me.

combination, calcium, potassium and magnesium, along with being iron deficient anemic... have a complete blood work panel done.

I'm on massive doses of each along with iron infusuions and the spasms have stopped...I still have dehydration which triggers the big toe up in the air and then the shin spasm, yes shin... that hurts... I drink gatorade G@ (low sugar) or pedialyte and it curbs the dehydration... no spasms

I suggest going to a homeopathic doctor they understand your body along with you better then a general practioner... that's who diagnosed me after 5 years of excrutiating pain and aggravation.

good luck everyone

hello, I am a 56 yr old female. last night was the first time my family witnessed while I suffered one of my spasm episodes and it scared them pretty badly. in fact they wanted to call 911. this was the 5th or 6th time in the past year that I have had spasms in both inner thighs at the same time preventing me from finding any comfortable position until it passes.  I am unable to sit, lay, walk, in fact any movement at all increases the intensity of the cramping.  I am reduced to a writhing animal like creature, curled up on the floor rolling side to side while clutching my legs, sobbing and making loud gutteral noises and begging for the pain to stop.  it usually does after 10-15 minutes, then my legs muscles are taught and sore for a few days afterwards like I ran a marathon or something.  I work out 4 hours per week, 2 hours of Zumba and 2 hours of strengthening & toning so I don't overdo it.  I have been getting MRI testing every 3 months for the past year, due to different symptoms, to rule out MS and the doctors have said that they do not believe I have MS.  but then again these type of spasms are very common with MS patients.  Thanks for allowing me to read and vent.

I had experienced these excruciating thigh cramps in the middle of the night about 3x--the pain was so bad I was on the brink of fainting, and I consider myself having a very high threshhold for pain.  My Dr. suggested I begin taking magnesium supplements every day.  It took a while but I haven't had another one (fingers crossed) for a couple months, so maybe he's onto something?  It's worth a try as these supplements are very inexpensive.  Just check w/a Dr. first to be sure it's OK.

I too have an adrenal gland insufficiency - take steroids for it. Has definitely helped with the fatigue, but doesn't help much with the terrible cramps I get. Still hoping to find an answer.

Same, same as above so won't repeat. I won't mention I've never had the inner thigh spasms at night because it might give them an idea. I usually get mine while riding in the car. Not too bad to pull off locally but on the freeway in Texas I thought I would die before we could pull off. Try to stand up, walk, bend---anything!! They quit when they are ready. The doc at pain clinic (BAD back for years) put me on "mag oxide 400 mg" 1 per day and "Gabapentin 100 mg, 1 tab 3x daily". (the Gabapentin is a generic for Neurontin). Been on for almost a month and haven't had a spasm yet. I get a feeling in the thigh almost daily that makes me think one is coming on so I move slightly and nothing yet has come of those.
