OK, I KNOW what it is, but you are going to say Im wrong:
I had tons of tonsillitus diagnoses, then I had mono...and I just found out I have HASHIMOTO's THYROIDITUS. I can NOT believe this is a disease! One in 10 people have thryoid diseases. Hashimotos is caused by an INFECTION.
Basically, your body starts attacking itself, and you NEVER GET 100% BETTER
ARE YOU EXHAUSTED?
FEEL LIKE IT"S A GOITER ON YOUR THROAT?
ACHEY?
Look up Hashimoto's and PLEASE tell me if this has been helpful.
***For first time swollen throat people, Im not talking to you! Just the people with recurring sore throats/mucus/pain, etc*****

My left side of my throat also has been hurting for a week. At times my ears will start to hurt. I thought my tonsils were swollen because its not like a sore throat it just an annoying feeling in your throat. I know that I have tonsil stones and I don't know if that is the cause of it, but i would like some kind of answers. I went to the clinic and she didn't know what it was, so she took a test and I had to go bring it to the hospital and they still havn't called.

I had exactly the same symptoms, left it until 11PM tonight, and organised a housecall doctor (the benefits of Australia) after having extreme difficulty swallowing and moving my mouth after 2.5 weeks of on-off symptoms. He said straight away after checking out my throat that it was a severe case of tonsillitis - and that an ulser had formed with extreme possibility of spreading around my throat and causing difficulty breathing. I went to the night pharmacy and purchased the antibiotics (some form of xcillin). If you are experiencing a second round of symptoms i would strongly suggest visiting a GP. If you feel short of breath, call the ambulance, thats what I was told.
Hope this has been of some help!

I've had the same exact symptoms for about a month (both sides of my throat). Took Amoxicillin, felt better and it came back to the left side and now it's been alternating to the left and right side. According to ENT doctors, my ears are fine, no STREP... Told me I have TMJ and perhaps post-nasal drip.
Gave me Naproxen (muscle relaxer) and Nasonex... felt better, but once I stopped taking meds, 3 days later it was back to my right side. Painful swallowing, yawning, ear feels clogged/pressure.
Going to see an allergist next.

I find this amazing as i sit here and read all of these posts! I too have been sick for the last month with a double ear infection which one ruptured and Bronchitis (which i dont believe thats what it was i think i had mono because my friend just had mono) ... i took 2 presciptions of Chlarithromyacin (sp?) over a period of 20 days or so. I started to feel better last week and then my throat started hurting. It was only at night that it would happen, first on my right side and the pain i wouldn't say is unbareable but kind of annoying it hurts to swallow then pain in my jaw and up to my ear and also when i move my tongue whether it be eating, drinking or talking.
And now it is on my left side and doing the same thing, except today its hurting through out the day and it usually only happens at night!
Some one help! I see we all have had the same thing but no one really knows what it could be! I have a doctors appointment on friday with an ENT. Maybe he could tell me.

I had the same thing a couple months back so I went to the doctor, they thought that it was mabye strept throat but when they took a swab test they didnt know what it was, so they gave me antibiotics and it was eventually gone in a week.
I have the same thing after a couple months of having it, but know i have dizzyness and it hurts to look at light
It could be mono but see you doctor
get lots of sleep, drink lots of water and orange juice(vitamin C), take lots of vitamins and hopefully it goes away in a couple days

It's tonsillitis or worse - glandular fever.
I have the exact same symtoms you all have, and I went to my doctor and he told me it was acute tonsillitis or glandular fever.
I've been prescribed penicillin and I had a blood test today to see if it's tonsillitis or glandular fever. It's probably tonsillitis.
Anyway, you should all go to your doctors and if they say it's something else or they don't know, ask if it's tonsillitis or glandular fever.
Btw the penicillin dosen't help with the pain.

