My husband has the same problem. He was in the army when it started. He was 5' 8" and 180lbs at the time. He ran everyday and did plenty of exercise. They didn't go away, and he still gets them.

Hi, i have been all over the net searching for answers to this problem. i have had it for 2 years now and its gone.
I FOund something that works. It may or may not work for everyone but i hope i can help. I bought selsun blue moisturizing with aloe and wash twice a day. once before i go out to work and again when i get home. I scrub until there is bubbles and let it sit for 5 mins then rinse. i did this twice in one shower when i first started but i think once is ok. Its to let the medication absorb into the scalp and into the roots where bacteria and other stuff are. After the shower i get Isopropyl rubbing alcohol 70% and use a cotton ball and apply. It will sting! but it is very soothing after. You can do 50%alcohol and 50% water. Rubbing alcohol will dry out the skin so use with caution. I like my hair short but when i used this method my hair was about inch long. so when jumping out of the shower i didnt dry my hair much and just applied the rubbing alcohol.
Diet is important i think here. Drink lots of water and take multi vitamins. For 2 years i have been drinking excessively going out and partying which may have contributed to the inflammation. I would like to believe i got it from a barber who did not clean his buzzers... i think most commonly it is due to staph infection , yeast/fungus infections, but there is many other reasons. If it does get itchy i just use rubbing alcohol it solves my itch. Another reason why diet is important was because i tried a alkaline diet. It is a cleansing diet in which you rid your body of acids. It did clear up my scalp acne, but it is a hard diet to go on. Fast food is soooo convenient that i cant commit to the diet. But try your best to get those foods in look up alkaline diets and drink lots of water. You should drink half your body weight in ounces. if you are 200 lbs you should drink 100 ounces thats about 2 liters.
I've used with minor or no results neosporin and bacitracin. Both strong topical antibiotics. Topical benzoyl peroxide 2.5%. Head and shoulders. head and shoulders did solve it once but i think i had to change pillow case and do all that stuff but didnt and it came back. Which leads me to think that the bacteria became stronger and more resistant to the topical antibiotics.
I am not a doctor nor have i visited one. But i hope this helps you...any of you! i know how it feels ... embarrasing to get a hair cut, how sore it is to touch or even sleep on. I Understand totally and i hope this helps!

At guest who just wrote about the husband who was in army. I also served. It could be dirty buzzers! my marine friend also said a few guys have them in his unit. Which makes me believe the buzzers are not sterile. Either that or they scratch it alot..cause irritation get pimples and pop them or cause small lacerations which then get infected. Remember to let the medicated shampoo to soak into the roots! Goodluck!

I have the same problem. I think the guy who said something about being a staph infection and if you have a swollen lymph node in the back of your neck area it's a sure sign...well it is for me! I have tried many things, these babies come whenever they want! They leave then come back again. I don't know what to do!

I have been getting these for 10+ years now and I believe it started when I visited a barbershop and got it transmitted to me. I don't go to barbers now and I only cut my own hair.

What is the solution?????????????

I workout, eat right, not overweight, do not get pimples on my face...only the back of my head.

Can I buy an antibiotic over the counter? Should i put on alcohol throughout the day and dry those puppies??
Buy Oxy and put it on? What works out there people? Thanks

Hi guys, I am 36 now and had the same problem for the past 16 years, I've tried everything from western medication to herbal medication but nothing seems to work, I would start antibiotics for a week and it would clear for a week or two maximum and thereafter come out even worse. My problem is that the pimples started spreading to all areas of the body where hair grows i.e. face, chest & below the naval. I try to grow a short beard just to hide the pimples but at times they come out the size of a boil and dont burst for a weak or longer and theafter the facial hairs that grow there actually fall off leaving a hairless patch and now the pimple/boil realy shows. Sometimes the facial once are so big and painful that I use a sterile needle just to burst them. I've been to herberlist and as per there opinion it has to do with toxins in the blood which have been produced by the Kidneys & Liver. The problem is that we eat Junk food, Cold drinks, processed foods and these are a burden to the kidneys & liver to break up and produce healthy blood. I use eastern medication called "blood purifiers" and this helps until I complete the medication but thereafter it's back to the same. I'm constantly constipated and Ive tried changing my diet and this does help. but when I got out its extremely difficult to stay away from junk food. I am willing to try anything just hope to fined a cure!!!

Hi guys, i had this problem for 5 years now, and it is starting to spread. Someone mentioned it was due by diverticulitis, and my older brother has this conditioned and he has no pimples on the back of the head what so ever. So my guess its more than that for some people.

I went to doctors for 3 years, and nothing happened. It made it worst. I did found out that my uncle did had this condition when he was younger, and took him three months to remove them. I had a conversation with him two weeks ago and he is going to send me the products he used to remove them. The problem here is the diet, anything that upsets the stomach....well stop eating it because apparently it's not mixing or does not go well with your body.

