I had a TVT and vaginal repair done 8 weeks ago. Since then I have had 3 UTIs and I'm now on antibiotics again. I've never had infections like this before and I haven't even had sex yet either.

I had stress incontinence before, that's now gone but I have infections instead! Anyone thinking of having a bladder sling should think very carefully before going ahead. I seem to have swapped one problem for a worse one and by having this op I've opened up a right old can of worms :-(

HI
I had the bladder sling done and I have a bladder infection every month. I didnt know what was happening at first. I felt pressure and had know idea it was a bladder infection. Now I take something every month. I started drinking water daily. Just sips like when you are thirsty and now I only have one every month and a half. It seems to come on faster after having sex. I tried using wipes after and cleaning real good but doesnt help.

Hi,
So sorry to hear from all you women who are suffering from bladder complications etc. I had a 'sling' installed January 2007 for prolapse and a neurogenic bladder. I had a pre-existing autoimmune disease, talk about uninformed consent!!! Not only did the Doctor not tell me it was a permanent surgery but my chance of rejecting it went up exponentially. My autoimmune disease is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, not that big of a deal overall. Neither is it a 'cake-walk'.
I have lived through a horrific nightmare to say the least and am still suffering from the fall-out. Tell every woman you know the 'mesh' they use in the slings is petroleum based and the FDA issued a warning in 2008 to the manufacturers to take the 'mesh' off the market because thousands of women were having problems with it. They tell you only 2% of women reject the material. This information is false and only the tip of the iceberg.
If you are having chronic issues after a 'bladder sling installation', something is wrong!!!! Do not stop advocating for yourself. This is critical. The gynocologist I have now told me the truth about the 'slings'. She said they can erode through the wall, then recede and erode through again. Most women don't know the erosion is happening until they develop a major infection or worse, become 'septic'. Look this term up. It is not pretty!!!!!
My mesh not only structurally failed, ( my Doctor was considered the 'top' surgeon at OHSU for this surgery) as in, it collapsed to the right and wrapped around my right ovary, it eroded through my vaginal wall several times. My Naturopath saved my life as I couldn't get anyone in western medicine to believe what was happening! The erosions would come and go. Only my Naturopath was documenting the erosions. I knew my body wouldn't be able to handle any sort of infection because my white blood count had become abnormally low, this is called leukopenia. I didn't have any immune system left to fight a major infection.
To make matters worse, the urologist I saw and my old gynocologist lied to cover each other's butts. Before I figured out what was happening in 2008, my old gynocologist did tell me she wouldn't cauterize an area on the vault-scar-line because my immune system wouldn't heal it. FIRST-RED-FLAG!! If I had gone 'septic', I would have died!!! I was in excruciating pain for 2 years. It started four months after they installed the 'sling'. I went to a Physical Therapist and did the whole 9 yards to no avail. I am permanently deformed now. The surgeon who removed my 'mesh' did the best he could. Thank God I didn't die, I almost did. The 'mesh' was removed December 2009 and I am still recovering.
My case set a precedent, as the only reports lawyers had been receiving up to that point had to do with 'erosions' and 'infections'. There weren't any reports about the 'sling' going out and wrapping around ovaries?! They have been using this mesh for men's hernias for years. However, muscle tissue is a lot different than vaginal tissue. The rat studies they did on the 'mesh' proved this out. The information has been suppressed, however. This is the worst thing I have heard about since the 'Tuskagee Airmen'. What goes around comes around. It is just so sad that so many women are going to suffer unless we all stand up and say...NO MORE! Take care of yourselves and become MEDICALLY LITERATE!! This is key. What an education was to the 'common person' in the 20th century, medical literacy will be in the 21st century......Thanks for listening, Hijirah

I had the bladder sling surgery in Oct.2010 and had a foley at home for one month,self-cathing the entire time.I went back in in Nov.to have the sling cut so I could void since I hadnt since the surgery maybe even for 6 weeks. Now its March of 2011 and I am having excruciating pain inside my vagina. Its as if theres a knife in there right at the entrance and a wire or something so tight around my female parts in that area and nothing is helping the pain.I havent had sex in years due to this problem and wouldnt even try too at this point.
I have rectocele that was supposed to be repaired at the same time my sling was done and the Dr. didnt do the surgery, she said my rectocele wasnt severe enough to do surgery on.The reason I went in for surgery was cystocele/rectocele..to have it all fixed and go on living my life. Now Im supposed to reach in my vagina and physically push my rectum up into place to use the bathroom.I take milk of magnesia every night and azo standard or urine pills everyday along with cranberry pills.(the strongest ones they make)With no help am still suffering.I called the Drs. office last week to make and appointment and she said she would have the nurse call me back and days later no call from the nurse on several different occasions. She will be reported and I will be taking action against the Drs. who performed this surgery on me.
I would go back to my bladder between my legs anyday than to suffer this way.
I really hope if your planning to have this surgery that you listen to all the stories and find a very good surgeon to perform your surgery.
God Bless All

That's so ridiculous coming from someone who uses "learnt" in their comment!  I appreciate all the comments, including the ones with words, symptoms, and diagnosis spelled incorrectly...this is a condition/surgery that has had some devastating effects for some, and if they were Doctor's they wouldn't be asking questions for help here! People who are so arrogant to judge how well others type and spell should first judge their own...as the old saying goes,"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

Aw c**p...i'm only 27 and I have to get the surgery but by how everyone is sounding i'm so nervous. The doctor said it's 95% effective, but as soon as I have a kid it wont work anymore. I don't want to have to deal with  more trouble, especially a possible hysterectomy. Oh these forums...never a good idea for me to read! Advice anyone?

I had surgery in June of 2011. I always have bleeding from my urethra and I'm on my 3rd bladder infection!!! At this point I'm going to see my PCP to see what I need to do to get the sling taken out. My vagina has constant burning pain and I haven't been able to have sexual intercourse with my husband due to the pain I experience. This was one of the worst surgeries I have ever had. I would never suggest it it to anyone. I had it to help with the leakage after having 4 children all vaginal births over a 19 year span. It has ruined my life at this point. I'm praying that I can be fixed!!!

Hi

I had my bladder put in a sling years ago. Now for the last eight weeks I have had 5 lots of antibiotics because of cystitis. I went to the doctor's office this morning and he said I need to see a urologist. I think he should have said that sooner. I will have to wait quite a while for an appointment but he said he will put me on low grade antibiotics until I get my appointment. I was so glad to read about your problems. I felt embarrassed going to the doctor's office so often. Felt like a hypocondriac but it hurts a lot and I need to be near a washroom all the time.

I had the monarc sling done in nov.2011 and i have a bladder infection almost all the time and have been on all kinds of meds including IV meds over 3 days. Im on meds right now for one and its been 6 days and i still feel like i have a bladder infection. Its making me tired and im not sure if its from infection or from just sick of being sick! I always have pressure and inorder to empty my bladder i have to push it out. I still have pain during sex too if the angle is offsomedays worse then others. I hate living like this.

Im dealing with the same situation and i sware its the mesh but no one really wants to touch me because of liability. Im always going to the doctor and getting antiobiotics and once an IV that i had to keep going back for three days to get the meds that way because it was in my kidneys. I always have pressure and it sometimes hurts to pee like my whole bladder is going to fall out.