Have had a persistant pain just above the larynx on the left side for three weeks. Condition is exacerbated after a lot of talking. I have reason to believe it may be associated with oral thrush. I have been gargling with 50 percent hydrogen peroxide / 50 percent water for a few days - that kills just about everything. Seems a bit better now. I am now gargling with Tom's Natural Mouthwash with Baking Soda. Seems to be helping, has peppermint in it. Also taking Cod liver oil caps, vit. B12, C, (For A,B,C attack). Also taking Echcanacia (sp) caps. I am seeing slow improvement. Note, if it is Thrush, I can get a script for Nystatin (mycostatin oral syspension), but the thrush will also come right back once you stop it, many say. Also doing plain yogurt with Acidofollus (sp). Scraping tongue, salt water rinse / gargle. All this can be tough on the tongue, so be advised. Still have an issue, but it is slightly improved. I believe this starts as a persistant virus that sits in the sub-maxillary nodes and creates a lesion on the throat which is very slow and difficult to heal, perhaps encouraging yeast growth and thush to get established as well. FYI. Good Luck!

I really think you are on to something. I too have all the same issues that everyone has posted. It started years ago, with fatigure and tonsil stones. I saw an ENT at that time was told I had chronic sinusitus and post nasal drip. Surgery was the solution but my parents were fearful of putting under the knife so to speak. That was roughly 15 years ago. Then the problem would come and go about once a year. It came back a couple of years ago except a little different. No more tonsil stones, istead I felt like I had something on the left side of my throat. Now I get a stinging like pain about mid neck insde my throat and the pain resonates deep in my ear and in the bone behind my ear. I also feel pain when I touch that side of my neck with slight pressure. I feel no lumps other than englarged lymph nodes that came and went with the most recent sore throat. I have a new symptom that I beleive to be related and that is pain in my left clavicle upper rib cage. It may or not be related but it is what prompted me to seek medical attention yet again. I have already been prescribed amoxicilin and that didn't help other than to clear the throat infection my GP diagnosed. However, the soreness is still there. Hurts to swallow and talk sometimes. My GP believes I have inverted tonsils. That being the case, he said if my tonsils get infected or enlarged for any other reason, they would push against the nerves that would cause ear, neck, shoulder, and possible chest pain. I am going to see an ENT at the end of the month and hoping to get some answers. However, since no one else seems to have them, I'm already feeling a little defeated. I have been gargling with lysterine and although I am no doctor I do feel like this is related to some nasty virus that brings on infection and leaves behind some sort of lesion ; that would explain the stinging throat, painful tongue sensation. I am on a journey to try different methods and right now going to explore oral hygeine . Drinking lots of water, flossing religously after every meal, scrapping tongue, gargling with hydrogen peroxide, lysterine, and salt water, going to take all the vitamins listed above and also have a dentist appointment scheduled. I am going to see if any of these efforts make some sort of difference. Since tonsils are a line of defense and the mouth is a very dirty place it could be that our mouths need extra special attention so as not to perpetuate and also help get rid of whatever is attacking our throats. I will post my findings and progress and hopefully it can help somebody since no one else seems to post much on outcome or findings around here.
Good luck to everyone and hope you feel better soon becuase I know feeling this way really stinks!!

i would suggest trying some ibuprofen if you are able to take it. if you have HBP that is uncontrolled or stomach or kidney problems stay away from that. you can take 600-800mg three times a day. also you can try using throat lozenges. if this keeps up after a few days, try some cold/sinus medication if you can take those. if after about 10 days, go see your doctor, after that idk what to say if you still have trouble, look into clinical trials

Typically this would indicate an infection or inflammation of the pharynx and/or the eustachian tube. The eustachian tube is a canal about 35mm long that connects your inner ear to the back of your throat. This helps equalize pressure in the ear and assists drainage. When it gets irritated it typically manifests on one side and causes pain while swallowing since the tube opens and closes during that act. It can often occur after or during the common cold and usually isn't a big deal. It will probably go away on its own but if symptoms don't improve after a week or so, or if the pain is intense see a doctor.
