Hey guest taking probiotics- read the earlier posts re: acidophilus. I started taking femdophilus for yeast infections a few months ago and not only did it pretty much take care of the GERD symptoms I was having (I took all kinds of antacid/PPI drugs for years), but it also seems to have greatly alleviated the bladder pain stuff.  I haven't had sex since starting the acidophilus (er, single right now), so don't know how that'll go, but for the most part I've not had bad bladder stuff. Just a little right before my period OR if I drink alot of alcohol. I had NO idea the acidophilus could help this and only realized it after a month or so of taking the stuff.
Glad you also have found it to help!

I wanted to add my 2 cents in on this... I found it odd when this started happening to me years ago and I have learned how to deal with it now... I have not been taking any medicine but I found out it is certain things that you drink or eat that affect you.  I have stopped drinking Tea as it has antioxidants that seem to bother me. I found this out because I was taking Coenzyme Q10 and it would make me sick feeling and make it hard to urinate.  I stopped taking it and started to feel better and had more energy.  I started reading what it was for and noticed it had antioxidants in it, so I decided to try and process of elimination and said I am going to cut out all the stuff that has antioxidants in it.  So I stopped drinking tea and a few other drinks and noticed it hurt less and less to pee, then after 2 weeks it stopped hurting all together.  Its so weird that this caused my issue and hope maybe it can help you.  Sorry for the run on sentences but I am in a hurry!!!!

Maybe someone has already suggested this (I only really read the first page of posts. But I had the same problem as described in the first posts which I believe was caused either by anxiety/stress or a fungal infection.

I accidentaly took an overdose of antibiotics for a uti and was concerned that it would become resitant to the antibiotics when I was prescribed more. I had the symptoms so it appeared my uti hadn't disappeared despite the 2nd course of antibiotics, but tests showed it had.

Anyway. My doc suggested maybe it was a fungal infection (due to the antibiotics) which was causing inflamation of the urethra. I didn't have noticable vaginal discomfort (perhaps very slight) but not the usual symptoms associated with thrush, but after taking one little pill for the fungal infection the symptoms disappeared.

So if anybody is still unsure as to the cause, perhaps fungal infection/stress could be it.

What about....

Interstitial cystitis (in-tur-STISH-ul sis-TI-tis) is a chronic condition characterized by a combination of uncomfortable bladder pressure, bladder pain and sometimes pain in your pelvis, which can range from mild burning or discomfort to severe pain.

While interstitial cystitis — also called painful bladder syndrome — can affect children and men, most of those affected are women. Interstitial cystitis can have a long-lasting adverse effect on your quality of life.

The severity of symptoms caused by interstitial cystitis often fluctuates, and some people may experience periods of remission. Although there's no treatment that reliably eliminates interstitial cystitis, a variety of medications and other therapies offer relief.

Interstitial cystitis symptoms include:

Pain in your pelvis (suprapubic) or between the vagina and anus in women or between the scrotum and anus in men (perineal). Chronic pelvic pain. A persistent, urgent need to urinate. Frequent urination, often of small amounts, throughout the day and night. People with severe interstitial cystitis may urinate as often as 60 times a day. Pain during sexual intercourse.

Some people affected by interstitial cystitis experience only pain, and some experience pressure or discomfort along with frequent, urgent urination. Most affected people, however, experience both pain and frequent, urgent urination.

Although signs and symptoms of interstitial cystitis may resemble those of a chronic urinary tract infection, urine cultures are usually free of bacteria. However, a worsening of symptoms may occur if a person with interstitial cystitis gets a urinary tract infection

If someone has already thought of this I apologize I am just tryin to help and also figure out if that is what I have. :(

I think  many of us have already figured out IC is a likely diagnosis. However, having seen a few doctors about this (at least 2 urologists, one a specialist in gyno-urology), it's a bit upsetting to learn that there is no real "cure" for the problem. That said, I, like a few others here, have found that the use of pro-biotics has really helped a lot in reducing frequency and severity of symptoms.  I use femdophilus, which I initially started using for yeast problems. It took a month for me to realize that the bladder issues had greatly improved after starting on the supplement.
I still get problems, particularly before my period, but again, not as much.  Alcohol and some very acidic foods do seem to make it worse. Poor health in general also makes symptoms more obvious.  Interestingly, apple cider vinegar, which I use on salad, does not seem to make it worse (though it's obviously acidic.)
Anyway, I hope you find something that helps. i have not had a boyfriend since I discovered acidophilus helps the symptoms, so I can't say how much worse it'll get when I'm sexually active again, but I HOPE that it doesn't get anywhere near as bad as it did with my ex. (Which is when the problems started!)

