As some of the post suggest, it could be a bruised or damaged nerve. This concerns me because I have had other neurological symptoms for two years now. My mother has been diagnosed with CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demylination Syndrome) and when I started having similar symptoms as her, a neurologist told me I simply have BFS (Begnine Fasicilation Syndrome). We are both seeing a new neurologist who thinks we are both misdiagnosed. We may have something called HNPP (Hereditary Neuropathy with liability to Pressure Palsy, formerly know as Tumultuous Neuropathy).
So basically, I'm worried I damaged my nerve and this is some sort of pressure palsy. If I do have HNPP, I'm missing one of my two PNP22 genes which helps to heal the mylin around damaged nerves. Is there any supplements or medicine known to help the regeneration of nerve cells or mylin? A quick Google search suggested some things that help to prevent the nerve damage in the first place, but I can't seem to find anything proven to help regeneration.
Very interesting. Part of my thumb went numb early morning on a road trip. The inside top portion of my right thumb, a rectangle type shape from base of nail to my joint vertical and about 3/8" horizontal. It occurred after an intense week of typing and mouse use (about 70+ hours). No bumping on my hand, no contact injury, no additional occurances of note with hand. I sleep on my back or on my left side, so that would not be it.
That was 1 week ago today. I've been periodically testing the area with a pointy object (not piercing the skin) to gauge area and sensitivity. Numb area has slightly decreased in size and I no longer need to press with as much force in order to have feeling.
I have experienced no pain or active "tingling" sensation on any other part of my right hand or anywhere else (feel free to giggle, I did, but I only mean it from an analysis standpoint, ha!)
After intense web research (disclaimer: I simply started with Google), I sincerely believe it to be nothing more than a damaged nerve. Where? Not sure exactly but I would bet someplace near where the thumb meets the wrist. There's a bundle of nerves there and that area is under constant tension and stretching during actions such as scissor use, typing, mouse use and wrist resting on an edge of a desk.
Since mine is improving (but definitely still noticeable) I am going to cross MS, brain damage, and CTS off my list (whew! thankfully, was very concerned).
If anyone had this and it eventually went away completely, please post. If you have this now, when/if it does go away, please post.
I've been waking up the last few days with little to no feeling in the last two fingers on my right hand and the bottom of my forearm just pins and needles. And today I wake up with the same feeling and its hours later and the numb sensation is still there?? Im 24 years old so im ruling carpal tunnel out LoL its just weird to me that its only been the last three days that I've been experiencing it?
Ive had numbness in my right thum for the past two days and im abit worried! its also stinging a little bit,& people are saying it might be a blocked nerve but im not sure:L im going to the doctors tomorrow. but if anyone has had the same problem and knows what it is, please let me know?! thanks:)
I had a similar situation after spending 4 hours in cutting card paper. my right hand thumb was numb and had a weird tingly sensation. even after 3 days it didn't get well! then i put a splinter on my thumb and taped it with my index finger so that my thumb doesn't move at all. It did take 4 days like that but at the end of it my thumb was back to normal! try it, it's worth it!
I posted 5 months ago and a quick update. The tingly sensation went away after about 2 months, but there is still an odd lingering numbness in spots. It is improving, but I have been making conscious efforts to massage the area constantly and refrain from activities posted on this board (i.e. cutting paper and cardboard). The typing unfortunately is not something I can refrain from, but am sure to stop much more often for slightly longer periods. I believe that one day it will heal completely.
Thanks for the update "jackdrews". Google sent me here with the same problem. Mine started after a long gaming session, but is exactly how you described your affected area. My thumb was pressed against something for a long period of time, then the next day, from the tip of my thumb down to the knuckle below my nail is numb, but only on the inside portion of the thumb. It has been like this for about 6 days now. I assumed it was a pinched/damaged nerve, and would heal with time and rest.
On a side note, if I tap the affected area at the knuckle with my finger, it will send a pulse out to the tip of my finger. Feels kinda weird. I'm assuming I have found the nerve.
Anyway, thanks for your update as it seems noone else who posted actually followed up with an update. Hoping mine heals itself soon.
