I have the same mucous problem. I drink even though it hurts terribly, but have to spit out mucous after everything I put in my mouth. I hate to spit, but if I don't I fear I will throw up. I am affraid of dehydration and on day 3 still cannot eat a single thing. Have had to be a trooper through this with 3 kids at home. I have had some surgies and three babies and this tops them all. Did not expect this kind of pain! Good luck to all and the mucous issue would be great if someone could answer it out there.
I am 19, F, and have a very high pain tolerance.
I went into the hospital thinking that the pain would be no worse than strep throat. Boy was I STRONGLY mistaken. When I awoke from the surgery around 11:30 am, I felt fantastic! I drank a whole two cups of water. When they took me back to the pre-op room where my mom was i was doing okay for the first 20 min. Then the nausea came... i threw up ample amounts of blood. I was still out of it for a couple hours but kept throwing up until around 4pm. After a couple popsicles they sent me home. Day one and two were pretty good. I thought to myself... "this went pretty well...no biggy"
Surely enough by night 2 i was nauseated all night from the lortab the doc prescribed. Since i had nothing on my stomach, all that i would throw up was stomach bile and acid. As you can imagine this was no fun on my throat. It felt like someone was taking a knife and constantly stabbing it into my stomach. Not only was it coming up out of my mouth but my nose as well. Since my uvula was so swollen i couldn’t blow out my nose, so i guess i was stuck with bile in my nasal passage. I would sleep for about 30 minutes at a time if i was lucky. After throwing up 3 times that night i thought it was all over. No such luck.
The third, fourth, and fifth day were the worst. It was constant throwing up stomach bile and no pain meds (except Tylenol which doesn’t do much). I also had to take a suppository (those are always fun...) I do have to add that on the fourth night while vomiting, my nose started to bleed and i threw up an old blood clot. That was no fun. I couldn’t sleep because every time i woke up my throat would get dry and it would KILL to swallow. On day three my ears started to hurt. I read earlier on here that someone else described it was drilling holes in my ears and pouring acid down them... that was a nice way of putting it. :'(
I am now on day seven and the pain in my ears is starting to go away, with the meds. Day six was the "light at the end of the tunnel" for me. I was able to actually get down a half of a popsicle and some soup broth. I haven’t thrown up since day five and i pray that it was my last. I still have a few scabs in the back of my throat and hope they fall off with no bleeding. I have to add i also havent had a bowel movement in almost a week!!!! As of right now i REALLY regret having the surgery done, but hopefully in a years time i will feel different. I can honestly say this is the worst pain i have ever been in. If you are thinking about having a tonsillectomy, i would think twice before having it done.
Best advice: For the first few days a cold ice pack on my throat helped and when your ears hurt, put a warm wash cloth on them, it helps with the pain.

I am 31, M. I had my tonsillectomy on 17/03/08 at 3.00 PM. I had crhonic tonsilities since my childhood which I wanted to get rid of. My ENT surgeon had the opperation and on first day I had nausea and I threw out blood for two times. I stayed the clinic till afternoon next day. there it seemed that II would be able to go back to my work within a week. I was improving faster. I was able to have Ice Cream, Juices easily. But it was not the end. After coming home I frequently faced secere pain and I used to have Voltalin(50mg) Suppository (diclofenac sodium) twice daily to get rid of pain. I am also suffering mouth ulcers which are playing a major role to set barrier on chewing, swallowing. These are the result of constipation.
Its the 8th day. Meanwhile throat pain has been decreased remarkably. Today I went to my work and stayed there till noon. I back to home and had my lunch properly for the 1st time. But till evening I am suffering from severe throat & ear pain which causes bad headach. At night I could not have my meal and to get relief I took Ibuprofen B/P 200mg.
I dont know when shall I be able to get back to my normal life. But I would like to encourage people to have their tonsils removed if it makes things too complex.
Pain increases while I wake up from bed. Does anyone know the reason?

I AM 20 YEARS OLD AND ON DAY 7 POST-TONSILLECTOMY. I'M HAVING SHARP PAINS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY THROAT. IT SEEMS TO BE STARTING FROM THE TOOTH AND GOING DOWN TO THE THROAT. I HAVE THIS DISGUSTING SMELL IN MY MOUTH.. I AM SWALLOWING GOOEY, WHITE, DISGUSTING SCABS!! I CAN BARELY EAT OR DRINK.. IT STILL HURTS EVERYTIME I SWALLOW. I HAVEN'T EATEN A DECENT MEAL IN I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG. I'M STARTING TO FEEL NASEAUS ALLLLL THE TIME.. ESPECIALLY IN THE MORNING WHEN I WAKE UP.. THE ONLY PAIN MEDICATION I'VE BEEN ON THROUGH THIS WHOLE HEALING PROCESS IS LIQUID TYLENOL... I DON'T KNOW HOW I'VE DONE IT.. BUT THE PERCOCETTS MAKE ME REALLY SICK...
I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THE REMOVAL OF THE TONSILS TO ANYONE!!!... I WOULDN'T EVEN PUT MY KIDS THROUGH THIS TORTURE! IT'S PURRRRRRE TORTURE.. I'M LIVING IN HELL !!! PLEASE PRAY FOR ME. DOES ANYBODY FEEL MY PAIN OUT THERE? PLEASE WRITE I NEED SOME ADVICE...
THANKS..

