After reading these post I feel very lucky. I too had my right kidney removed in 2010. I still have numbness around the scar but usually no pain. Occassionally I will have slight pain in the kidney area where the kidney should be but nothing that I have to have meds for. I spent 4 and 1/2 days in the hospital. Was allowed to eat liquid foods after the 3rd day and solids on the 4th. No pain meds were needed after they took out the epidural on the night of the 3rd day. I only had to use pain meds when I got home peroidcally. I did however have to sleep inclined for about a month. After the first month I was back to normal. I don't know if I have a great doctor or just the exception. I just know that 2 years later the only signs I have of ever having cancer and surgery is the scar left on my stomach.

You were only in there overnight? I can't believe that! I was in for 4 nights and the fourth was because I fell and split my ear open going to the bathroom. So they kept me an extra night. I do have to say I needed every bit of the time in the hospital and almost feel I could have stayed a little longer but hospitals want you out as fast as they can get you out. I would absolutely call you doctor. Especially is you are experiencing pain with urination.

Hi All

I was an overnighter as well, only last week i had left nephrectomy and biopsy to bladder to see if cancer present there.. But its the dull ache pain in the same place as the kidney was and where for all my life i had pain (37 years)  that is bothersome? the bloated left side and scar pain is ok cause i feel able to cope with that, will be seeing my consultant in 3 weeks for follow up and will def mention the internal pain then.

I too had my right kidney removed on Aug 24. I have trouble sleeping at night on my back and cannot sleep on either side so I have I have to alternate from sitting up to sleeping on my back, I use a pillo under my knees to help alleviate the ache in my back but its now Oct 1 and still having trouble sleeping on my back so not getting good sleep. I take a quarter of a whole tramadol once in am and once in pm to help keep the edge of discomfort at bay. I walk, stretch but have issues while sitting. I feel like my ribs are broke and poking out my side my small incisions are healing well but are itchy, but its my back aches that I hope will go away soon. I guess my other organs are saying wheres Waldo? as they have to adjust to an empty spot. I know its a major surgery, but feel hopeful it will get better. I feel bad for those who are experiencing real bad pain and lumps by their incision. My prayers to all for a speedy recovery .

I'm 84 and had the left kidney removed 65 years ago. Pain to the left of the spine is getting worse... like a bad bruise...
pain pills do not help. Might the absence of the kidney have anything to do with the pain? Might the "void" and changes of weather have anything to do with the pain?

I had my left removed about a year ago and my pain is getting worse and my doctor told me that there is nothing else he can do for me . I feel like something is either in there or out of place.

Hi, I too had my left kidney removed over a month ago and it was done through Key hole surgery. I had to be in hospital for 3 days post surgery and now, i don't feel any pain unless when i walk a little longer distance or if i get heavy jerk while driving.

There are lots of people who have had nephrectomies and still seem to have pain for several months of years after the surgery. This is reassuring to know I'm not the only one but disheartening to think that it's normal" and the pain may continue for sometime!

I had a partial Nephrectomy just over 5 months ago to remove a stage 1 grade 2 RCC. They used an open procedure so I had a 12inch incision and they cut through 4 layers of muscles. I still have pain in my back (kidney area) and abdomen (just below my ribs) and I have a large numb area in my lower abdomen.

i keep telling myself that at least the cancer has gone and I should be happy it was found early but the chance of recurrence is always on my mind. The pain in my kidney only causes me to worry more about the cancer coming back. Does anyone else worry about it returning either in the same kidney or anywhere else or has anyone been unlucky enough for this to actually happen?

i joined a cancer forum (wasn't sure if I was classified as a cancer patient or a cancer survivor as they told me I had cancer and that it was now gone all in the same sentence) and even though I didn't get much help or advice about renal cancer I did hear some shocking stories from people with "real" cancer and again I realise I should be thankful my cancer has gone and stop winging about a bit of pain!!!

you are the only other person i have heard talk about the lump on the stomache. I also have the back pain. This is an old site but to let you know i had renal cell carcinoma. the dr told me to get a massage for the paiin. Didnt help! My bump was not a hernia. They say theuy dont know what it is.
