I stopped smoking 2 months ago. I gained about 17 lbs because I was eating like a pig. I cut out sugar, hit the treadmill everyday for 30 minutes and I have lost 9 of the 17 pounds I gained in the first month but my stomach still aches from time to time. I don't know why they tell you on truth commercials what will happen if you smoke but they don't tell you how awful you will be feeling with declining health when you stop. Totally not fair!!

I completely agree! I was looking all around online for some clue about this heartburn/gas thing. I had NO doubt it was caused by my cold-turkey quit, because it happened to me the last time I made a go at it. (I just didn't realize then that the quit itself was responsible). I'm also very relieved to find this page! I'm only on day 2 of my quit (the LAST one! lol), and the pain is intense! I use gas meds/ hearburn meds/ increased excercize/ reduced my caffeine intake, etc. etc. I was even desperate enough to drink water with baking soda! (helped a tiny bit; didn't want to OD on the antacids.) But I'm glad to hear that although it might last a long time- there's still hope. Thank you all so much.

You said it was all a lie, but then completely reiterated everything that was said and said the exact same thing? Maybe read something and make sure you understand it before just resorting to acting like a c**t! Best wishes!

What was color of stools when you had this issue. I quit about a month and a half ago and ever since I been having light brown stools with a yellow tint. Mushy on top of it. Should I stick mainly to fiber?

That is the best suggestion! Thanks. I have quit number of times and experience same side effects which prompted me to restart the addiction. I can confirm that sugar and fruits cause a lot more digestive problems and vigourous excercise is not helping either. I think we have to learn from each other to manage the side effects. Too bad doctors are not really up to speed on side effects of smoking and not that helpful. Keep up your quit and good luck everyone

Thank you for this. I have IBS and severe acid reflux the last few months, but I’m sure not smoking after a bout with bronchitis added insult to injury. My waste is pale too. Anyone have that?? According to a blood test my kidney liver gallbladder and pancreas is supposedly ok. Amazing how trying to be healthier causes illnesses. Lol. Who knows. thanks for this post. It helps to calm me somewhat.

Anyone have severe nausea? Today is day 30. After 50 years and I’m a mess. Sick to stomach, constipation, dizzy, and short tempered...as well as so fatigued.. can anyone help?

I too smoked for over 50 years. After 50 years of absorbing nicotine, and everything else associated with tobacco, you must realise that the digestive system adapts to tobacco and all it's additives. It speeds up digestion and when it suddenly vanishes, the digestive system slows to a crawl. It will eventually recover but you have to allow it a year or two to do so.

5 months no smoking and guts are as unpredictable as ever: looseness, gas, urgency and sometimes pain. Don't feel I can go far from home (am retired so not too much of a problem). I think these side effects of giving up need to be more generally known, not that giving up should be discouraged - just so that people know these problems are normal.
