I was looking up causes of thumb numbness and this was the first page I found. I was cutting coupons out for at least a good hour when I noticed my right thumb started to go numb, more just where I was putting pressure on the scissors on the outer side. It's been 12 hours since it's been numb, so I'm thinking that it's a bruised nerve. Going to try taking ibuprofen to see if it helps with any inflammation. It doesn't bother me too much though.

My right thumb is numb and it's been like this for 3 days now and I'm worried as well can anyone explain this, my friends think it might be carpel tunnel or nerve damage.

It's been over a year since you posted this but I had the same thing happen. I had been using a hair straightener (I don't use it a lot so I didn't know exactly how to do it so I had been using it for atleast 45 minutes ) and after I stopped my right thump (the palmer fingerprint part) was numb. It stayed numb for atleast 2 weeks. I had a problem before with my tongue being numb after getting wisdom teeth removed for a good 6 months, so I thought I would just always have nerve problems. Today I was sitting down and I got up and right once I did I felt the numbness in my thumb return. It's been a year since the last time it happened but it was on the same thumb, same place. I figure it will go away again I just don't know what would have even caused it this time.

If it is just numbness and tingling of the thumb it would not be a carpal tunnel problem. Although the median nerve which runs through the carpal tunnel does supply the thumb, if it was carpal tunnel syndrome you would also experience symptoms in the other fingers.

If it is just in the thumb it would be bruising or trauma to the digital branch of the median nerve that supplies the thumb. This nerve can be pressed on while using scissors, creating the symptoms described. It should go away over time.

Hope that helps!

I would say the first time would have been from the way you were holding the straightener, it must have pressed on one of the digital nerves supplying the thumb. The wisdom teeth event may have been from when they numbed your mouth? perhaps they clipped a nerve supplying your tongue. Not sure about the last one? Did you use you hands to push yourself up?

Sounds like Donald Trump is president.

The limp makes it sound like a stroke? Scissors won't do that.

That sound like sign of a stroke. If you haven't already you should see a doctor asap.

I have fingertip right thumb numbness/tingling for 10 days now 24/7....before that for 2 weeks I had pain in upper part of thumb wrapping around the finger(phalange part of the thumb)..not sure if it's RSI or a torn UCL in the thumb?Have had tests done:X-ray,labs to test for autoimmune disorders, nerve test,(pending results)...
It's in my dominant hand too...I do get on my iPhone/iPad/E-charting as well(nursing) frequently....wrist splinting they say helps and rest the area as much as possible..meanwhile waiting for diagnosis...
