i had my IUD placed in, in august. the initial symptoms were less painful, and more...uncomfortable. it created an odor for the first month. though i found out this was natural, it was completely uncomfortable for me (i am neurotic about hygiene. this symptom made me go crazy a bit, showering upwards of 7x a day). 5 months later and the nausea has increased. my doctor prescribed a nausea med. but as i have never been on birth control prior to this experience (i'm 32), i think my body is just...rejecting it. i have a brain aneurysm, barely over a year old, so pregnancy isn't even an option (it's ok. i have a beaming, bright and beautiful 2 year old daughter), but this mirena doesn't seem like one either. anyone know of another birth control, just as effective, with less residual side effects?

you should probably go see your doctor, as stated above (if the nausea is accompanied by dizziness or headaches, you should see you doctor immediatly)

I had my mirena placed yesterday and I have burning nausea... reading these post I am afraid this is what it is going to be like for a good length of time... question for the people who have had it for months even years do you feel it is worth the side effects?

I have my iud placed in for 1 year now and everyday i feel like I am pregnant. I feel nauseated most times and and constanly tired. My sex drive decreased a whole lot.  Finally, I am taking it out on 3/6/13. Sometimes, i just want to reach up and pull it out myself. Before the mirena I had a copper iud, that one I was ok with. But this mirena with the harmone is killing me, i feel sick all the time. This type of protection defeat the purpose.

Do you feel all better now? How long did it take you until you saw a difference in how you were feeling? I had my Mirena inserted March 2013 and removed last tuesday and a copper coil inserted in the mirena's place, after i had experienced non stop overwhelming severe nausea for over five months, a week later, no difference.. I hope too :(

the Nausea has stopped but the headaches haven't... I have no sex drive at all... maybe that is how it is a birth control... you never want to have sex therefore you never get pregnant!! I haven't stopped bleed since I got it about 5 months ago.. I am starting to rethink this as well... Please let me know how you have been without it!! Thanks

I got mirena just 2 months ago, 8 weeks postpartum. I'm experiencing no sex drive, migraines, nausea, cramps(no period but I also bf), lower back pain (thought to be from epi until I read these posts) accompanied by nausea, dizzy spells, shakey occasionally, very bad mood swings, depression (might be ppd but it seems linked to iud), suicidal thoughts, aggression, hurt to try sex (could not), sluggish feeling, tired. I have an appt to have it removed tmrw. Also, similar to previous poster, I had to pull over for 10 minutes feeling like I was going to die on the 10 minute drive home after getting it inserted. I felt very very sick, overheated (in the middle of winter), extremely dizzy, dry mouth and crawled to bed when I finally made it home. I did feel better the next day. Now suddenly I am feeling major side effects and I am not chalking them up to ppd or being temporary, get this m-f-er out! From reading, it gets worse. I need my life back. My baby needs her momma. I will update.

I just got my Mirena inserted yesterday 4/25/13. I have never had children before, this is fixing a constant bleeding issue. I did experience quite a bit of pain in the insertion becuse my cervix is super small. Cramping was very bad my first day and bleeding occured. The cervix is a really sensitive thing, though and will bleed from the smallest prick. My insurance covered all but $30.00 of Mirena, which I am very happy about.

Today I woke up feeling fine. There are some cramps, nausea, and very much fatigued. However, there is no constant sharp pain and the other symptoms are going away with just Advil and a bit of Excedrin. Mint tea really helps too.

I know the levels of Mirena were adjusted this year to atone for a better mix of the active hormones within it. Perhaps the super bad side effects are form the poorly balanced ones before.

Good luck to everyone and all feel better!!!

I have had mine in for about a year and a half and have always had nausea since the mirena but recently it has been so intense that I have to go home from work because I feel like I am going to throw up or pass out. I am calling this week to see about having it removed because of that and the fact that my bleeding is all over the place. One week of spotting then 3 days of bleeding and then maybe a few free days and then it happens all over again. Mine wasnt for birth control because I had my tubes tied but they put it in because they couldnt stop me from bleeding. I think the next step will either be the pill or that novisure.

I've had my IUD for 1 1/ yrs and have had horrible symptoms the past year. I'm on an antidepressent, blood pressure medicine, have gained 20 lbs, I have severe diarrhea, no energy, severely depressed, I could lay in bed all day if I didn't have two school aged boys, .  I've been a mess the past year and it just hit me today.... maybe it's the Mirena; so I decided to go online and see if anyone else is having problems.  WOW!!! I can't believe what I've been reading.  I am going to switch doctors... my ob/gyn was the one who put me on antidepresant.  Really?  Maybe it's related to the IUD... I am really shocked, but feeling better that I'm not the only one going through this.
