CURED! I am replying to my own post about paradoxical relaxation. My body was stuck in fight or flight mode due to the triggering of my fight or flight response. These led to the multiple erections at night that greatly disturbed my sleeping quality. However, after 2.5 years of a journey and continuous visits to my neurologist, we finally solved the ROOT CAUSE! My body was stuck in fight or flight because I have OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA)! I am betting this is the case for most folks on here. I see when you go to the home page of this topic, it shows a doctor has answered the question with diagnoses shown, but OSA is not even listed. I’m not a doctor (just an engineer), but I am married to one who has helped me walk through this. With obstructive sleep apnea, my oxygen levels (as measured by my Garmin watch) were dropping to as low as the mid to upper 70’s at night (normal is 95-100%). Typical average lows were in the low 80’s. My neurologist finally ordered a sleep study, and I actually got to do it at home with a company called Snap Diagnostics. Their device allowed for 3 nights of data that measured my breathing, pulse ox, and snoring. The results were that I was having an apnea event on average of just over 100 per night (every 4-5 minutes). Every time that happened, it triggered my body’s fight or flight response. I am now about 5 weeks into using an APAP (CPAP, but set to an automatic pressure) and I do not have the erection issue any longer. My airway was collapsing in my throat area, and the APAP opens it up so I can breath. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET A SLEEP STUDY TO CHECK FOR OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA! I am so thankful I kept going back to my neurologist and we finally got to the bottom of it. I am betting most of you have OSA too, as 33 million Americans do and it’s grossly under diagnosed. Do the deep breathing exercises to calm your nervous system down, but get a sleep study to find the root cause. I am posting this to help others since I finally figured out the solution!

My doctor finally figured out the root cause. OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA)! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET A SLEEP STUDY DONE. My body was stuck in fight or flight as I mentioned in my previous post, but it was because of OSA. With every apnea event, the body’s fight or flight response is triggered. Don’t listen to the doctor that answered the “What to do about painful nighttime erections.” He doesn’t even mention sleep apnea as a potential cause. But it is! After doing breathing exercises to get my body out of fight or flight, I am now on a CPAP and I no longer have the issue whatsoever! Fully cured!
OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA WAS THE ROOT CAUSE!
Hi, several years later.. How are you doing? I suffer from SRPE every night for the past 3-4 years. It's tough to pinpoint exactly when it started and what caused it, but I also took antibiotics for H. Pylori before this had started. I also remember having a tenderness/fullness in perineum for few months (maybe 4-6 months) around the time just before it had started. I gradually developed difficulty urinating and just have much lower capacity now in my bladder so have to pee more often than I used to. I'm 45 years old now. Urologist recommending surgery for my bladder neck but has no idea about this SRPE, so doesn't give me much confidence.
I suffered with this problem for 6 or 7 years, and I think I've finally discovered why most doctors could not help myself (or most of the other men who struggle with this). I've made a few videos explaining it. On u tube (incorrectly spelled on purpose) do a search for "curing sleep relate painful erections." It is too much to explain here, but the key factor (much of the time) is, in my view, high histamine levels. I don't claim that this protocol works for all cases (as there are multiple causes of this problem). But I suspect that it works for a huge percentage.
Hi, do you think running and other exercise is okay to do or do you think it will make it worse?
This is exactly what happened to me. It started with sitting for 2 days straight and then a stomach bug for which I was on antibiotics for a long time.
I'm now suffering from this , did any of you guys ever mange to sort the issue
Hi. I’m the one that mentioned the sleep apnea as the root cause. That was true. Between obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea events as well, those caused my nervous system to become deregulated (got stuck in “fight or flight” because the fight or flight response was being triggered so much during the night from apnea events). I do not have the painful erections anymore whatsoever, so i am cured. I sleep so much better and get full REM, deep, and light sleep stages typically nightly. I’m so thankful i continued to dig into it and continued to see my doctor. Ultimately, I saw about four different providers not including my spouse, who is also a provider. Between all of that and my own research, we figured it out. I’d get a sleep study if I were you to determine if you have sleep apnea.