I am using Garlic believe or not to calm them down or stop the inflammation. It burns like hell but once the burning stops you see the pimples shrink and it does not make them go crazy. what i mean by that, it does not make them reappear for 3 days or inflamed once again, but it also does not make them spread even further. which is the good part, it smells but use a shampoo that might cover the smell XD...

i also read its because the liver and intestines. I am going to detox my body next week, to remove any harmful chemicals i might have. try that it might help. i will come back in three weeks, and tell you guys how it went.

Hi, i am back to let you all know that i have no more pimples on the back of my head anymore. I barely use the alcohol anymore only when it itches. i am sorry to hear that some of you lived with it for so long. the person above did hit the point i was trying to say. Liver can only break down so much before it sends it somewhere else. Beer had a factor in my problem i do not drink anymore. some people dont even drink tho and have that problem. See a doctor if my solution doesnt work.

My advice: 1) Try to the change your diet for at least 2 weeks..go ahead and be a health nut. See if there is any change in size or pain.
2) Medicated shampoo.... i use selsun blue with aloe. let it sit in your for at least 5 minutes.

3) Rubbing alcohol 70%... apply with cotton ball. May sting and burn so you may want to mix with water. For the first week i was applying after showers and whenever it itched. nice soothing and cooling. My thoughts were to let the alcohol get into the hair follicle and kill what was in the roots.

4) Change your pillow case and your bed sheets. Might as well throw that pillow out too. change towels as well.

5) Drink lots of water. you need to flush out those toxins.

Go ahead and take some vitamins..i take one a days energy pill.

Make sure to keep track of any change while trying this. If it dont help i dont know what will so go see a doctor. GOODLUCK to you. Here is a link to help better educate yourself

hi guys

i used to have the problem really bad, with the painful zit like things popping up around my head. thinking back, i didnt used to have it in childhood where i got my haircuts at home, only after i visited the barber shops in my adulthood. i used so many different options like the above posts, they havent worked for me, but ill add the one that is working for me. now i only get 1 every now and then and its gone in a couple of days after application of this. i used to also have these zits on my back but they are gone now. took about a year before i noticed the zits really gone. i use a treatment called rose cream with dmso and a oxygen.

hope this helps

I went to my Dr. after 4 years of this and MANY attempts to figure it out by myself. He said it's a staph infection and prescribed Mupirocin Onintment USP 2 %
When I ask him , " Why if it's a staph infection does it stay local to the back and sides of my head?" He said, " That was the point where my immune system would kick in and not let it spread further".
He told me to wash the area with "Hibiclens" (Chlorhexidine Gluconate 4 %) an antimicrobial skin cleaner and then apply the Mupirocin 2% as directed.
For the first time in YEARS I'm symptom free. :-D

I've had problems with acne on the back of my head for years. I found that the main trigger for me was porridge oats!
I also have a suspicion that dairy, especially cheese, is a trigger. I don't eat cheese now and I don't drink any more. I don't think alcohol was a trigger, but stopping drinking has been an eye-opener in terms of fitness improvements. I recommend it.

I still get occasional break-outs on the back of my head. I'm having one now, a few days after a long, hot cycle ride, which took all day, so I'm wondering if the breakouts are caused by sweat too. I cycle to work, but it's only 30mins each way and then I shower, so not much sweat.

Anyone else linking these breakouts with sweating?

...I would add that I think it's important to eat well, no processed food, cut down on meat, eat lots of veg and some fruit. Not too much fruit, though as I've found its sugar content can cause acne too.

Been thinking, the break-outs may not be linked to sweat alone, but perhaps sweat and a hormone, maybe testosterone. My reasoning is that when I was riding a motorcycle in a very hot climate, for about three weeks, wearing a helmet, sweating buckets and guess what, no break-out. However, after a strenuous gym session, pushing a lot of weights and sweating, I got a breakout. Last weekend, strenuous cycling and I get a breakout.

Maybe that's it. Just need to take it easy on the exercise. Everything in moderation?

Following on, think I've found what's causing the spots on the back of my head when I'm exercising. It's a combination of sweat and man-made fibres. Sounds like a long shot, I know, but it's true.

During my cycle ride, mentioned above, I was wearing a polyester sun hat. The weekend prior to that, I went horse-riding, and had another break out the following day. Guess what, later in the day, after the horse ride, I was wearing the same polyester hat.

This weekend, it's hotter, I sweated more, but wore a pure cotton sun hat. So far, no break-out.

Thinking back to the work out at the gym which seemed to cause another break-out, I was doing some squats with a bar of weights resting on my neck. Around the bar, to cushion my neck was some foam padding encased in a man-made fiber case. Coincidence?

So, in short, I think the main triggers for my acne have been:

1. Oats
2. Dairy
3. Man-made fibre.

I'm pretty much clear of break-outs now. To anyone with problem skin I would say the main thing to look at is diet.
Cut out all processed food. Don't eat too much of any one food thinking it's good for you the more you eat as too much of anything can bad (e.g. too much fruit = too much sugar = zits). Drink plenty of water. Don't drink alcohol. Get plenty of sleep. Avoid stress. Get plenty of fresh air.

I know how it is to feel disgusted by your own skin. Hang in there. Diet could be the answer.
