I had the same problem as everyone else here. Not sure if anyone is still checking this thread, but since nobody offered any advice I thought I would. First the pill Pyridium is awesome. It's small, it's over-the-counter at CVS, and it works fast to completely numb your bladder. Next, cranberry juice (don't buy the stuff with sugar although in a crunch it will do) works well if you're out of Peridium though you have to give it time to work through your bladder. Of course the above is just for the pain, not the underlying problem.

Here were my symptoms: Painful urination after about every third or fourth sexual intercourse (sometimes not right away, but a day or two later) constantly feeling like I had to go to the bathroom even when I didn't, and waking up to go to the bathroom- annoying. Also, just a general ickyness that happened everytime I had time sex. I went to some quack gynos who told me to stop eating spicy food and drink more water- water is all I drink anyway. The last gyno I went to asked me a few questions and said it sounded as if I had a small tear in bladder, a cyst, or irritated ureatha. Any of these things she said, could be fixed with a simple surgery after proper imaging and checking. I honestly felt like a fool for going back to the same stupid gynos again and again after her diagnosis. If you're going to someone who doesn't immediately bring this up, and they keep giving you antibiotics even when you are not actually testing positive for UTI's (there was never any bacteria present with me but they kept giving me antibiotics anyway), switch to a new gyno. Also you should know, I later discovered that I also had a latex allergy (super fun) which was exaserbating my symtoms. Of course as always with any sex symtoms get tested for STD's too just to be safe.

TO the last poster- spicy foods DO exacerbate the problem for some people. (Does for me).  For many, the syptoms here are likely from Interstitial Cystitis, which some doctors describe as something like Irritable Bowel syndrom, but (obviously) for the bladder.

Many things can cause irritation and the symptoms you describe, and they vary from person to person. But spicy foods, alcohol and acidic foods are all pretty common irritants for this problem.

Forgot to mention- read the box! That med does help, but 1) it's NOT recommended for long term use (has shown to cause problems in lab animals AND there have not been ANY long-term studies in humans!) and 2), it seems to lose its effectiveness with repeated use. I started taking that stuff a few months ago. It seemed to become less effective with each subsequent use.

THere are prescription drugs available that supposedly both help reduce the pain/irritation and may actually help heal the problem (along with a special diet) over time.  Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't cover that med. I was supposed to get a test done, but didn't go b/c I was afraid of the catheter :(

Still, if you really have bad symptoms, and insurance, you might see a uro-gynocologist or find a really good gynocologist that knows about this problem.

heyya girls (assuming  but i think I'm right that you're all female like me)
So. I've had the same problem since I was 5/6ish. Im 16 now and well used to it. Its still so horrible and leaves me in tears as well as interfering with life in general. Try sitting you exams with a uretha that feels like a gapping wound and a constant urge to pee-It's rather difficult. hahah.

basically it burns and hurts whenever I wee, and irritates alot. I get 'attacks' about once a month (sometimes more sometimes less) and have since I was little. Sometimes they last a day..others-like now-last a week and 4 days. (and counting). It's really horrible. When i was younger I got told it was cold on my tummy, and had to sleep with hot water bottles every night for about a year. I still try this methodthough i'm unsure if it helps or It goes away itself. Sometimes it doesnt work... I got an ultrasound when I was 6 and the doctor couldn't tell me what it was...only thing was that my spleen seemed inflamed but they didn't think it was anything to worry about. Over the years figuring  I'd just get told the same thing, no matter how much it hurt I hadn't been taken back to the doctors much about it and every time it came along i was bed ridden (or bath ridden as being immersed in water seems to make it less painful) with ural and a hot water bottle, sometimes I had urine cultures done but to no effect.... until last year. Last year they thought my kidney would explode it hurt that much so i was taken to the doctors and CT scanned. again I only got stuck with 'enlarged spleen'. I also had to have blood tests (they tested me for chlymidia even though i wasn't sexual active? O.o) and nothing in them except for high red blood cells. I also have had MANY urine cultures over the years but no results.

It feels.. like hell. It hurts so much and even walking around/sitting down makes me want to cry. its like there is a massive weight on my bladder and (although a little disgusting and grotesque) Like the walls of my uretha are crawling directly after the excrutiating stinging that is urinating. I also constantly have too 'push' and strain my tummy, which im retty sure is going to cause a muscle tear if I keep it up but i honestly can't help it.
So can you help me? Surely someone must have been told an answer..help me out! I really hate this.
Even if you can suggest some tests to reccomend to my doctor? It'd be appreciated.

meggan.

Hi ladies and especially lcl10.

