I had a left kidney removed a year ago, it had moved outside the kidney, into the vena cava, but then calcified, the Dr. said this was very unusual... I am a stage 3...
I have been admitted to the hospital emergency ward 3 times with agonizing pain... after surgery the nurse complained I was under-medicating, but three months later as I started to regain my health, the pain started and was brutal, I would sit and sob and want to die.... the Dr. put me on oxycodone ? but I protested and am on a low dose of hydrocodone... I take it two times a day, morning and evening..I hate it, it makes me limp,
and I have no will to carry through on things, although I am adjusting to it... I am determined to get off drugs.... . I also have painful swelling etc. on my left side... it is getting a little better after a year. I keep exploring alternatives, sometimes massaging with essential oils helps the discomfort/edema like symptoms... have had every test imaginable, x-rays, obgyn, colonoscopy, back mri, lungs, it seems to be an effect of the surgery... I have been exploring alternative medicine as well, as going to Chicago to the Block Center, (great book, Life Over Cancer, by Dr. Block led me there) they address, mind, body, spirit, emotions.. My odds were not great, but as Mrs. Block said at Chicago, You are not a statistic... I had my surgery at Brighams, and reiki treatments helped a lot while I was there... my room-mate died a month after leaving the hospital, of uterine cancer... I have been to a Reiki master Bridget Dinsmore in Cambridge, she is wonderful, and delt with her uterine cancer without surgery and radiation and chemo etc... so she was an inspiration in the face of my fear....massage with essential oils, a moist heating pad has been great help, I went to Tom Tam sessions, (based on accupressure, and visualization) I have used a far infared lamp, and just ordered a set of Dinshah color filters, for light treatments, I also am taking a lot of supplements, for this and to make sure the cancer does not bloom elsewhere, I have met too many people who said, I was fine and then it came back... Daniel Reid has a wonderful book on Chinese medicine which has been very helpfrul, and I have adjusted my diet... . I am 68 and find it is hard to make big consistent changes, so its Kai Zen, baby steps so to speak.... with a full life of family , friends, work,
and some unfinished business of my own interests, its like trying to turn an ocean liner around to make changes in my outer life to match the profound inner changes I am undergoing... To face the fear and the pain I stormed heaven with prayers and told myself and tell myself,
there will be gifts as well as struggle... Mrs. Block said, visualize 3 times a day for 10 minutes, your perfect life in one year, in the morning, your perfect life in three years, at lunch, and your perfect year in five years at night... I also have a vision chart of my 70th, 80th and 90th birthday parties... Leave no stone un=turned. Focus on love and fun as much as possible... I have two labs, and a sweet grand-son and loving husband, sons, and sister and daughter-in-law, and dear friends so that helps... Loving best wishes, to all... Sukie

Hello,
While I'm relieved to find I'm not alone with this particular issue, I'm sorry to see so many others also dealing with this. I had a total left nephrectomy done in September 2009. Mine was an odd thing, no RCC or anything like that. It was the second surgery in 9 days and my ureter had basically disintegrated and my kidney function had gone kaput. I was having pain for two months before my surgery and now it's March 2010 and I still have pain - more pain.

I started going to a Pain Management specialist and he said he has a few other patients that he sees due to what they call "post-nephrectomy syndrome." I've been taking Neurontin 1200mg 3x/day plus Opana ER and Oxycodone for breakthrough pain. I've also started neuropsych appointments for the related depression. My doctor is also doing inter-costal nerve block treatments.

What I was told is that what is happening is unfortunately not out of the ordinary. The body is healing and so scar tissue and adhesions may be forming and this particular scar is not an easy healer. As the body heals, it is squeezing those nerves.

I highly recommend getting into a pain management specialist if you can. While I still am in a lot of pain, I at least have doctors who validate how I feel and keep trying new things. They also know all the medicines to treat nerve pain better than our PCPs do in my humble opinion.

I keep a heating pad at my desk and use it frequently and have one on the couch when I'm home. I find heat helps a bit.

I wish everyone well and hope my experience might be able to help someone else.

I also had my kidney removed by hand assisted laproscopic surgery 7 yrs. ago. I also have a large bump on my stomach where the incision is. I had a scan and it appears to be a hernia. Dr. said if it doesn't bother it just leave it alone. I also had renal cell carcinoma and I find it confusing when to be concerned. As soon as I tell my primary care Dr. they want to do scans. At what point to we need to be concerned?

It makes me feel like I am not alone. I had my left kidney removed June 1, 2010, it was renal cell carcinoma, and after the operation a month and half later, there is pain ! The pain on my right side and across my back, and it comes at night. I have a hard time lying down and have to take something for the pain just to try and sleep. Have been to see my specialist and doctor, and at least 3 other doctors and they all say it is the operation. It takes time......so I am wondering how many out there have some information as to how long this could last. I am slated to return to work Sept 1st and with this pain I am not so sure I can return. Thanks for the comments and charing on this site.

I had a nephrectomy of my left kindney one year ago and I am still experiencing pain in my left abd and back. My doctor is aware and has given me lortab which I cannot tolerate. I would not even want to have to depend on pain meds one year after surgery I thought I would be cured after surgery. I am not. I have tried muscle relaxants b/c he thinks it muscular. I am at a loss , after reading a lot of these post I feel like residual pain is standard. My pain is worst with physical activity. My doc has suggested a steroid injection at the site of the pain. Has anyone had this done? The pain in mostly in my stomach its even painful when touched at times . It boggles my mind 8-|

I found this site so helpful, because i just had my right kidney removed (hand assisted laproscopic) two weeks ago and i cant stand the pain.  I cant sleep...its horrible.  If i laugh, cry, sneeze, cough..it hurts.  I can walk for about 30 minutes and then the pain where the incision is is so intense im doubled over.  I also have a lot of pain in my back.  I worked out 5-6 days a week before this surgery and i cant stand feeling this way.  I go to the dr this week for my follow up, but all i keep getting is.."its normal".  Does it get any better and what the heck is hurting so bad?  Im afraid my left kidney is struggling to work, but its probably all in my mind.  I just want the pain to go away, also to be able to stand up straight!

On Feb. 1st of 2011 i donated my left kidney to my brother...its been 6wks and i am now experiencing pain on the right side of my stomach. it is not the incision, and the pain has been with me for 3 days and is constant. Anyone experience this before? I really hate contacting my Dr if its something that is normal.
