Yes! It has been a year and a half since my attack of chronic (apparently) pancreatitis. and my bowel movements are still not normal. I am on Creon 10. All the foods they recommend for pancreatitis , veggies, fruits etc. seem to go right through me!!!

Take it from a former drinker who has twice had pancreatitis: STOP DRINKING. It is the No. 1 cause of pancreatic trouble. I know, it's extremely hard to do, but you have to stop drinking. As my sister, a doctor, told me: "Either stop drinking or this is going to kill you."

and arrogant. I suggest do your research gain as much knowledge as you can! Knowledge is power. I don't believe mine is alcohol induced. They are now saying 'idiopathic' and therefore they think that's a good enough answer. WTF?? idiopathic mean none of the above! So would anyone like to enlighten me on what they mean the answe is?? In other words they can't be stuffed finding out the cause. How do I get through to the dr's so I can use medical facitities to research cause. Like CT scans, xrays, etc

Hello - I've just been released from the hospital after a thirteen day bout of pancreatitis. I thought I had a bad case of gas, little did i know what was in store for me. Eleven days with a tube down my nose - scared out of my mind. Been home for two days and trying to find the right foods to prevent a relapse. I am finding that smaller portions and lots of cranberry juice and coconut water is helping. I and searching for creative ways of eating properly to not be in pain, but I'm not sure what are the best foods.
this experience has really been an education for me. I guess my life and more importantly my eating habits are going to change forever. So far i've been surviving on vegetable soup, soft boiled eggs, cream of wheat. It's only been a couple of days, but i will have to learn as i go along.

Hi,
I just had a bout of acute pancreatitis. No reason. Just came about. At ER was told every one of my numbers were perfect except lypase, which was well over 8000! Had ER drs and my PCP scratching their heads. I got to recoup at home since my liver function and white blood cell count were well in the normal zone.
This came completely out of no where. Drank only clear liquids and jello for 2.5 days. Am back to moderate eating. I have had a fruit, veggie, chicken and butter utter (must have my pb) and pretty much fat free diet. I estimate from my food tracker on sp that I get under 30g daily. Recommended is up to 62g. I have had these eating habits for the past 5 years As well as regularly hitting the gym.
My quesTion is this... what am I supposed to change to avoid this happening again. My PCP just told me to follow a low fat diet, which is the norm for me. Any thought?
hope you are all well.

Most doctors use the same playbook when it comes to pancreatitis. I know because I've seen lots of doctors and they pretty much all do the same thing. The obvious things are Alcohol and gall stones. They never found any gallstones in any diagnostic but they removed my gallbladder anyhow. I rarely drink alcohol, so that wasn't it. After several trips to the ER and reoccuring pancreatitis, I decided to visit the MAYO Clinic in MN. It's where the "good" doctors hang out. I was there for a day or so and a simple blood test showed my triglycerides were upwards of 1,100 or so. They said they've seen people with lipid levels over 800 have attacks, so anything higher is almost guaranteed. The short and sweet of it is simply diet. Keep the lipids in check and that's that.
I'm glad to say that it's mostly worked for me. I've been on several different statin drugs to limit cholesterol/lipids and currently taking Antara. I exercise frequently and my diet has been pretty good overall. Every once and a while I'll have some gut pain to remind me of what I'm doing but I haven't been hospitalized in years now. - Good luck!

My husband is in the same boat. He takes 2 x 25 Creon when he is having a more 'fatty' meal. which helps. We thought that mozzarella cheese was giving him problems when we ate at Pizza Hut, but he tried pizza at another place and he had no problems. So, it wasn't the cheese it was probably the grease in the pizza. He learned that he should take the Creon BEFORE he starts eating.

I have had episodes of severe pain for many years, I still have not got a final diagnosis but believe that pancreatitis is a high contender. This last time it has not been short lived and has continued for over a year. Most episodes have been linked to just before my period. In the last year I hit menopause! Major hormone changes. Years ago I kept saying that the contraceptive pill made me ill. All the hormone links have been ignored. I have also played a key role in getting anywhere near a diagnosis, as the doctors have just shrugged and I'm sure many have thought it was all in my head. I rarely drink alcohol, eat very healthy ad am extremely fit for my 52 years. My diet was naturally low in fat but I am now going to make sure it is as fat free as possible if this is the culprit.

I had an acute pancreatitis three weeks ago. I had pain in my upper abdomen and under my esternum, high fever, and several diarrhea. since then my stool is pale, and my pain is still there. If I eat something fatty, I had a lot of problems. I never drink, my triglycerides and cholesterol levels are low so the doctors could not find a clear reason. I don't feel good yet and I went to the GI Dr. And he thought it could be IBS, but in the hospital keep me for 3 days trying to decrease my lipase level (was higher than 1800). I don't know what to do? Any recommendation besides the low fat diet? The hospital's doctor did not recommend me anything.
thanks for your answers and for this space to share our experiences.

I had a full day stay at the ER last Friday, and left without any real direction. They told me what they told many of you... water, Gatorade, Jello, chicken broth, etc. I was disappointed, as its all sugar! It really upset me, as all my blood work said was inflammation, and the CT scan was clear. I decided not to baby it. I stayed on the clear diet for the day (when I got home). It was ok.
I decided that I was going to change my diet, and read up online. Keep in mind, I'm a young 31 and healthy/active. This may not be for everyone.
I will summarize...
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK:
-fried food
-dairy
-alcohol
-red meats
-simple, processed sugars (junk food, sugar cereals, white bread, etc)
-ENERGY DRINKS (they mess with your body's ability to produce insulin and adrenaline...yikes!)
IF YOUR PAIN IS GONE:
-spinach, kale, other dark leafy greens - anti inflammatory
-beets - helps gallbladder, associated with the pancreas
-avocados, flaxseed oil, fish oils, tuna, salmon - omega-3 fatty acids (also good for brain function/memory)
-beans
-mushrooms
-tomato - Iycopene
I haven't met with my Dr. yet, I will on Friday. And then speak with a nutritionist. I'm already dairy free, hardly drink, and eat fairly healthy. But I was drinking energy shots. I think that's one of the reasons. I know my body, its out of whack. I was also prescribed a stimulant, which I have stopped. I have decided it was a bad reaction.
More importantly, I will treat my pancreas well and think of it as healing with positivity. The brain is the most powerful medicine.
Oh, and try to reduce stress too. Ya know, cause you enjoy the stress, and you can just let it go whenever you want lol ;-)
Do whatever you need to make you smile
-headphones with your favorite music
-dancing, painting, singing, exercising, donating, helping other people, writing a sincere thank you letter, etc
Sorry if that sounded preachy, but sometimes its a lot of factors at once. Good luck and be well!

im a medical student and my brother recently had acute pancreatitis so ive been a little eager about the best management.Anyways you want to start with 6 or so small meals a day.Low fat and high protein, avoid saturated fats. The exact amount depends on the severity of the process. If you have any further questions id suggest you see a nutritionist as you may need to supplement your diet with vitamins A, D,E & K.And of course..no alcohol :)
