I found this answer to a similar question on another website...

This may simply be an over use phenomema. Holding scissors can press on the nerve that supplies sensation to the thumb and it has probably been traumatized. Nerve recovery is the slowest of all of the body’s tissues. If it hasn’t resolved in a week or two, I’d see your doctor for an evaluation.

I had a similar problem that was caused by extensive handwriting during my final exams. I got an MRI for it, and i was told by the doctor that nothing would heal this except for time. It was suggested that I take anti-inflammatory during the day (over the counter, advil) and make sure to take my vitamins (apparently maybe your body doesn't produce a certain kind of mineral that is helpful in the healing process- so the vitamins were just a suggestion). they told me i did not need to take the advil at night bc i wouldn't be using my thumb while sleeping.

I've been having the issue now for about 6 weeks. But i have noticed marked improvement since I got that medical advice 2.5 weeks ago.

I've just experienced a numb thumb for about 20 minutes. My wife looked it up on Google and found something called 'carpal tunnel syndrome', which relates to what I guess you'd called trapped or twisted nerves. I flung my arms around for 5 minutes and it went away. Possibly, it may have just been something caused by idly resting my arm on the corner of my desk this morning. Hope this helps.

I think most of the cases here can be CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome)
it has numbness in the thumb, pinky and ring finger,
here is a link if it helps. if not that it might be a bruised nerve.

i have the same problem in my right thumb with the numbness and everything. and its not my whole thumb just somewhat one side.

and everyone who says its carpal tunnel syndrome... well its not.. cuz that involves tingling that goes to about your elbow and more of your hand not one finger.
i too was using scissors to cut up old mail and thats when i started feeling it thinking my hand was just going to sleep. its only been a day but im assuming as well as a few others on here that it is a bruised nerve or whatever.
but.. i know for a fact its not carpal tunnel .... just had to clear that up...

Hi, I too have had this issue upon waking one day. No injury I can recall, etc. It's been ongoing off/on for about a month and is now subsiding finally. In my case it almost feels like a bruised bone right at the base of the thumb. Being a self proclaimed "good self-diagnoser" I believe it is a trapped or irritated ulnar nerve. My chiro agreed when I saw him this week. My issue doesn't seem as annoying or severe as yours however it is a possibility as others have mentioned carpal tunnel or an ulnar nerve issue. Usually these things can clear up with proper therapy, ice or heat, anti-inflammatories, etc. Do you sleep on your side? That is what caused my issue most likely. A few nights of lying on my back and being concious of not lying on my arm, proper posture etc along with stretching helped me so far. Hope this helps some of you as I know what it's like to worry and not know =)

Additionally to my last reply, nerves anywhere in the neck, shoulder, and arm can cause havoc resulting in various hand/finger issues.

I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like there could be some carpal tunnel action going on here?

Many people are describing different types of numbnesses and they are likely to have different causes and remedies. I have numbness from the base of my thumb nail down to the bottom of the middle digit. It is on the top of my thumb, more to the right side.

I bruised the top of my right hand, near the fleshy part between the thumb and center of the hand. I was at a party last night and don't really remember how it happened, but I just noticed it. It was kind of surprising to see how many people are experiencing this problem. But I would say that this is definitely temporary nerve damage.

I also began getting chronic numbness on the left side. This causes numbness in my left arm, most specifically the pinky and ring, although my whole arm has been known to fall asleep. I believe this is due to a shoulder injury + sleeping on my arm. Before the injury, I never had the issue and I sleep on my arms frequently.
