Hi. Just read your entry. I have the exact same symptoms as you. Needle like pain in side of knee when kneeling. Thought at first that I was kneeling on something sharp dropped in the carpet. Now I just dicovered that that area is numb. Did you ever find out what your problem was? I know it's been some time.

No, I haven't got an answer yet. Will post if I make any progress.

On the top of my left knee its numb and it really swollen and when I bend it it burns in the spot that its numb..... and it freaking me out

It's called tendonitis. I happen to be suffering from this as well and it will eventually go away. Icing it 1-3 times a day helps to get rid of the swelling. Also, try not to put pressure on your injured knee.

Went to doctor. He said it was a pre-patellar bursa neuroma. In other words I somehow damaged the nerve that crosses the front of the knee either in front or behind (can't remember where exactly) the front of the bursa sac that sits in front of the knee cap. He said it will take several months, but that it will heal.

+1 -- I never imagined I'd see such a specific description of what's been going on with my knee, repeated among so many people! The sharp pain when kneeling, going on for 3-6 months or so, then increasingly noticeable numbness just a couple of inches to the side of and below my left knee. Sometimes something like an unreachable itch, too, -- unreachable in the sense that the numbness means that scratching doesn't do anything for the itch.
I can't guess the cause -- no trauma, no particular exertion that I know of. Could have bumped it in a fall while cross-country skiing and not noticed at the time. And it's not a serious bother so far, so I'll just wait and mention it at my next general checkup in 6 months or so. I just wanted reassurance that it's not a symptom of anything scary, having seen a reference to something distantly similar caused by dangerous blood clot. But sounds like this isn't that.

Hi

I had the same problem, I couldn't even run my hand over the nerve at the front of the kneecap before. I work out three or four times a week and have had the pain for about 5 months. It's gone away completely in a short time once I started stretching the adductor muscles on the inside of the thigh. They were pretty tight and as they've loosened up the pain has pretty much gone away. I guess maybe they were tight enough to cause some problems in the knee alignment. See if the same thing works for you. I used a standing sideways lunge to stretch them out as a seated straddle caused me to strain them a few times in the beginning. Hope this helps.  Anne

I have had the same problem, also in my left knee.  Mine is not painful at all, it just feels pin & needle like... I can feel it when I touch it but the sensation is definitely off - like it is asleep like when you sit on your legs funny.

Since mine has no pain, I immediately went to the worse thoughts that it was early onset MS or something like that... I sure hope not.  I had some swelling in my ankle and numbness a while back near the Achilles tendon, which I had a cortisone injection for.  Now that's fine, but the numbness moved up to the side of my left knee.

I am very confused, thinking it must be a nerve thing - not sure though. Thought on MS?  Not sure if symptoms are same.

Just wondering if anyone has seen a chiropractor about this problem and if so, did it help.

Mine is not a pain...more like a bee stinging really hard...and a stretch of skin or flesh is numb about a foot long. was worried about a clot. I do have back problems..2 compressed disks....l-3,l-4 and l-4,l-5. Could this be causing my problem...

I have the same thing. It started with a sharp pain in the knee when I was bathing my grandchild which I ignored and kept ignoring. That stopped but then the numbness began. I went to the orthopedic doctor and he said it was a nerve issue and nothing could be done and it would get better after a period of time. It got worst and would hurt mainly at night while I was sleeping. It would hurt so bad I would be up half the night and started using a heating pad along with aleve. I read all the posts and decided to try and stretch that side just by side-bending and stretching. Anything that pulls the hip and outside of leg. I don't mean for 30 minutes or anything, just for a few minutes each day. I immediately noticed results. For the past week, I've slept better than I have in six months. I've even noticed the numbness isn't as bad. Hopefully, it'll keep getting better. It's worth the try!

I have the exact same symptoms as described on this thread that started at the same time as you (3rd trimester). I am now 5 weeks postpartum and I feel like gh numbness and pains are worse than when I was pregnant. I was just curious if you ever figured out what was causing it all or a solution?

I'm a chiropractor who actually had this same exact condition explained so many times here... extreme burning on the lateral side of the knee cap, which turned to numbness a couple of months later. I've been a chiropractor for about five years now and haven't had anyone come into the office for the problem. Will chiropractic adjustments to the knee help? While I believe adjusting the knee can help, you're going to get most of the relief by simply stopping the action that caused the irritation in the first place.

I was unsure what to do, so I went to a clinic that did an EMG to check the nerves. Just before the test the doctor administering the test told me it was likely a waste of time because it's such a small area that the EMG will probably be normal... and he was right. In my case, I was crushing a small nerve in my knee every time I knelt down to change my baby's diaper. Once the nerve is irritated, just about anything... even just bending the knee or grazing it on the side will create that 'carpet-burn' feeling.

The pattern with mine... the burning became increasingly worse over a three month period. Started to burn when just flexing my knee... then anytime I barely touched it. About the third month it went numb. After doing the EMG... maybe four months in, I stopped bending and kneeling on it. It probably took another two to three months and all the symptoms went TOTALLY AWAY. Sitting here now... maybe 10 months later I don't feel it at all.

To to recap... just stop putting direct pressure on your knee... like kneeling on it and it will likely disappear over a few months time.