I've had a quick look on here, because i suffer with exactly the same problem!!!! When i wake up first thing in the morning, or when i know i havnt drunk much that day, i have a horrible, uncomfortable burning feeling, both when i pee and afterwards too. I've suffered with cystitis a lot too, but the thing is, i know this sensation has nothing to do with cystitis, and i dont have a UTI because ive been tested and it came back clear. However, i think, maybe we're just making a mountain out of a molehill? ... Because, logically speaking, maybe its just our bodies natural way of telling us that we're dehydrated and need to drink more? After all, drinking is a basic but massively important thing we NEED to do regularly to survive right .. like eating .. and also, have you ever had that horrible, sick feeling when youre over-hungry, and you actually feel faint and like you might throw up?? .. Well im assuming you probably have, and i doubt youve ever gone to the doctors about it because its obvious how to cure it - just eat. So with the urine thing, maybe its just a case of, if you suffer from this, just drink lots.. and thats it. Also dont forget, concentrated urine can have a pH of around 4 .. which is pretty acidic when you consider that pH 1 is a very strong acid, and 7 is neutral ... so possibly its just the acidity of the strong urine which is irritating the uretha, but when we drink it goes because thats just what our body needed .....

This is allllll just a guess though. It would be lovely if im wrong, cos that would mean theres a treatment/ cure other than having to constantly drink, which is a pain in itself because having to pee lots is annoying!

Hi, I've recently been experiencing the worst symptoms I have had in months. And I'm not sure why, but fairly certain it's hormone-related.  In response to your hypothesis that it may be the body's way of telling us to drink more...perhaps for some, but I drink over a gallon of water every day. And that's not an exaggeration. I do exercise and sweat alot, much more than the average person, but still, I'm pretty sure dehydration is not my problem.  Further, though drinking more sometimes help alleviate the feeling that I need to urinate, lately it has not. It only increases the feeling that I need to go.  However, I'm not having burning when I urinate, or even a really strong feeling of bladder fullness, but rather it's more localized in the vaginal area. Again, I think my issue is particularly hormone related right now, as other things are going on, too.

Whatever the cause, and i imagine it varies by person.  But I hope to find a solution soon as it's really been a pain lately. Literally and figuratively.

Hey all -- glad to know I'm not crazy.

I'm an 18 year old female (not sexually active) and these symptoms all sound very familiar. I still have no idea what is causing them.
I have been prone to infections all of my life-- in particular, UTIs and throat infections. I was on antibiotics pretty frequently from the time I was a little kid until I was about 12 years old.
However, I have been experiencing puzzling, frustrating, and unbearable symptoms, such as that "crawling" feeling of the urethra, general irritation, urethral itchiness, and a constant (and I DO mean constant) urge to urinate since last Wednesday-- December 7th. I drink a ton of water (about 4 glasses) first thing in the morning and that does seem to help, if only a little. Forcing myself to urinate usually makes my eyes water a bit, and occasionally, if the flow is too quick, I will experience a sudden, sharp pain. But this seems to be the only thing that makes me feel better, even though it literally only lasts for a couple of seconds. As soon as I wash my hands and am out of the bathroom, I feel the same as I did before. It's not as bad as the first day I experience symptoms, though-- I was in so much pain that I couldn't even stand up. I didn't want to leave the toilet. But, other than that, it is not getting better.

I'm only posting these things here because this is part of a cycle that I experience for a few weeks several times a year.

I believe this began due to two things that have happened to me over the course of last year. About last March, I began to feel some discomfort and my symptoms, after a web search, seemed to indicate a yeast infection. I'm still not sure that it was a yeast infection-- I really think it was just irritation for whatever reason. I told my mom and she said she couldn't afford to take me to the doctor or buy a yeast infection treatment kit. So, after about three weeks of using an at-home remedy of apple cider vinegar, I felt a lot better and moved on with my life.

