I had a sudden sneeze with a mouthful of coffee. I held it and i had no voice for a month! Now my voice is lower - like I blew out one of the higher toned vocal cords. Also possibly stinky breath in the months following. Did I kill a vocal cord?

well i should welcome myself to this odd group. was having a bit of cold and cough and suddenly one day i sneezed hard and had a severe pain in my throat. wasn't sure what that was all about so ignored it but sure enough with the next sneeze it became only worse. i do not have a history of holding my sneeze but have done it sometimes. now i can feel a lump on my left side of the throat and it pains severely every time i sneeze and my throat is very husky and feels raw when swallowing anything. any confirmed diagnosis or successful treatment?

Ive had this pain since I caught a severe upper respiratory infection. During a conf call at work I held in a sneeze and bang!, my adam's apple voice box area hurt so bad I could hardly swallow. The next day or two, my voice was mostly gone. This was mid October, its now end March, so 4 months and it still hurts at night if I lay my head a certain direction. No other real effects than that now. I assume torn cartilage and we'll see if it heals or if I have to do something if it ever gets worse. No doc visits, but lots of research.

Maybe people hold it in when they are sick and don't want to spray their germs over everyone. Or in my case I get hayfever and sneeze 30 times in one go haha and if you let all them out you get covered in snot from the spray... so there are reasons people hold them in Mr Doc. Happy

My husband has some the same thing hence me googling and finding this site. He was driving so held his sneeze in and heard two clicks and was in a lot of pain and couldn't swallow. Went to a and e then ent and they said they thought he had torn his thyroid cartilage. Put a camera down his throat but whilst they could see trauma thought it would heal on its own. It has got worse and he sounds like he has laryngitis and Adams apple looks really swollen so he went back in tonight and is having a scan in the morning to see exactly what is going on

Hi I held a sneeze in as well Monday and had the pain and started losing my voice but not completely... felt a crackling sound today when I swallowed saliva and the pain shot up from a 2/10 to 10. Please let me know what the findings are from your visit.

Hi Folks - had the same symptoms. Went to the doctor, did xrays and something called a fluid challenge. They determined that in my case it was a pulled muscle inside my throat.

This exact same thing happened to me. I sing and play in a band. I sneezed and felt my throat start hurting maybe 4 days ago. My voice got low as if I had a bad cold, then tonight I was just reading an article on the internet and swallowed randomly, and suddenly *CLICK!* in my throat and "Ouch." It felt like it was in the middle of the area behind my Adam's apply. I touched around it and something seemed to "move" back into place but not in the clicking fashion. Now about 15 minutes later it seems the pain and inflammation is on the right side.

This SUCKS!!! And is very scary!

Another website says you may have fractured your larynx. I forgot to save the website so I can't put it here but you can probably google again and find the info.

Same damn thing happened to me today. I sneezed, and felt like something launched into my throat. Ever since then my Adam's apple area hurts like hell when swallowing. I'm eating now hoping that will help. I sing for a living so this is not convenient.
