Try messaging the back of your neck (same side of the head as where the esophagus issue is). For me I noticed that there is a sore muscular spot on back of neck. Was told many years ago that pain is felt lower than where the pinched nerve actually is. Therefore I think this is a pinched nerve higher up in neck area and radiates the weird esophegal issue lower. Try massaging any painful spots in back of neck to try to release pinched nerve.

Irritation or pinching of the glossopharyngeal nerve.

I turned my neck yesterday and felt a pop near my esophagus, and now it's difficult to swallow. Did I just pull a muscle or what?

Same exact thing happens to me and I can't figure out why.

Hi, I’m also looking around for an explanation to a similar situation. In my case (or my interpretation) is that it feels like a trapped nerve in the throat, on my right side. I’ve had it happen sporadically for a while, maybe once a year on average, although the frequency is very variable, from random things (yawning, turning my head while looking down) and each time it eventually “unblocks”. Things that unblock it are for example a movement of the neck, massaging the place with my hand, or caughing! Sometimes none of them work, and it lasts for hours until I finally get to the right movement. Does that sound familiar? Really interested to hear of other experiences as so far I haven’t found any useful medical help.

Omg! This is exactly what happens to me! When it does, I try to make myself relax. I lay completely flat on my back with my neck/head in the resting position as well. Then I place my hand on the area where it’s at, slowly and gently massage it in a circular motion for a few seconds, then I slightly push it and it clicks back into place. It is an extremely painful condition and I’d also like to know what it is? It also causes residual pain in that area, sometimes for a short bit, but sometimes for a couple of days. The pain radiates into my throat if I try to swallow. It sends pain into my neck and into my head and chest sometimes too. It is very scary and extremely painful.