But more trouble started the beginning of my senior year of high school in August 2010. The very first week of high school-- bam-- BAD UTI. I've had several UTIs in high school, but that was one of two times my doctor told me that my bladder had the highest content of bacteria it could possibly harbor. But that was just the beginning. I took some antibiotics, but I missed a lot of school my senior year because I would get bad UTI type symptoms, but with immediate lab results yielding no infection. Like in December 2010, when I really, really though I had a UTI, but an emergency room visit revealed I had absolutely nothing wrong with me. Cultures taken following the visit revealed nothing either. I just kind of got used to suffering and figured this was something I would have to deal with for the rest of my life. Then, around Christmas of December 2010, I got a pretty bad UTI. I know for sure it was a UTI because of the blood in my urine and the constant pain, rather than irritation. My mom said she couldn't afford to take me to the doctor, so I spent that Christmas, and the next several weeks, in pain, on large doses of ibuprofen, and downing all of the cranberry juice and water I could hold. Around three weeks later, I felt better.

But, ever since then, I have experienced this irritation like this on and off. I spent my graduation trying not to focus on the irritation in my bladder and urethra. It pretty much sucks.

I know this is all made worse by stress-- the first week of my senior year was very stressful and, being at school, I didn't have the access to water that I'd had over the summer. And now I'm very stressed again. This is the last week of my college semester, and I'm pretty much freaking out. On top of finishing all of this work and studying for tests, I have to deal with this. What in the world is wrong with me?

Hey Cathygiomom:  those pills you're taking that turn your pee orange can cause stomach pain and upset. It says that on the warning label.  I get stomach pain from them, too.  You're not supposed to take those for very long, either- they will probably stop working to reduce the pain/irritation if you take them too often.

Seems many of us have these symptoms for various reasons. Mine seem hormone related and worsen when I'm sexually active. I haven't been having sex for months so don't know if it'll be worse again when (if!) I start seeing someone again.  I'm hoping it was more due to my ex bf.

Anyway, good luck with your Dr. appt. I hope you figure out what's going on and find some relief. If you do, please post here!

And I still recommend trying really good acidophilus pills. My symptoms generally haven't been so bad since I started taking femdophilus.

Ok, I know you had cysto scope what you need to have done is another cysto scope but have them do a bladder expansion, you could have an irritated bladder and that will not show up in urine test. ask your urologist about interstitial cystitis, if your urologist knows nothing of it call around till you find one that does. they'll put you under for this particular cysto scope, in the meantime go to a neurologist let them know what is going on they'll give you pain relievers and a sleep aid, if your having trouble sleeping. Also avoid anything carbonated, alcoholic and caffeinated, you should find that the symptoms lessen after a few days. Hope this helps, this is for both male and female.

I have the exact same problem. Burning urination. Have to stay on the toilet in pain. I pee a few drops and as soon as I get off the pain starts again. Been taking Ibuprofen which helps for a few hours. Got some morfine to sleep through the night, because I became exhausted. I had frequent uti's as a kid and all through my life, but lately cultures come back negative even though I am in pain. I have had a cystoscopy and a bladder distention. The urologist says it's not interstitial cystitis. He did see some signs of infection (redness) and I will have this for the rest of my life, he said. There is nothing more he can do for me. I think he's sure it's all in my head which it isn't. Now I started to develop a red rash on my body and what looks like an acne on my face. Next week I'm going to see a dermatologist in the hope that he can figure something out. I'm not sure if the rash is related to the urinary problems. Happy to hear from anybody who has figured this thing out.

Hey Dar a Luz,
Sorry about your problems. Seems odd the Dr. said it's not IC. What does he think it is?? Why would he say you'd have it rest of your life if he didn't even know what you have? I'd see another Dr. if I were you.

Have you tried making dietary changes?  It's not the same for everyone.  Salsa, pineapple, and other acidic things make it worse for me.  It's almost always more acute during PMS, and drinking alcohol also makes it hurt, sometimes for days afterwards.

And I keep repeating myself on here, but I swear taking femdophilus supplements have made a huge difference.  I started taking them for yeast infections, but after a few weeks of taking the pills I noticed the pee pain had greatly improved.  It's worth a try.  I imagine other good quality (refrigerated!) acidophilus supplements could help.

Good luck and please update!

Hi there. Did u ever figure out what was wrong? Im 18 yrs old too and I'm having the same problem. I got a bad UTI and obtained a prescription over the phone for it from my doctor. After three days of taking the antibiotics, I was still having a burning sensation in my urethra. So I went into see my doctor the next day. They took a urine test...only resulting in finding a trace of blood in my pee. They decided to run a culture on my urine and now I'm just waiting for the results. My pain seems to only get really bad when I sit down and/or while I'm wearing jeans. I don't have frequent urination. But I do have a hard time urinating a lot. Only a little comes out at a time. I am not sexually active (haven't been for over 4 yrs). I don't believe that it could be an STD. What's wrong with me :(
