I have the same exact thing going on now, nothing will stop the pain. My neurologist says its carp. tunnel and I need surgery. But I am not ready for that just yet , my husband thinks I keep pulling a muscle reaching for things. I don't know but it is painful.

Since Ashlby81 got such good responses, thought I'd ask....I'm having essentially the same problem with pain in the neck radiating into the left shoulder, down the arm and into the hand.  Unlike Ashby81, I do not have numbness, but instead, serious pain in that hand, particularly the thumb, pinkie and ring fingers, as well as a stabbing pain in the palm.  I know that I have two bulging disks in the neck as well as bilateral carpal tunnel.  I'm open to all suggestions.  Thus far, I'm alternating 800 mg. Ibuprofen with Aleve, hot showers beating on the neck, and thermacare.  Get very minor and very temporary relief.  Thanks ahead of time!

I had the similar problem and after MRi it was diagnosed as a tear in the supraspinatus tendon

I think you should go to a good ortho doctor. Sometimes a gp does not care to dig too deep.

Hi eve, bulging discs turn into herniated discs. My numbness is only upon waking in the morning, the pain in my neck, chest, shoulder, shoulder blade and arm are constant though out the day. If you play around with google or bing you can find good articles and images of what nerves exit which discs, from there you can see what muscles are affected by which nerves. Of course, every ones body is a little different and nerves and overlap.

Sounds like you may have one or more herniated discs in your cervical spine. The paine radiates down your shoulder and arm into your hand and fingers. Make them order an MRI and rule that out. I've had surgery for this and pain was gone now for 26 years.

I also live with the constant pain in my upper left shoulder. It's been worse in the mornings, hurts when I'm laying down at night. Lately my left hand has been numb. I had been diagnosed with a problem with a disk in my upper neck. I have a caring doctor who gave me tests on my heart before his diagnosis and that was ruled out. Mine is also a pinched nerve and although I resisted understanding how this is effecting my let shoulder in this way, I surrendered. The doc said neck exercises will relieve it so I slowly stretch my neck daily and I raise my left arm up slowly with my right arm which helps ease the pain. My doctor does not recommend surgery for this issue. When I look at medical conditions that others have to live with, I think, ok I can live with this one!

How do you know it's not rotator cuff injury? Sounds like it could be? Would hanging from a chin up bar injure you more if it was?
