Yes this is true. They believe the appendix keeps a stock of good bacteria to repopulate the gut (esp after illness). I've had mine out too and had pain and bowel issues unless i work to feed my good bacteria. Milk kefir has billion of live bacteria to repopulate the gut, fermented foods yoghurt all good PROBIOTICS to eat but our micribes need food too called PREBIOTICS fruit veges oats resistant starch.. it's a pain to maintain but still better than dying from sepsis from a ruptured appendix.

I had mine removed when I was 23 (I'm 30 now) and gained a lot of weight in just a few months. I went from 135 pounds to 160 pounds in about 3 months with no changes made to my diet or activity levels. I had always been about 130-140, so this was a major weight gain for me. It took about 4 years to lose all that weight and I am now back to 135, but still have stomach issues. I have been diagnosed with IBS but haven't been able to pinpoint triggering foods despite following the FODMAP diet and avoiding some of the foods I really enjoy. However, I am starting to suspect that I have issues with lactose and should probably limit gluten as well. I eat very healthy for the most part and stay active, but get very painful bloating. The doctors around here seem to think that having my appendix removed is not related to any of these things, but I don't understand how anyone with some common sense can say that. It's extremely frustrating and annoying.

I had my appendix out in may via laparoscopy I was rushed in for emergency surgery whilst having it removed doctors told me I had a collection of fluid around the area which was removed I have never been the same since I suffer so much with pains! I have been back to my gp 6 times complaining of the pain I can't do anything when I get it it is that bad also causes vomiting back ache only to be told it is 'knitting pains' I can no longer wear tight clothing because everybody thinks I'm pregnant due to my stomach being that swollen :(

I had my appendix out in April (4 months ago) and am now suffering terrible gas and very unpredictable and foul-smelling bowel movements. I've also gained a few pounds and feel very bloated overall. I had SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) in the past, and last year had taken some Rifaximin for it, and this feels like it could possibly be a recurrence, but I don't know if it's that or related to the appendectomy. I follow a low FODMAP diet, which helps a lot, and have started taking more probiotics, which I think helps a some also. I'm probably going to back to my naturopath to see if she has ideas about this and should get re-tested for SIBO, which is a pain but worth it if it helps. Interestingly, I'm also experiencing fatigue and a recurrence of my depression, and recently had a flare of my Meniere's disease. I've heard that the gut influences your immune system as well as your mood.

Pay attention to what you eat. My son had his out 4 months ago and has noticed the stomach issues every time he eats dairy. He seems to be lactose intolerant after the surgery.

Almost same here. Its been 11 months. One month after appendectomy my symptoms started. Lower back pain, diaphragm discomfort, can’t able to digest foods, gas, bloating, vomiting sensation, heartburn, feeling weak, can’t able to work as earlier, sometimes can’t able to stand or walk or sleep due to discomfort. Went to Docter and had CT scan. He said everything is normal and perfectly alright. No, it’s not perfect. My regular bowel movements never returned. I got used to all these.

I had my appendix removed only 6 months ago, and it feels like I’m always nauseous. I haven’t seen a doctor for it or anything because I’m not sure if it’s related, but I have been sick 7 times since then, and that’s really unusual for me.
