My girlfriend has PCOS and comes on about every three months. We are not trying for a child but two weeks ago the condom broke so she took the morning after pill. She was told it should bring her on her period that is one month away yet. It never so we have done to pregnacy tests they both say positive. She is now two weeks late. Is there any way this could be a mistake?

Kind regards James

Hi, I've been diagnosed with PCOS seven years ago. I've had more than my share of negative hpt and a whole lot of blood tests done which all came back negative. About two years ago I had a really long and painful period (about 3 weeks). I went to the doctor who said it is definitely not a miscarriage because the hpt I did a few days before the bleeding started was negative. They gave me some pills to stop the bleeding and painkillers for the headache I had due to a high level of blood loss. But, about a week after that I went to the bathroom and there was this small sack thing that came out. I just thought it was a clot. Last year I decided to go to a different gynecologist and sure enough he told me that I have definitely been pregnant sometime before. To me this was a total surprise! It's hard to except that you ALMOST had what your heart desires above anything else and lost it due to something you can't control! So YES, I definitely believe that PCOS can affect the results of a hpt!

Wow wow WOW!

Although this post isn't very active, I'm glad it was top on my google search. My wife was diagnosed with PCOS in 2006. Had a great doctor then, who had an answer to all of her symptoms. We've gone through 2 IVF cycles, both were cancelled before harvesting eggs. I've also got health issues that effect my ability as well. But a few weeks ago, it might have happened. She's been experiences some symptoms of pregnancy, and has taken 2 tests so far. Both neg. No surprise after reading these posts. We were talking about taking the 3rd (and last) in that pack I bought. She suggested I do a search.

Unfortunately, the great doctor has left the practice where she was to work with elderly people. I'm not sure how easy it will be to get her current doc to do an ultrasound. But we have hope.

Also, our dog has been very clingy to her. A previous search, dogs often can tell when someone is pregnant.

Could it be our time? It's in God's hands, possibly with the tools of the doctors.

I am a mother, an egg donor and a medical student. I have PCOS. I have a 3 year old son who was conceived on birth control. I have always had irregular cycles except while on bc. I found out I was pregnant after 4 months and 12 hpt's o.O . I knew I was pregnant for sure before peeing on the last test because I threw up while eating one of my favorite foods. I know alot of doctors thought that it was impossible for all of the tests to come out negative up until then. I just chalked it up to not taking the tests first thing in the morning. I donated eggs this past year and was seen regularly by a fertility specialist who diagnosed me with PCOS also explained how it was possible for me to get pregnant on bc. Apparently most women who are responsible with their birth control and still get pregnant most likely have PCOS. He also explained that although rare, some women with PCOS do not build detectable HCG levels as other women and that the only way to be sure when you are late for your period is to have an US. My sister became pregnant this past year and she knew rigt away that she was pregnant. She took 2 hpt's and a blood test at her doctors office and they were all negative as well. More hormone testing was done and eventually an US and she was infact pregnant. My mom never knew she was pregnant until the 4th-5th month because no tests would come back positive until then. A fertility specialist is really the person to ask. You just have to remember that if you are pregnant and the test come back negative it is just a matter of time before it will be very clear weather you are or not. Try to live a lifestyle that woul be healthy if you are pregnant so your body is healthy ready for a new life. :-D

Hi

I was dx with PCOS/D when I was approximately 21. I had all the classic symptoms, rapid and unexplained weight gain, amenoria (lack of periods), horrible cramping, PMDD etc. I was scared to death, I always knew I would want kids one day. Now I am 31 and my husband and I are finally trying. I need to know if anyone has any advice on what type of tests to use, I apparently am ovulating because I got my period in January, then started trying to conceive 9 days post period through to two days after the ovulation sticks said I had an LH surge. I am now in the testing phase and so far no sign of a second pink line. I was curious if there is a special kind of test, or if anyone has any advice on if i should hold off on testing, if I go based on a 28 day cycle (which I have never had a normal cycle) I am 4 days late for my period. I just don't know if that is my normal PCOS or if it is that I am pregnant. My skin started breaking out two days ago, and I have been really nauseous at night (not in morning) past few nights before bed.
Any ideas etc. Also, is metformin ok for taking while you are pregnant or do you plan to get off it if you get pregnant
Thanks

