First off I would like to mention that I had the mirena put in 3 years ago because my horrible period pains and never had a problem with it. I didn't bleed after insertion and the mild cramps when away that day. I also never had a period for the year that I had it in. And I never had pain!:)
My husband actually pulled it out of me so we could have our son. Also I have a tilted uterus that tilts to the left. Which I feel might be the reason that my cramps and pains are ALWAYS on my left side.
4 days prior to getting this new mirena put in I was having cramp-like pains so we thought my period was coming (I was almost a month late) and since the mirena helped with my horrible pains before we wanted to get it placed before my period came to try and avoid the pain, vomiting and fainting that go along with my period. . My periods are HORRIBLE ! The pain is so severe that i start shaking like crazy, i have cold and hot flashes, my bowls start releasing, im throwing up, hard time breathing and i eventually faint. (I have fainted in public bathrooms and slamed my head on the tile) I was told I most likely have endometriosis but won't have the proper diagnosis untill a surgeon goes in through my bellybutton (laproscopy) and does a biopsy.
So anyways the forth day of cramps I got the mirena put in and the doctor said to my husband and I that she cut the strings long so we could check on them . Getting it place inside of me was so painful just like the first time. But this time the pain was so severe. I was shaking, sweating, felt freezing, nauseous and I was bleeding. I went to the ER because we were 2 1/2 hours from getting home and I couldn't make it that long in this much pain. They did blood work, pain management and an ultrasound. They gave me a total of 8ml of morphine which did NOTHING (some meds don't work on everyone) so they gave me dilaudid which helped a little. Blood came back normal and so did ultrasound. The doctor came in and said that this pain is NOT EVER normal and that if my pain gets worse in the next few days or if the pain comes back next month for my cycle to go get a CT scan. He prescribed me hydrocodone for pain which doesn't help at all and he discharged me.
2 weeks later I was still bleeding and the pain was worse. It was waking me up at night and was so bad I would vomit and feel faint and cold while sweating. My husband said "let's check for your strings to make sure it's in place" so we checked, and checked and checked. No stings. So we went to the local ER and explained what was going on. The doctor (who is an amazing doctor..he treated my son and very comfortable with him and trust him) did a pelvic exam to see if he could find the strings and he could not. So he ordered an ultrasound which came back that the mirena was still in my uterus. So he said he didn't feel the need to do an x-ray since it didn't look implanted in or out of my uterus. But I now have the entire IUD AND it's strings in my uterus.
I don't know if anyone has gone through something like me?? I'm at the point of just having it removed somehow since the strings are in my uterus somehow. I would have to drive 4 hours to see a gynecologist and see if this is from having endometriosis or if it is indeed the mirena causing me all this severe pain.
If anyone could please let me know their experience with the mirena I would greatly appreciate it. Especially if your strings are in your uterus too and what you did to get comfort that it's still in place all the time .
