I have degenrative joint disease--a fancy name for severe arthritis--and have had my right knee replaced and revised three times and the left one, four times. About a year ago, I had so much pain in my left hip that I got out of bed one morning and found that I couldn't put any weight at all on it. I had that hip replaced, and have been so pain-free that it was just unbelievable. Now, I'm suddenly, over the last two weeks, having severe pain in my left buttock. I am so scared that I've done something to damage my new hip. Recently, i fell, with my weight on my right knee and left hand. Then, I carried in some wood for my fireplace and shortly after that, the pain started. Advil helps, but at the end of the day, if I sit down for any length of time, I am in incredible pain when I try to get up. I am scared to go to the doctor. I just can't go through any more surgeries. I'm at my wits end. I don't know if it was the fall or the lifting, or if it's just a coincidence. I had my first knee replacement when I was 48 and I just turned 60. Does anyone have any insight into this? Are there exercises that have helped any of you? I am desperate!

I had my left hip replaced July 2013, I have had muscle pain and chronic cramps in my right buttocks ever since. I am a bus driver and had to go back to work after 6 weeks so not to loose my job. I keep thinking it is going to get better but it has only gotten worse. As everyone is saying at times it makes you want to cry. I can not take pain pills because of my job, I have tried 800mg Ibuprofen use it 3 times a day and now I have added Bayer Back and Body, just barely getting by. My hip had gone completely out so I had no choice but to have it replaced, but this pain is so intense worse then losing my hip. Any advise would be helpful

Hi annbilly, I too had a THR of right hip end Jan this year '14. I tripped two weeks ago & am now suffering pain in my right buttock but it's mainly on the sit bone, so have written asking for help on this site too. I am not a Dr but have some experience in anatomy & know the gluteus holds a lot of tightness. I have had pain like you in the gluteus and managed it by sitting on a tennis ball. There are several pressure points around the body-one being deep in this area. If you can massage it by sitting on the ball, this could help by releasing a tightened muscle. However, please don't rule out other reasons as it could be a sciatic nerve problem for example. Tricia

I feel for you, been going through the same thing, had a total hip replacement in 2006,nothing but pain from the very beginning, the whole leg. Had xrays, mri & everything else you can think of,even the recall call of bad parts which i thought for sure was my problem, seen a different ortho doc,he said I did not have the bad parts. SO since 2006 I have been going to a pain clinic & living on pain pills,I hate them, even on pain patch now. As much pain meds that I have had you would think the pain would be gone,NOPE,nothing helps, I finally gave up & said I guess I live in pain the rest of my life. It's so hard getting around & doing any kind of walking,I do what i can then suffer the next day or two for it. On top of this,2 months ago I fell out the front door & now have a pubic fracture. One thing after another,a lot of pain from the fall, thought for sure i damaged the replacement parts but wasn't that, now i have to see a ortho doc for the fracture, that's how i found your post, surfing for answers on the pubic fracture. There is a lot of butt muscle pain, pain down the scare from replacement & in the crease on top of the leg, this pain is awful. Anyway just meant to tell you I'm going through the same from a hip replacement as you. Good Luck,if you find anything new that helps with the pain, let me know.

Your condition sounds very familiar. They are all stumped with me as well. Now, I am going to pelvic floor PT, along with regular core strengthening PT and hope for the best. I can't sit or stand without severe pain and swelling. I will let you know if the PT helps. I am having my fourth hip injection tomorrow. Not one has helped so far. SI joint injection, Bursa injection and 3 hip joint injections. My hip scope was one year ago. They want me to meditate and I do think it helps somewhat. My pain is in the same location as well as the groin and lateral hip and posterior thigh.

I am having the same issue, only I had hip scope surgery, not a replacement. Pain at the sight of the surgery that is so bad and can't sit long, can't stand long. Too much pain. Just had my fourth hip joint injection. I try and hold hope but pain changes a person! Trish

I'm really anxious to hear how you made out. I too had my hip replaced and 8-9 weeks after I got a terrible pain in my butt. I can't walk more than 100 steps without stopping and sitting. I too have had so many injections in my back but none have helped. My orotho doctor keeps telling me it's not my hip.

Hello, I'm Janet and in reading your post there are similarities that I've also experienced. I broke my right hip from a fall 3 years ago. It was pinned and a plate put in for 1 year doctor watched it break down because the ball at joint broke. Then went through total hip replacement of right hip and healed good but during that time my left buttocks had several episodes of severe pain and was told sciatica. Leg got weak and walking any distance difficult along with toes going numb. Was told more or less live with it. Two years now and no improvement doctor thinks it not sciatica and sening me for EMG and nerve conduction test. Just wonder if this will result into anything or not. I am so disheartened because after everything with hip thought I would be as good as new and to have to deal with this is awful. You are the first person that has seemed to experience something similar so I'm interested if you find anything that helps or cures this.
