I get cramps very easy above the incision on my right side if I turn or twist very hard, and if i stretch my side. I thought I had a hernia there but the dr said no and wanted to give me shots there, ugh I said no. I also take tramadol 1 a day to manage the pain, but the pain is always there and now after 6 years is something I'll have to live with the rest of my life. Not good but it beats the alternative..... just wish there was a better pain medication as i have built up an immunity to the tramadol and unless i take more than 1 it really doesn't do much does anyone else have any recommendations?

The above post by Pat dalgleish is correct, the pain everyone is feeling is nerve damage from the operation.  I too, had a kidney and ureter (left) nephroureterctomy.  They also took pc of my bladder.  There is a lot of nerves running through the area they had to cut through.  A large muscle also needed to be cut through and that takes forever to heal. Picture a thick steak being cut and trying to grow back together.  Healing takes a long time, as this is a huge operation.  If you feel burning or pulling pain near the incisions, go to the hospital, this is a sign of infection and can be VERY serious!  I don't know if the nerve damage ever heals, lets hope so!  My surgery was on May 27th, 2013 and I have been to hospital twice since and am learning more and more everyday.  A lot of people will get hooked on pain killers, I hope people think twice before doing this.  Good Luck everyone, with your recovery!

This is about my mother.
My mother is suffering knee pain from past 2 years and last two weeks back she get the stomach pain (left side ), immediately we met the doctor and he did some tests and finalized my mother is having non-function kidney(left) and did the surgery and removed the kidney and sent for biopsy, the final outcome is cancer.
The strange thing is: we took several blood tests and all are Normal and even no symptoms.
Immediately we met the cancer doctor and suggested taking the PET/CT Scan, and the final outcome is stage 3 cancer with tumor size SUV 13.
Then we took the 2nd opinion (Doctor) and he said the PET/CT Scan which we took is not correct, as it is not suggested immediate post operation as you should wait at least 6week to take the pet/ct scan after surgery, then only you can get the accurate result and asked to wait for 6weeks to take the PET/CT Scan again, So are waiting for another 3 weeks to do the pet/ct scan again.

Please suggest me if any one faced similar problem, Thanks in advance.

Yes this is very similar to me. However my tumor was only 5cm diameter. What is SUV 13? Your mom needs to ask for a copy of the path report, following her surgery. They would have/or will dissect everything and be able to tell if it invaded her lymphnodes, that is the big question!!! What exactly are they doing a CT Scan on, the other kidney and organs? They want you to wait 6 weeks to see if any more grows. A lot of kidney cancers do not have any real noticeable symptoms, but she likely had blood in her urine and suffered fatique. A LOT Of people live long lives after kidney cancer. You are very worried, obviously, but try to get your hands on the path report and look at the final outcome. Send it here and I bet you, you will have a lot of support. Good luck and we all hope the best for your mom!

I see this has been a while since you posted. Are you still having this problem? I had this surgery done almost a year and half ago and still hurting. Just wondering if they ever found out anything or if you were still having trouble.

I have two kidney surgery's one partial nephrectomy open surgery then a radical nephrectomy keyhole two years later l am still in pain cant run anymore walk heaps but feel every step. I was scanned for adhesions showed nothing still have swelling on left side where surgery was and feel pain all the time. Numbness is to be expected nerve endings do weird things and heal in their own time (if i scratch my back i feel it in my front). Recently I went to a gastroenterologist and told him i thought i had adhesions to the lower bowel after surgery he agreed and is procceeding with mri and cameras to figure it out. No doctor wants to admit they have made a mistake and if i didnt have the surgery I would be very sick still but I think keyhole was NOT a good way to go they went in without scanning for my kidney it had moved south since the last surgery and adhered to the abdominal cavity it took 6hrs and more insicions  to get out instead of 3hrs. I cant help thinking I would rather a big old scar like the one i have than the smaller scars that lie on a sore swollen tummy. CT scans showed my kidney looking fine fat and healthy when they opened me up it was a necrotic kidney with a big fat cyst so dont trust the scans question your surgeons and ask to see your files because they dont tell you everything. Its YOUR body not theirs so dont be intimidated. Dont have expectations they can fix it either, its in your interests to Stay Healthy Drink Water Eat Well and Dont Get Fat because one Kidney is better than none.

Tramadol is a highly addictive pain relief that causes depression and anxiety aside from the other side effects. Ive used feldene (piroxicam) which helped I was on tramadol for years then endone (oxycontin) which kills the pain but again highly addictive. The feldene works in a different way my urologist recommended it has helped

I had my kidney removed November 17 2009 for renal carcinoma. My side is still swelled tender and painful to this day. They say I need reconstructive surgery but the problem is no doctor wants to take on the risk of opening me up again.

I had my left kidney removed Jan. 30, 2014, and I still experience pain at the surgery site. So I feel for you. Saw my primary doctor, and she had no answers. If I push in on the surgery site, it feels better, but I can't function while pushing on my abdomen. No one told me this would happen.

I have the same problem, I had robotic surgery 12 days ago to remove a cancerous tumor, they only removed part of my kidney and I felt fine the first 7 days. I was only in the hospital 3 days.I have since been in the hospital for the past 3 days suffering from extreme backache when I stand or walk. I was told in the emergency room that I had a large hematoma on my kidney after a CT Scan. My surgeon told me he believes it is muscular or my siatica . No one knows for sure, still in pain.
