I was on Synthroid for the last year because my blood test should borderline hypothyroidism. Then they increased my dosage to 100mcg, I gained about 30lbs in two months, had insomnia and a number of friends and family ask if I was pregnant. I eventually lost the weight and reduced the amount to 80mcgs until just recently my doctor wanted me to take another blood test before he gave me a refill. The blood test 2 months ago showed the dosage wage to high and I was considered hyper so my doctor had me slowly decrease it again. I am 5'5" 110lbs, run 5 miles a day and also eat healthy, but work hard to stay fit. Once I went down to 50mcgs the insomnia came back so I slowly and my blood work stayed the same so I slowly kept decreasing. I still couldn't sleep and felt so depressed that I went of the synthroid 8 days ago. I've since gain 4lbs, but sleep better (only 6 hours), which is better than 4hours. I hope to just stay off for a month and do the hypothyroid diet of fruit, nuts, veggies and not eating configurar vegetables. I am scared of gaining weight. Have you noticed any stability in your weight when you went off synthroid? Is there anyone out there who went off synthroid and was able to maintain or lose the weight gained on synthroid?

Thank you so much for this post and to all the replys - Thank you. Last July I went on the South Beach Diet and was so successful getting my weight down. Now I'm on synthroid and it's going up rapidly. I had no symptoms before, just a blood test that showed extremely low tsh. Well, I do not have a problem with energy as I play tennis, walk, run, hike - I was fine - I'm just going to stop taking it, thanks again.

Yes, I have been on 100mcg of Synthroid since April 2,2013 as the endocrinologist takes me off Cytomel (currently 5mcg). It is now June 6.I am trying to give this an honest trial but it took until this week actually to feel so bad I phoned to his office. Not only has my stomach become larger I have gained 9 lbs., I am bloated ,irritable, so tired I crave sweets and eat. It is a cycle of tired , eating and unable to get myself going. I am a daily long distance walker and I am so tired it is difficult to do. My friends and family feel I am argumentative.

I have been taking 25 mcg of Synthroid per day for about 5 weeks to treat recently diagnosed Hashimoto's Disease and hypothyroidism. I have gained 6 pounds and my bouts of fatigue have worsened. I was told that the meds would improve my metabolism. I called the doctor to express my concerns and she said in rare cases the introduction of the Synthroid into the system can actually result in the system shutting down. She seemed to think it would be temporary. I have a niece who was taking Synthroid for the same diagnosis, and she said it took a year of fluctuating improvements and setbacks before she got into balance. So I don't know what to think, it is certainly discouraging. My acupucturist has recommended a special intestinal cleanse, and adherence to a gluten free diet to address the underlying auto immune disorder (Hashimoto's).

I am glad to see I am not alone!  I have been taking Synthroid for about 16 years (I am 38) and have continued to gain weight constantly ever since I started taking it!  I started at about 140lbs (never having to watch what I eat), and am now about 230lbs!  I am at a place where something has to give - I can't keep on like this.  I had not known there were other drug possibilities.  I am calling my doc Monday and will try to get to the bottom of this!

Thanks!

I have been taking the generic synthroid. 0.137 mg. I am the biggest i have ever been. I had my thyroid removed in April and at first I lost about ten pounds. Now I have gained it all back plus some. I have thought about not taking anything for the replacement but I read that it could cause a heart attack. I do not what that to happen but I am sick of being a size 14! I use to be in a 6. I am so tried all the time.!!!!!:-(