Hi JNELL, I am on day 7 of mine as well. Sorry to hear you're in pain. The real pain started for me on day 6. I had to get some more powerful pain killers as my ears and throat really hurt whenever I ate. It was to the point where I just had to go to bed and sleep and not move. I think you should get some better painkillers, they make the pain go away almost 100%!
WOW i am day 8 of my tonsillectomy and im starting to think there is SOME hope... From the second I woke up from surgery I had EXTREME pain in my throat, ears, glands, and tongue. I really think the ears and tongue pain are worse than swallowing. i was on tylenol codeine for the first 4 days which did absolutely NOTHING. i eventually switched to hydrocodone which helped a little. Day 1 and 2 were horrible but I can't even explain the pain of days 3-8. Today I woke up, from only 2 hours of sleep bc thats all i get, and it felt as if i had dried cornflakes lodged into my open sores... WORST pain ever. I dont drink as much as i should anymore... when i do, immediately after my tongue swells, my ears starts pounding, and it feels like someone is stabbing my glands with a knife. I do most my drinking an hour after i take pain meds and i have an ice pack waiting for my neck and a heat pack for my ears
Every four to 5 hours i crush my pills and miz it in some Maalox, that seems to keep my empty stomach as happy as it can get. I had bad acid reflux and gastritis which is probably a blessing in disguise bc id probably be eating the pain meds like candy...
Im hoping from now on i will have a good hour out of the day where the pain subsides....
Did anyone else feel like this on Day 8-9?

HI KELLYELLIE..thanks for the reply. I didn't think I was going to get a response from anyone. I'm glad I'm not going through this ALONE. Yeah, I do have to get better pain killers. I'm seeing my ENT this Friday. Do you know when we will be FULLY recovered.. and are you speaking funny? because I sure am. :-(
Yesterday when I saw my doctor he said that the pain should be gone in 2 -3 days. I'm back at work on Monday :-( He also said that it won't be FULLY healed for another 2 weeks! But at least the pain will go away :-)
And yes I am speaking funny sometimes. Like I have to be careful to talk in a specific way to not hurt my throat! Hang in there!

Hi, Everyone!
My boyfriend is getting his tonsils out next month and they're also "shaving his uvula". I've been reading these posts to see what to expect after the surgery and it sounds like it's going to be pretty unpleasant. I was hoping that someone who has had it done already can answer a question for me... my boyfriend (who has never had any surgery of any kind) INSISTS that he does not need me to take any time off to help him in the days following the surgery. I am only going to be with him the day of to drive him there and bring him home. After reading all of this stuff, I am worried that he might need someone for at least the next couple of days? Am I worrying too much or will he be totally fine without any help? Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thank you!!!

KELLYELLIE.. I Hope your ENT is right ! I'm starting to feel a little better. Thanks so much for the encouragement!

:-( If any one knows what med works for pain better than lortab liquid please respond fast!!!
I'm on Tramadol which is awesome on the pain. Although the last dose I took made me throw up :-(
Courtney, your boyfriend will definitely need time off work. At least 1 week! I am taking 12 days off. The medication and the recovery itself makes you extremely tired. And there is some pain, so I wouldn't recommend working on the first 10 days.

Hey Courtney,
My fiancee was insisting on taking time off to help me out for the first few days post-op but I was having none of that. She picked me up at the hospital a few hours after my surgery (tonsillectomy and uvula shaving)and then stayed with me that evening and eventually went home after I finally convinced her I was okay without her. She did spend time after work with me for the first few days. Admittedly, I seem to have had a much easier experience than most people who post on this board. I didn't need to start taking my pain meds till day 5 or so, and then stopped taking them after day 8 (I still have half the bottle of lortab!). I am now day 21 post-op and have been back to work for a week and eating normally for the last 10 days.
In my case I was thankful for all the horror stories I had read on here cause I was expecting the worst but only had one or two days that I would consider "bad."

Ok, everyone has scared me to death. I am about 7-10 days from HAVING my surgery that I really need to have. I am having my tonsils and adenoids take out and also having the new balloon sinus surgery. I do have a high tolerance for pain but now not sure after reading all of these notes.
Can someone please let me know now what the best pain meds are and what foods I should buy at the grocery store before my surgery. I just want to be prepared for the worst and then hopefully it won't be as bad as some of yours. Also, how do you take the meds during the night when most all of them need to be taked with food? The last thing I need to be doing is throwing up with a throat full of stiches.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Hi again!
Thanks for all the responses! Just to clarify something from my previous post... my boyfriend who is getting his tonils out IS taking time off after the surgery. I was just wondering if I also needed to take time off to stay home and help him afterwards. He doesn't want me to, but I was thinking that maybe he will need help, but that he just doesn't think he will. I'm concerned because judging from what everyone is writing, it sounds like it's going to be pretty painful, maybe more than he is anticipating.
cflo--- your response was really helpful... thanks! I hope that my boyfriend has an experience like yours! I guess that means I can stop worrying so much about it and just hope for the best. I am glad to get a guy's opinion- I think my boyfriend just wants to be alone after the surgery (just like any other time he's sick or not feeling good) and it sounds like that's how you are too! Must be a guy thing. :-) I want to respect that and let him do what he needs to do. Thanks for the advice... I feel better. ;-)