Hi Dr. Audiomom,

One of my wife's friends was on metformin while pregnant (also PCOS). Although no formal studies, it tends to help with pregnancy, as well as Insulin for those with diabetes (either pre- or post pregnany) Ultrasound is really the only sure way to know, if the hpt or blood tests say no, and no cycle starting.

Update on us. Still getting negative tests, typically a little less than weekly. No start of her cycle. Some hints, but nothing definite. My wife is dreading trying to convience a doctor now to give her an ultrasound to check. She's not been confortable with many doctors. The one who did diagnose her with PCOS was the exception.

My wife thinks it could be another delayed or skipped cycle. She's definitely not regular.

Still wondering, hoping, but not anticipating,
Bobbwk

I have PCOS and had 4 false negatives with my daughter's pregnancy. We didn't get a positive test until I was 10 weeks pregnant yet I knew I was as I had every symptom for pregnancy you could think of. I took metformin to conceive and carried on taking it until 18 weeks which by then is apparantly safer for miscarriage. Not sure if I perhaps should have stayed on it though as I had a bleed at 28weeks and the start of premature labour. It stopped itself but was very scary. Am now trying for a second bub and on metformin once again. We managed to fall very quickly the first time but I had taken metformin for around 3 months before we started trying. Hope this helps- I felt like I was going crazy as I just knew I was pregnant

I was 21 and working 16 hour shifts when I realized that my period was 2 weeks late. I tested and got a negative result. The next week I took another test and got another negative. This went on for another 3 weeks before I decided that I must be hormonally imbalanced or working too hard. I had lost almost 10 pounds due to the demands of my job and I knew that weight loss on someone as small as I am could cause me to stop having a period. I forgot about the lack of period for quite some time. I had never been diagnosed with any kind of issue such as PCOS so i felt that I could trust the tests. One day I was eating lunch with my brother and the smell of the food others were eating made me extremely ill so I drove across the street and bought another test. I swear all I had to do was look at the test and it was positive. I was terrified because I had been on the birthcontrol patch and there was no way that I had made a mistake and I realized that I still had the patch on. Hy husband and I went to the doctor and they did an ultrasound. I was 14 weeks pregnant. I was so shocked I had no idea how it was possible.

I recently donated eggs to a woman. I had to have hormone levels checked and before an ultrasound was ever done the fertility specialist informed me that I have PCOS. I told him about the pregnancy with my son and how I was on birth control in a joking way talking about the fact that I assumed I must be VERY fertile. He laughed and sighed and then told me that Women who get pregnant on birth control almost always have a degree of PCOS (if taken religiously). He also asked me about my family history and how soon my mother or sister was able to test positive. I had never asked my mom this question so later I called her and she informed me that she never knew that she was pregnant before the 4th month. My sister had all negative HPT through the second month and she finally went to the doctor and got a positive blood test.

For some silly reason I still buy the tests when I am late... like the last 3 weeks, but I know that I can't trust the results. It is very possible for a woman with PCOS to not produce enough HCG for a test to detect. My solution to this problem... find a great doctor. If it is possible find a midwife with ultrasound machines in her office. my best friend has the greatest midwife.. I was having pain and discomfort followed be a very late period and even though she had never seen me before and I live 4 hours away she set me up a next day appointment. She did a test and an ultrasound right away only to show a few HUGE cysts. This is the kind of doctor I am looking for here in Tucson... its hard to find. I didn't feel stupid for freaking out about the late period and the face that she took me very seriously about the previous false pregnancy test wit my son made me feel comfortable and like I would be willing to drive 8 hours round trip to see her when I needed to. I have found that MD's are rushed, not very gentile and don't hear a thing that I say. They don't answer questions and I am not going to pay for that kind of service.

