I have recently stopped smoking as well, 17 Days ago. for the last 2 weeks i have been experiencing this swelling... it has gotten so bad the scale has went up 20 Lbs. i have been staying on a low carb, High protein & Fiber diet to make sure i did not gain weight. My friend has done been through this before and swore by Claritin D. I was nervous to try because i have never been a fan of how the decongestant has made me feel. But i tried 1 and by the end of the first day i was down 10 lbs. and i was able to poop. I don't know the science behind it, i just know it helped alleviate the pain from the swelling

Oh wow am I glad I've found this forum, quit smoking almost 3 weeks ago, a smoker since I was 13 now 39, I've been to local A+E with extreme bloating of abdomen and constipation (the constipation I've had probs with for yrs but this was super bad) can't eat more than about 150ml of food/liquid without exploding outwards, doc says it's gas and I prob have an ulcer (I probably do, yrs of symptoms) and had put me on an acid blocker (Nexium). But now my ankles are gone, I have pure cankles and I know it's connected. I've decided it's IBS brought on by quitting and edema as most of you here have suffered, I will take potassium and magnesium while following a low FODMAP diet to see if it can ease things, I've already been on a non solid diet for 7 days, (yogurt, rice porridge, lots of water etc, I have a huge belly but have lost weight due to such discomfort with eating) but I will see how I do without dairy and the FODMAP foods. Will update...good luck all.

Thats a very interesting idea that the liver is cleansing itself
I smoked for 3 years and have quit for almost 3 weeks now
At first i thought my liver was infected dying or whatever but i read up lots of quitters experience similar feelings
One theory i heard was the lungs growing back in size and putting pressure on your rib cage which is why it hurts at the walls of the body rather than "inside"
One thing i cant explain tho is the swelling in the area of pain

My name is ryan im 21I am just short of 200lbs my beer gut is most noticable ive smoked for 3 years and quite about 3 weeks ago
I have had a sharp pain in my right upper torso that feel like a sore muscle or something like it and it hurts mostly with complex movements of the upper body as well as breathing
The last few days ive taken different advice from people posting in this discussion and i can tell you if you experience similar pain in a similar area the most effect things i have done is drink water sit up straight stretch ever so often and practice deep breathing excercizing
A few cups of water a day should be enough to see results and youll almost immediately feel releif with sitting up straight
Im not sure why this pain is occuring and im not sure yet when it will end ill kerp everyone updated about that
Also if your problems are not effected by these tips id see a doctor just in case
Ive been drinking tea today and its been a little helpful but water is the best solution i think
Im grateful i decided to quit 3 years in rather than 30 i genuinely feel bad for anybody going through what im going through only ten times worse and i hope the tips ive given give some relief
Also i tried pain killers (the suggested doses) and no help at all so im not sure really what to do
But because water is very helpful in easing the pain over time i imagine its got to do with the liver or lungs and not the rib cage directly
One theory is that the liver is cleansing itself and water dilutes the poison
Another that ive had from the beginning is that the mucus i cough up is swollowed bsides any that actually comes out of my mouth abd that mucus is toxic so when i swollow it im poisoning myself and my liver then processes that poison
From there im not sure but water is a good remedy so give my advice a try and good luck

Update: so with the tips i have suggested i can say with certainty that they at least ease the pain
My pain has moved towards my upper left back and its much of a "pain" anymore rather than discomfort and the constant urge to pop my back which is considerably more bareable but the problem is still around
HOPEFULLY ill be able to say that the problem is actually gone in maybe 4 days tops
Ill update again if something significant happens

Update: hopefully ive found the end of my symptoms
After over a week of drinking a lot of water streching deep breathing etc ive found myself now to be without any discomfort or pain and i havent had any water to drink in a day and a half
Today is the first day i have experienced 0% discomfort and im hoping that is the end of that
Also for about a week around the same time i started drinking lots of water i got an aweful cold mild headaches off and on horrible sinuses and feelings a loss of energy just all around aweful and as the cold subsided at about the same rate the pain and discomfort did
So basically drank water and etc for a whole week while i feel like c**p after 4 days in the cold and pain subside and i think its been like 8 or 9 days later im feelings much better
Again i only smoked 3 years and gave up cold so while i expect others who have smoked longer to go through this much worse and longer there is hope just take care of your bodies and hopefully your problems will get better

I quit smoking 2 1/2 years ago. The first 30 days gained 30 lbs and lots of swelling and constipation. Went to doctors....do you know what I get...lay off the salt. I eat no salt but still , especially if I drive a long time or stand in one spot for a long time my calves and ankles feel super tight.also can't seem to lose the weight. FRUSTRATED. I felt better when I was smoking and was a size 0.

I quit smoking over four months ago. I had no problem quitting. I stopped smoking cold turkey. I have had absolutely no cravings to start again. However, even though all doctors say that smoking is very injurious to health, and even though they say that when you've quit, you will feel so much better, this has really not been my experience. Before I stopped smoking––I smoked a pack a day for many, many years––I really felt myself to be in very good health. Since I have stopped, however, I have had many health issues, one of the main ones being oedema of the lower legs, ankles, and feet. As a smoker, my legs, ankles and feet were never swollen. Websites are full of cautionary tales about smoking causing oedema; but my experience is quite the opposite. I have only had this problem since quitting. I am of the opinion that smoking, within moderation, is perhaps not as harmful as they all try and make it out to be, as long as one eats healthily and has an otherwise healthy lifestyle.

One more thing I should add, since giving up smoking, my weight has increased significantly too. I used to be rather slim. Now, I can no longer say that. I am very concerned about this, because I am not diabetic, but I am afraid if I keep on gaining weight like this as a result of quitting smoking, I could at least become pre-diabetic. That will be another health issue to contend with. So much for the health benefits of being a non-smoker!

I quit some time ago (years), but was around a group of smokers and after a few weeks wanted to have a cigarette and took a 4mg cherry flavored nicotine lozenge instead. Then because they tasted OK and curbed the desire, I was up to 4 or 5 per day. After a week, edema hit the right ankle and then the left. I stopped the losenges and started drinking more water to help flush out the nicotine. A week earlier, I stopped low cooncentrations of biotin and minoxidil when the edema first started - just in case these were the cause - no change. So we’ll have to see if the nicotine turns out to be the sole cause.

I can empathize with your distress - you are trying to improve your health and it appears to be going backwards. Part of the issue is the stress you have from not getting answers from professionals. I recommend some damage control. First of all, these are signs of detox. Second, you can manage the symptoms. For Constipation: take 2 Tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil every morning. And drink water - lots of water (I drink 4 27 oz glasses per day). For a boost in energy, eat an apple, a handful of raisins and a handful of nuts (I love cashews). Next: please please eat beets. Beets are natural vasodilators and improve your blood flow and blood pressure for 24 hours after eaten. I eat 1/3 to 1/2 a can of beets most days. You won't fall over dead if you have to skip a day. Finally: have Faith. You are doing the right thing for your body and it will continue to be the right thing even though the medical doctor cannot explain it to you. Give yourself at least 6 months (remember how many many many months you injured your body) before you get excited. You can do this.
