Please help as soon as you can. my dad has just come out of hospital after 2 weeks , he has had nearly 2 weeks at home now and itsnt getting any better. he has lost 2 stone and really really doesn’t have that to loose to start with, he now just looks like a skeleton, he has no energy. His antibiotics ran out, the doctor said it was fine as he had been on them for 3 weeks. 4 days into them running out and we are nearly back at square one, got the doctor out and they put him back on the antibiotic pills again.  He hardly drinks alcohol before this and of course isn’t now, he has a very low fat diet before this anyway and was very health man, exercise etc . he has no gallstone and they don’t know why he got it, never been ill in his life before. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Please help with what would be best for him to eat to get his strength back and a little weight on as we need to do this ASAP to help him fight it.

any suggestions would be great, we know low fat, but anything in particular? he has chicken & home made veg soups now and fortisips from the hospital so far.

Thank you

Emma

Last year my husband had pancreatitis with complications. He lost over 40 pounds and was just skin and bones and no muscle tone. It was very difficult to get him to eat to put some weight back on. All he could manage for about a month was soup and only a few spoonfuls at a time. Eventually he tried some regular food, potatoes, vegetables. Liquid food suplements are usually recommended such as Ensure (which my husband refused).I convinced him to have toast with peanut butter in between meals. But he also had to take an enzyme (Creon) at every meal and also with a snack. He was able to eat only small meals spread out over the day. You are giving him the right things and it will take time for his appetite to get better. My husband never drank alcohol and still ended up with this. His doctor thinks it was from a combination of Cimetidine and Zocor which he had been taking for a number of years. When he first started eating, the food was passing right through him undigested and this was why he was losing weight.

I wish you both good luck and much patience.

we have found that arrow root biccies are good, they seem to stop him needing to run to the toilet & be all watery. they are easy to eat and seem to settle his tummy as well, so thats one thing on the list

Yes, drs. do not know either. Your last comment is so true. My dr. is really on the ball, but hey, they are not God.
I have no idea what to eat and everything they say not to eat is what I have been eating to stay healthy.

Haleyg..STOP DRINKING NOW! I am 57 years old had my first attack that sent me to the hospital in October acute but now diagonsed with Chronic. I now face a long road of life style changes, none of which are painless.

If I had a clue that drinking would have done this to me I would have never started, BTW, didn't drink until I was over 18.

Pain is probably from diet, stress (college is not a picnic) and other things that should you track eating habits you will find the hidden no-no's.

Yes all of the "bad" habits will push you into more acute attacks and eventually chronic.

Good luck

I didnt drink my pancreatitis was i believed from the seroquel i take for bipolar, however, it is a constant thing in my life now so i have attacks somewhat frequently from the attacks. If you continue to drink you could cause an attack you might not recover from, it can shut down the other vital organs you need to live. you are playing russian roulette by drinking alcohol, and i even recently have banned diet , regular or any kind of imitation sugars as they also aggravate the pancreas.

Did anyone have diarrhea after pancreatitis?

Yes, I could go nowhere because of it...had "blowouts" several times. After a few days of strict diet with a little walking, bowels became normal. Find soup crackers may be a culprit because of the high fat content.

No, no meds I know of. Just adhering to low-fat, good carbs diet as all the websites and doctors insist on.

Certain amount of pain at times till you learn what foods/beverages cause it and don't cause it.

Good news is, you're not alone now you've found this website.

My acute pancreatitis is also idiopathic. Eventually my doctor in DC did a Sphincterotomy via ERCP which worked great for six years. Even though the doctors in my case insist diet does not matter in my case, it does help. Smaller meals and lower fat whenever possiible. Good luck.

It's great to have found this thread. I just got out of the hospital from an acute pancreatitis attack I had last Friday (which I though would kill me). I'm looking for the proper diet so I could avoid further attacks in the future. The doctor actually told me that my guess would be as best as his since my acute pancreatitis seems to be idiopathic, I'm not a drinker and my ultrasound test showed no gallstones in my bile duct.

I noticed that I feel full quite easily, half a bread, a serving of soup and a slice/serving of fruit makes me feel quite bloated easily, so I'm thinking of eating small servings at regular intervals instead.

I'm happy to have found the high protein high carb low fat diet from here. I'm going to try it until my next check up.

I have pancreaitis since 2005 due to the medication seroquel, i have had a lot of attacks and since this is what i have had to limit in my diet, sugar can start it up and it begins with nausea. I have also cut my meat intake way down and try to substitute meat with turkey burgers because there is no fat. I also try to watch everything i eat, i can eat meat but i stay away from the skin on the meat, or fat off the meat

I've read numerous posts on pacreatitis attacks and this by far hit the nail on the head for me! One difference is that I go to AA meetings. I stopped drinking for 15 years and picked back up for three. It was then I had my first attack in May 2012. No fun!! Out of the hospital and within days picked back up again. Yes, I drank to access. August, bam, another one. This one far worse than the first but the numbers weren't very high at all. I was in the hospital a week and thought I'd die if I didn't get something to drink......water!! So far now two weeks clean and sober. I've lost 10 lbs. and feel better than I have in years. Stop now or your condition will very likely become chronic and no one wants to live that way. I'm 56 and my father had these diseases as well and it is inherited. If some told you if you could become well as long as you didn't eat green beans that would be easy. Maybe a little harder but if you are going to have a disease best have one you can easily put in remisssion!! Don't drink alcohol!! It's the #1 killer of many!! We are so lucky it's that simple for many of us!!