I also have fibrocystic breasts and the real reson that I am on here is because I have been noticing a yellow/green discharge from my nipples. I am late for my period and not worried enough to go to the doctor yet. I am sure it must be a hormonal issue maybe PCOS or fibrocystic breasts but I wondered if anyone has experience a colored discharge like this before. It seems to be random. I would be worried about the discharge and the lack of period except it seems to soon to be lactating and the yellow/green coloring? My periods seem to be anywhere from 28 days to 45 days lately so I am not ready to drive all the way to the midwife quite yet... Any ideas?

ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY!! I was 160lbs when I came to US in Q4 2008 then 2009 and 2010 I gained like 25 lbs, any exercise any diet was just not helping. Than I started having facial hairs, dark patches on skin and more so much that I would try to avoid going to party's. Then Nov 2010 went to India and a gyneac checkup. She mentioned that I had PCOD and the very day my life and dreams appeared to crash. She recommended Metformin and exercise to reduce 10% weight. In March, I was 171lbs :) Did not have my cycles in March and April and then a positive hpt in last week of April. This was still scary as both DH and I had read about PCOD and difficulty in conception and infertility. 2 days later my ob/gyn confirmed that I AM PREG!!!! Advised care , prenatals and to continue Metformin till end of 1st Trimester. Am now 7+ weeks and last week saw my baby's heartbeat @140bpm. We are excited but careful too So to everyone TTC, please be happy and don't worry, you'll see ur baby in ur arms. Please be happy Thanks Metformin and my doc in India and US.

Hi, I'm 20 and was diagnosed officially 3 months ago with PCOS; however have been treated via birth control for 2 years for the same issue. Most drs said I was borderline PCOS. I have been TTC for around a year.  I have been on Metformin since February this year and am returning for a 3 month check up next week. I have not had a period since beginning the meds however with all contreceptives I had normal periods. I always know when it's time for my period due to acne breakouts and slight discomfort in my ovary area. However the last 2-3 weeks I have been very sick to my stomach almost to the point of actually throwing up and had awful heartburn. I get sick first thing in the morning and as I lay down for bed at night. It seems I can never get enough sleep and the pain has been a little different than normal; not to mention no breakouts. I have this fluttering feeling every other day in both sides of my lower abdomen and very sensitive breast (which isn't common). I have taken a few hpt and all neg. I have always had misleading results such as positives for months and not be pregnant at all. It is very stressful and heartbreaking getting the neg even if the result is possibly wrong. I no longer have health insurance so my only doctor is the ob at my local health department and I am not totally sure if they have an US machine there. I have read articles on different sites saying things such as psychological pregnancies are possible when it is something you want very much. With neg hpt and blood tests being my only choice next, does anyone have any advice?

If your doctor is not listening to you and is making you feel stupid, then you really need to get a new doctor.  It's their job to listen to you and really figure out what is going on with your body.  Maybe your current doctor doesn't have enough experience with PCOS to help you out properly.  You should find a doctor that at least listens to you and then talks rationally about what is happening.  I'm seeing mine tomorrow.  He's the one that diagnosed me for PCOS and has helped me understand what that means and never made me feel foolish for scheduling appointments to confirm being pregnant or not.  I have taken hpt frequently since being diagnosed and all were glaring absolute negatives, but today I had three possitives.  So tomorrow I'll get him to confirm it and tell me how far along I am and what to do now to carry my baby full term.  Weightloss and a good doctor is what helped me.

You are VERY fertile for a woman with PCOS. This gives me hope. I've been having symptoms, BAD, but negative pregnancy tests. I haven't taken one in 10 days, but I too have PCOS, so if I miss my period, I'm going to a Parenthood Planning Clinic to get a sonogram.
