I recently had right shoulder arthoscopy, bicep tenodesis, and rotator cuff repair. I find sleep to be difficult and at times in my sleep, I feel my shoulder jerk. Once that happens the pain is overwhelming. I sometimes feel like I have pulled something. Is it normal

I am a 64 year old woman and had the surgery almost 8 weeks ago. You have to learn to breathe during the pain when stretching and your body will tell you when you have had enough.Take the stretch until you cannot bear it. The passive exercises stretch your tendons and get your ready for weight bearing. It is one of the most painful surgeries and recoveries, but you have to do the rehab, no matter how bad it hurts! I am finally seeing some progress. They say 6 months to a year. I have 4 screws and anchors and I lost part of my bicep muscle. Good luck everyone!

Glad to see I'm not crazy. I'm at 8 weeks and doing great per PT on passive movement but horrible per MD on active movement. I cannot move arm above head without assistance. He wants to do another MRI. Funny thing is they work at the same Ortho placebut disagree on progress. So, not sure who to trust and reading these posts there is no right or wrong at 8 weeks. MD thinks I pushed it too hard at PT and pulled anchors out. Sometimes life just sucks.

I am 9 weeks and 2 days post op. This surgery is very painful and the rehab is so important to work through. Throbbing pain is just your muscles, ligaments, and tendons waking up after surgery. Your range of motion the first 8 weeks is of upmost importance. You have to breathe and work through the pain. If it is a sharp, stabbing or shooting pain, then you may have issues. You do not get your sleep with this surgery and rehab. I still sleep sitting up. I bought a platform for my bed to be able to adjust the head as I was getting no sleep. You cannot heal without sleep! I am now at a place where there are more good days than bad days and I am excited to have my life back & can finally see some real progress. I have 5 screws and anchors and lost part of my bicep muscle. I know I will recover if I do my part. I do the rehab with the therapist 2x a week and I also do it at home 2 times a day. The surgery is just the beginning of this challenging journey. I wish you all a healthy recovery with lots of endurance to make it through!

I'm almost three months post-op rotator cuff repair with bone spur debridement. I've been having increased pain for about the past 3-4 weeks so went back to the doctor. He sent me for a repeat MRI which showed the anchor was backing out a few millimeters. The pain, however, was primarily at the bony clean up area but now it seems to have moved. They are hoping, as am I of course, we don't have to completely redo the repair, which would involve open rotator cuff surgery. Be sure you follow up with your doctor bc this can get out of hand quick I'm learning. Best of luck!

You're a freak of nature then! No way you are just a week out and on no medications for pain!

Please don't say old people are the worst. I am a not-so-old 72, and I can't tell you how sympathetic I am to all these people posting comments. I am five weeks out and for the last three days the pain has been as bad or worse than it was the first two days. I'm hoping not to die off anytime soon, and I promise I won't pretend anyone's pain isn't real.

I am a 67 yr old retired mail carrier. I had my right rotator cuff repaired 8 weeks ago on 2-12-2018I also had a bicep tendon rupture which was too far gone to repair. I hesitated to do this surgery for 5 yrs knowing how tough it all would be but my tear accelarated during that time and i had to. Spent 6 weeks in sling and go to PT twice a week in addition to doing home exercises 5 times a day.my first PT was 4 days after surgery and brought tears to my eyes and i consider myself a tough dude. The weeks following also were excruciating in PT but was told necessary for tissue expansion. I can now drive, brush my teeth, comb my hair, shave, wash my hair, put my contacs in,cut meat. So making progress. But still have shoulder and elbow pain almost constantly although at a lower level than befor. The elbow pain concerns me but they tell me its going to go away. Im not so sure and they sometimes laser it. It might be something to check out further. Everyones experiences here seem to be the same and some very different. For instance why didnt everyone start PT right away? Also i slept in my bed with a couch back cushion behind me supported by pillows at a 45 angle with sling on for 6 weeks. Meds mostly knocked me out back then. Now im sleeping flat no sling supporting my right arm with a pillow out about a little lower than shoulder . Feel pain at night toss and turn, of course cant sleep on affected side even though i want to. Only take a tylenol here and there now and a sleep med to get me through. The opiod RX is long gone and doc says no more. This is a long road for all. I thought i would be able to do some spring chores like cutting lawn and small stuff but it aint happening. Ill just follow the course and make small progresses. I can move my shoulder lying down backwards to 160 degrees...almost flat doing the cane exercise. Hang in there everyone. I dont wish this surgery and recovery on anyone but stay the course, get good PT, dont do anything stupid and hopefully in a year we will all feel better. God Bless you all and if you need advice or support im here for you....contact me or reply.my names Paul or Pauly T.