I have been suffering with uti, urethra pain, yeast and bv infections for the past 3 years. I seriously can take it anymore. Im obsess in finding a cure. Im a 26 years old woman who just recently got married. I have been in a relationship with the same guy for 4 years and our lack of sex is starting to interfere with our relationship. Im afraid to have sex because i know im gonna get uti and following to an yeast or bv infection. I have researched all kinds of preventative measures to stop any re-occurrence but nothing works 100 %. Df probiotics works but they are very expensive i get them at whole food and they are called ultime vaginal flora 50 billions strains. I also try cranberry pills but just today i start thinking that the absentness of sex has a lot to do with recurrence UTI. That’s why after reading lcl10 post  I have decided to try to have sex at least 2 times a week. The reason why I came with this conclusion is because before I started dating my husband I just date a guy who I usually had sex with at least 3 times a week and I never got a UTI ever. Besides all the reasons of more sex makes your urethra less sensible and I want to add the fact that sex definitely boost your immune system. This makes your body stronger and fights any infection better. Right now Im facing a really bad UTI to the point where I urinated blood and im so afraid to go to the bathroom. I have been prescribed  Nitrofurantoing for 3 days twice a week and im so afraid that the treatment fails because I think I never had such bad uti before.  Ladies I will you if increasing my sex life changes my UTI recurrence and I will let you know.

Ladies, I was getting bladder infections EVERY time my husband and I had sex.  A friend of mine recommended Solaray (which is a brand name) Multidophilus pills which you purchase at a health food store.  They need to stay refrigerated.  I took 2 every morning.  Within 2 weeks, my bladder infections stopped occurring and I never got another one for 3 years.  Unfortunately, we moved and I got out of the habit of taking them and now my bladder infections have returned with a vengance.  I am on my way to the store tomorrow to start my regime all over again.  The pills are live good bacteria which eat the bad bacteria in your body.  When you start taking them, you may feel a burning sensation at first (in my case it was yeast being broken down, I'm guessing) and within 3 days you should feel a difference.  I hope it works!!!!

Jenn! That's so interesting as I've had a chronic yeast infection for years. It gets so much worse after drinking alcohol or having sex. The UTI symptoms started after trying various remedies for the yeast problem. But a few weeks ago I started using femdophilus, another refrigerated probiotic, and I've noticed that even after drinking (when I would usually have a lot of burning and pain- UTI -like symptoms) I have NOT had the pain. I haven't had sex since starting the femdophilus, but will certainly be interested in seeing if it helps.  I had just recently read that some people find relief for more than just yeast problems when using acidophilus. I hope this is a permanent improvement!

I'm telling you, no more yeast infections, no more bladder infections after sex, no more pain and swelling.  It's like it eats all bad bacteria so there's nothing to cause any more infections.  I'll be anxious to hear if this helps you too.  They really did change my life!!!

I am a female who has been suffering with painful urination and that horrible feeling of having to go all the time. I have been through all the test listed above. MRI, CT SCAN, CYSTOSCOPE, IVP ECT. I have been using over the counter azo standard to keep most of the symptoms down but was hoping someone had a solution to the pain. I have more symptoms of something else the doctors can not fix or know what it is. I have been on Mobic for pain in the rest of my body which seemed to help my urinary problems to a point. But we are trying to get pregant and that is not an option during pregnancy. So I am looking to see if anyone had a gentle option to control the pain. I have not been drinking soft drinks in over 10 years now because of severe kidney infections when I was a teenager.. They were not started by a bladder infection and I never had symptoms like these till after my last infection about 13 years ago. I went through several years of bactrim 6 months at a time which never cured my problems. Then they put me on detrol for over active bladder. This I guess helped.. I not sure only took it with azo which with just that I get releif.. Problem is now they have changed the formula or something and my stomach muscles react violently to it now. Just severe cramps in lower abdomen. Might be bladder not sure. Any help?

Mindy, have you tried a probiotic such as a Multidophilus or acidophilus?  Like I said before, you can get them at a health food store and they do eat the bad bacteria in your body and they're 100% natural.  Check with your doctor but I don't think they would interfere with a pregnancy.

I never have UTI and it doesn't hurt to pee BUT I have excruciating pain like there is a knife cutting me over and over again.  My doctor thought it was due to the multiple cysts on my ovaries, so out they both came last week.  I am still having the pain.  It starts to hurt when I walk and it gets worse by the minute.  I have tried all sorts of topical creams, A&D ointment, they even had me on antibiotics... nothing has helped.  This has been going on for over a year now.  I miss out on doing so many things with my family because I can't keep up with them.  i have to sit every couple of minutes.  I am in so much pain.  Docs have tested me for UTI's, Yeast infections, etc... NOTHING>  What can I do to take the pain away and have a normal life again??

I have been having the exact same problem with the pain and have been to doctor after doctor with no diagnosis. However, one doctor suggested trying an over the counter medicine call Prelief. It doens't cure what I am experiencing but it definately helps. Give it a try. It is call Prelief and is located in that antacid section. It is made from the same company as Beano.

I have been experiencing all the same symptoms as most of you after a really bad UTI and two weeks of antibiotics. It has been 5 months and my tests continue to come back clean and my current urologist can not seem to find anything wrong with me. After months of dealing with this annoying pain during urination and the spasms that occur afterwards, i decided to talk to a naturalpath who immediately said i needed to start a regiment of probiotics. I was hesitant at first but it has been 3 days and i feel better already. The spasms have almost completely stopped and the pain when urinating has lessened dramatically and I would like to think it will continue to. I do believe that too much bad bacteria is causing the problem. My doctor said there was no issues taking probiotics but didn't seem to think they would do much. He was wrong. I am taking a the Seroyal HMF brand. I hope this helps any other women who are frustrated by this same problem.
