Next month, Sept itwill be 1 year since I had the most painful Open MRI that left bruising that No One: personal doctor or head of radiology of Chester Co hospital would address. Open MRI of West Chester was down right intimidating & refused to address what had happened. As bruising & pain subsided everyone just blew this off. Tried to document & get case studies of the history of this occurrence but ran into road blocks. Would really like to see accountability of this Open MRI of West Chester so this would never happen to snyone else.
Can not term the pain that occurred merely as discomfort. After 20 hours of back labor pain before natural vaginal delivery in child birth this Open MRI was right there for pain. I've never been over weight, wasn't @ the time of this procedure. Didnt realize had coins in the pocket of metal zip off shorts I had thought to wear for knee area. Didn't have gown on.Never had any MRIs Open or other wise -didnt know. Had gone all summer with the torn meniscus & just was afraid if I stopped it,the diagnosis would be delayed.
Tears were running down my face & I also clutched my teeth not wanting to stop to prolong a diagnosis finally after an entire summer of knee pain. Tech dismissed me saying how painful it was(child birth equal).

Thank you for confirming what I suspected. The doctors act as if it is your fault..it was excruciating for me . I have metal fillings from the early 70's..and a titanium knee. My face moved like I was in a wind tunnel, pain radiated from my spine to my right foot. (tnr on lt. Knee) I jerked around like a dissected frog. I had taken pain meds, but did not help. They had to knock me out for the next two mri’s.

I just had MRI for possible torn rotator cuff. The pain of the MRI scan was so intense I considered stopping the scan. The guy running the machine told me in a flippant way that the MRI "does not cause pain". I had one 12 years ago on my other shoulder that was painless. That was not the case this time. I am glad to see that I am not alone in this. The technicians need to wake up and warn us about this. I should have taken a pain killer before the scan.
I experienced intense cramping w a pelvic mri today as well!! I also had lower lumbar scan and half way thru i would say i experienced what felt like someone drugged me.... they did not, however!!!! It started at my feet and worked up to my head! 'Y heart raced and I began to panic! I thought i was having a panic attack but was able to calm myself down! I've never had a panic attack before!!!
Well, it's nice to know I am not crazy. I had an MRI on my right foot 3 days ago, and my foot is still on fire. (I had a spinal MRI about 15 years ago with no problems). This one caused pain about halfway into it. I am hoping it will stop soon...
Everyone interested in why you have pain after an MRI...look biological effects of gradient magnetic fields on the body.
The precautions of MRIs are done prior to having an MRI . If any other problems may exsist from an MRI it would be mentioned from the speacilist..The one thing I could think of it collection of metals in a persons body..not actual pearcings or as such but heavy metals from a lifetime of dietary..worth the Google perhaps?
I just had an mri of my foot. The pain was like nothing i've ever felt before. Im in med field and struggled to get through the study. I could feel the rotating pulses ripping through my foot. I was tearing up, and my pain tolerance is very high. Could not get off table either. Seeing this a lot here. Again tech said it was the position of my foot. Hmm yet my foot is in that same position when i walk.....what gives??
Hi, I just read your story about the MRI horrible experience. I'm scheduled for a brain MRI tomorrow and considering cancelling. I have severe nonstop vertigo for 5 weeks now, and want to know if it's from my brain, suggested by my neurologist.
How did you recover? How are you?
I'm scared of getting the MRI because I've read so many stories of what could happen. Plus I figure it's so unnatural to have giant magnets invading my organs!!
Please tell me what other symptoms you had or if you think I should risk the MRI. Thanks, hope you are ok.

I would not be worried with your situation, I had a tear between my quad and kneecap which caused my pain.When I had the MRI of my back before my disc surgery, I had no issues. The position they put my knee in caused the pain as it strained my already injured muscular tissues. I am all healed now the severe pain only lasted a few days and responded to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
My partner just finished her mri on her head and is in tears from extreme pain during said scan. Is this normal
Thanks for all the comments here. I just had an MRI done yesterday, no contrast, on my lower leg. This morning it's bothering me more than usual, and now I know why. For me, it's not a big deal, but I do think they should tell you beforehand that pain can be a side effect of MRI.
