Girls I'm 100% sure you have recto vaginal endometriosis. This is what I had and your symptoms sound just like mine. You need to see an endometriosis specialist, not just a regular gynaecologist and have EXCISION surgery not laser. You must have a MRI scan with pelvis dye (an ultrasound will NOT show endometriosis!). An MRI scan is unlikely to show endometriosis but its more likely they will see something. The only definitive way to know if you have it is through laparoscopy. For anyone reading this who has the same symptoms, this is not normal, painful gas and bms are not part of a normal cycle! If you are in the UK, check of the BGSE accredited endometriosis hospitals/centres. Good luck!
I have been experiencing this for the past couple years. The pain stops me dead in my tracks-takes my breath away. I’ve had an internal ultrasound to look for cysts. I’m scheduled for a colonoscopy, but I’m not sure if that will show anything. Maybe I should ask for a regular lower abdominal ultrasound?
I am 48 and have had this excruciating pain on and off for a while but recently it has gotten worse and more regular during my period. The pain gets so bad I can't sit or stand I have to lay down to take all pressure off my mid section. I had been checked for endometriosis when I was younger and did not have it. I have also had multiple colonoscopy's for other issues and all is clear. There has to be another explanation?? My gyn said some people just have painful periods but there is not way this is normal. My very worst contraction during child birth is how bad my pain can get and that has to be a sign of something going on that is not normal. Every time I've been checked my period is over and the pain has subsided so they see nothing. I don't know what to do or how to fix this but I can not go on with this amount of pain every month it actually exhausts me!!!

im sorry this is late but ill just tell you what i know... this same thing happens to me too.... and i read somewhere its because we use tampons... do you use tampons? because if you do, that could be the reason for the pain while defecating..
Sounds just like me & my sister's issue. We both had uterine fibroids. Its much more of a crowded and sensitive area during menstruation week for those in this situation...Not even constipated & it feels like a labor contraction when its only a bowel movement.
I had no idea this problem was so common. I have had this issue come up in the past year or so. I had ultrasound after ultrasound because or painful cramps and heavy bleeding and they never found anything. A couple of months ago I had an abnormal precancerous cells on my cervix and the option for a hysterectomy came up. I was hesitant at first but after a couple more nightmare periods accompanied by excruciating bowel movements i decided to go for it expecting all my problems to go away. Here I am 10 days post-op with no uterus no tubes and still this same pain with bowel movements and passing gas. My surgery was done laparoscopic and she even said my ovaries were fine. I have an appointment with my gyno this week i hope she has some type of answer and not just tell me it's post-op pain.
Unfortunately ultrasounds do NOT show endometriosis. Only a laparoscopy can do that.

:( I'm late to replying to this but I relate so much. I'm only 18 but I've felt this for YEARS probably since my period started or about a year after.. and I haven't gone to a doctor for it, but I'm on my period now and it hurt so so bad again, I probably have to see a doctor :( my mom had fibroids and had to have a hysterectomy, my aunt also had to get a surgery, probably a hysterectomy too, and my grandma had a surgery toO.. i really don't want to do that. I probably won't if that's one of my options and it really is severe
Hi all - I have the exact same problem but *might* (I emphasise, might) have found something that really helps. It's early days, but out of desperation I've been taking ginger supplements starting a week before each period (two tablets per day). The first month I tried it I noticed a significant decrease in the sharp stabbing pains. I thought it was probably a fluke but it's been 3 months now and the pain has got less and less each time. This month I've only had 1 stabbing pain and it was very minor. Ginger is known to be good at a lot of things, including helping with gastro-intestinal problems and it's also a good anti-inflammatory. I can't think of anything else that I've done which could be making this difference, so worth a shot if you've got nothing to lose.

Ischemia colitis, having a hysterectomy did not relieve pain. Had resection before ,before for Crohn's ,4 ft. Removed. 72 now and still have pain in left side. Finally , told its ischemic colitis. After having bleeding episodes requiring transfusions.. No cure ,, take stool softeners daily and pain meds
