I have the same pain on my inner thigh only to be described as a major spasium with wrenching extreme pain. My left leg locks bent in place and recently I notice just seconds before it starts a bulg of a muscle or something on the front thigh. The pain sends me to the ground. Its usually when I'm waking up and not out of bed yet. I have had a L4L5 issue for years. I'm not on any of the meds that you mentioned. I wish that I could stop it, solve it because I'm worried it could happen when I'm driving or worse.

Joanie B, a few pages back someone suggested a cure that has really worked. I can NOT prevent these, but when they happen I do the opposite of what you think you should do. I at first thought it was a cramp that had to be stretched out. As you know, trying to stretch it out especially trying to stand upright is excruciating. But once I came to grips that it is a spasm and you need to move that muscle the oppostie direction it changed everything for me. When that spasm happens I lay on my side, cross my ankles and clench my thighs as tightly together as I can. The spasm ends sometimes in seconds, sometimes in just a minute. Best of luck!

I have suffered from these horific inner thigh cramps for about 8 years and can identify with you all.

When they first heppened I thought that i was dying. The feeling of nearly passing out as the pain goes from the thigh into you head is truely frightening.

Like you all I scream in pain, cry and if it happens in public feel very embarassed.

It happened in a petrol forecout once and passers by through my husband was attacking me as I was screaming so much.

I have had a Dopla test and the blood flow is OK.

I have tried quinine - bananas, drink lots of water etc and nothing works.

As many of you I could easily take my own life that suffer the pain which is so physical it is like the muscles grinding together so hard that I feel like my knee cap is going to dislocate. Often there is bruising - one thing is when the pain goes there is a strange feeling of utter bliss!

The cramps also tend to happen at night especially the same night that I have done just a few minutes of gentle exercise.

I have found something that works, for me, and that is when the first "tingling" of a cramp come or a full blown attack arrives I tie a scarf sightly around the thigh where the cramp is happening and it stops the cramp almost immeditely. I never go anywhere without my scarf.

I have no idea why it works unless it is something to do with compressing the blood flow to the muscle.

If anyone else had tried tying something around the muscle in spasm - or a doctors oppinion - I would like more information - Barbara - muscle spasm sufferer

I wanted to repost this information about magnesium and secondly about Irish Spring. Try it...It works. I had a 'horrid' cramp a few weeks ago and was confused as to why these were back. then realized i hadnt slept with soap for 2 nights and 'WHAM' there it was, back again. Its weird, but, who cares. It works. I still take that particular magnesium, also.

I have been getting these same thigh spasms for 10 years now. The only relief I get is to literally crawl into the hot tub or use Tiger balm as a massage product. These damn things hurt like a knife in my inner thigh. I have a brother with Muscular Dystrophy and thought it might be that. He's 52, I'm 59 and formerly quite athletic. I can take pain, I would play basketball on a sprained ankle so as not to be benched, but this pain is horrible. I am trying to do more thigh exercises to rebuild muscles that have not been worked for a while. It does seem to be started by a sudden movement getting out of a chair or out of bed. so I try to go deliberately slow. Good luck to you.

You describe exactly what I'm going through. My doctor tells me to stretch. Period. I tell him I DO stretch, before and after exercise. I drink plenty of water all day long. That these episodes are so excrutiating, I just want to die. I am filled with terror when I feel an episode coming on.

This is by far the worst pain I have ever felt in my life.  I to have gone to vascular doctors and not anyone can give me answers.  I have tried Potassium, drinking water, over the counter leg cramp tablets just don't know what else to do.  The pain will wake me up at night, I get them while traveling in a car and I'm becoming afraid to fly b/c I never know when it will happen.  Going to a heart specialist to c if it can b related in anyway!!!!

I get them too sometimes; nearly pass out from the pain - just have to wait it out. It makes going to bed not very inviting. Never get it during the day. It always happens in the same leg, and when I'm laying on the opposite side with that leg thrown over the other one. I'm taking something called "Cal Max" that is powder form of magnesium, calcium and vitamin C; it's helped with the regular cramps in feet and thighs, but this one is KILLER. Can't find out what the cause is either.

So glad I found this site! My issue started in July 2012 when I had my first ever colonoscopy. A week later I got up one morning was getting ready for work and had cramps in my thigh so bad that I screamed. I went and layed down for about 30 minutes got back up everything was fine so I went on to work. the next morning the pain in my woke me up. It took a few minutes but the pain away so again I'm wondering what's going on but I got up went and took care of my animals, came back in the house and was sitting down and the pain started up in my thigh again. This time it put me in the floor and i was screaming as the pain was so bad. Ended up in the emergency room and subsequently the hospital for three days. Turns out that my potassium and magnesium levels were critically low. For the past eight months my thigh just hasn't felt right. I felt like I was going to have the spasms in my thigh again. What I've been having lately are more like little baby spasms rather than in the whole thigh. I did end up seeing an orthopedist and he tells me I have bursitis and I start physical therapy next week. I'm not sure what I think about all this I know that I still have those little spasms though not nearly as severe as the first time. I think I'm more scared of having the really bad spasms like the first time. I've been sleeping with a heating pad and taking pain pills for three weeks waiting for my physical therapy appointment. I've been taking potassium and magnesium supplements as well so I don't think that's the problem. I'm sorry to hear that other people are having this horrible pain but I am glad to find that I'm not the only one!

Thank you so much for your description.  I have been experiencing these same muscle spasms, cramps for about two years. I am 63 years old. They pain is unbearable.  I am trying different things, but complete relaxation (at times impossible) is all that helps. Laying flat and crying, biting on finger and  trying to let body relax can help, but it takes every thing inside me to do it.  Help us please doctors!!  This is real and so painful it is indescribable..good to know a person is not alone in this horrible situation.  Scared at times to go to bed..

I know the feeling of wanting to die. If this pain were lasting days I don't know what I would do. Total relaxation is the only thing I have found that helps. I scream, cry, bite my finger, lay flat on the floor or couch and try to relax my leg completely. Sometimes just patting the top of the thigh helps or at least distracts from the pain. Good luck...if you have any new ideas be glad to share. Thanks again - you are not alone

I have been hiking and now have started getting that horrible inner thigh cramp/spasm everytime that I have to climb a hill.  Until yesterday it only happened once or twice a hike but yesterday was horrible.  It happened everytime I led with my right leg (right thigh pain).  It got to be a very slow hike as I had to lead with my left leg and basically bring my right leg stiff legged over the rocks/trees/etc.  No stretch helped.  Today the muscle on my inner thigh is so sore to touch.  I was very well hydrated and used electrolyte tabs in my water.  Anyone else had anything like this?  Any suggestions?
