Okay, this is what I have:
-Started off with a sore throat and some sinus drainage
-Progressed to an ear ache depending on which side I slept on
-Worse in dry weather
-Progressed to a sharp cut like feeling on one side of my throat
-The pain has switched sides (started off on my right and is now on my left)
-I don't have Tonsils, don't smoke, don't drink
-Doctor said it was viral and said I had to wait it out... back during Thanksgiving
-My girlfriend now has it as well, and she's on amoxy for acne control (500 mg antibiotic) hasn't changed what she has
-It comes and goes
-Better when I have less mucus (mucinex may be my only hope)
So from what I've read most people are saying it's bacterial... NOPE antibiotics don't help. Most relate it to tonsils, I DON'T HAVE THEM. They relate it to smoking NEVER SMOKED EVER, they relate it to drinking NEVER HAVE DRUNKEN ALCOHOL BEFORE. Pretty much I've looked all over the internet, lots of people with the same problem, no one with any answers. If it's viral I'd still like to know what it is.

You have strep throat, go to the doctor and they will fix it right up. Ask them to do a standard strep test, results in 10 minutes

Try rinsing and then gargling with a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. I am NOT a doctor, of course, but this really helps with me when I get canker sores in my mouth. I recently got some in my throat which led me here. The gargling helps with that. For sores in your mouth, rinsing (swishing) will hurt at first. Push through the pain until it stops. It will! :-)

i had this pain before in the back of my throat and saw the same white thing...i went to the doctor and it turned out that it was a piece of food stuck in my throat and it was infecting the area which caused the pain for about 3 days

I have had the same exact thing this entire week. I went to the doctor today and got tested for strep but I don't seem to have it :/. Basically he prescribed a prescription so hope that ends up working out. But I have had the SAME EXACT symptoms and it hurts like CRAZY. It is just the most uncomfortable feeling and doesn't seem to go away. If anybody gets most information on what exactly this is please let me know!

I've been to 3 doctors and finally the most recent one thought of Mono as a possibility, and then I did a blood test and tested positive.
I have the same symptoms you have and it spreads through saliva/kissing so that would explain why your girlfriend has it.
I stopped kissing/sharing drinks with my girlfriend but will have no clue for 3-5 weeks now if I have given it to her because usually the symptoms show up a few weeks after.
With Mono, you can't be treated, you're just gonna have the wait it out and rest LOTS so your body can produce the immunity it needs so you'll never have mono again. At the same time, avoid sharing drinks and kissing, and also avoid contact sports as you may rupture your spleen/liver if they are enlarged.

HAppy to see this thread, NOT happy to see so many others suffering.....exact same issues...Sharp pain in right side of my throat in one specific area, almost like I swallowed a chip and it got lodged (much like another user stated) .... I had this about 3-4 days last week, few days of freedom, and then it returned...on another 4 days now...seeing a school nurse at the community college tomorrow, other than that Im screwed since good ol' us government just allowed the canceling of my bene's on my 23rd. tried gurgling vinegar, hot water, irritation led me to wiggling my finger around in there to get the "something" out... even tried slugging down a tall glass of hot water and purging to see if it would come out... its clear some of you seem to think its an infection.... could be true, this is the first year in my life I have EVER had allergies ( i now feel your pain) and had a horrible sinus infection in earlier weeks.

i went to an experienced GP, and was told to go home and take a couple of tylenol. it has been on and off for about 3 years, but usually by the time i got to the doctors, the sensation had gone away on its own. I was told it was the globus sensation, the feeling of something like a lump in the throat, making me experience an extremely sharp pain in the bottom left of my throat when i swallow, and when i breathe deep. I went home after, and shoved down two tylenol. in a half hour (the time the tylenol had kicked in) it was gone. Because the reason is that there's nothing actually in your throat, its a sensation. so when you take away the pain, the sensation is gone. This still happens, but the tylenol trick works for me... good luck, i hope i could help.

Last night I felt like something was stuck in my throat.I kept drinking plenty of water thinking that it would go away but it just got worse.
Then I started feeeling a sharp pain in the right side of my throat.It feels like a bone is poking my throat.Which is not the case because I didn't even eat anything that had bones in it.It's very painful when I swollow and when I talk I can feel it there in my throat.
Its soo crazy I have never experienced anything like this before.I got scared and went to the er last night.I was probably there about 5hrs.They did a swop on the back of my throat to test me for strep throat.It came back negative soo that can't be it.They gave me something to num my throat it helped for a while until it wore off and the pain came back.Then they gave me a shot of steriods.It hurt like hell.Im still sore from that.I was finally able to go to sleep at the wee hrs of the morning.BUt I woke up this morning and the pain is back.
I don't know what to do.IM really scared.I just want it to go away.

About 7 months ago I felt like something was stuck in my throat. A sharp pain near the center of my throat. I went to the ER and they did nothing. They sent me to a throat doctor who found a cyst. I tried antibiotics and other natural remedies, but nothing seemed to work. I finally gave in and had my doctor removed not one, but two cysts from my throat that are benign. This was in November of this year. It is now January and suddenly out of no where the sharp pain near the center of my throat is back. It is very painful even when I do not swallow. So, my question. Could it be something else other than a cyst? Like a bacterial infection? Any recommendations on what I should do next? I am thinking about getting a second opinion. Thank you.

Hi every one i once had a sharp pain in my throat / neck sometimes it felt as if it was under my tonsils like a sharp feeling like a little bit of glass was stuck and other times it felt it was moving to under my tongue.... well it was it wasn't until my neck swelled up i found out it was salivary stones. Little or large stones that form in your salivary glands and bloke the tubes witch causes pain lucky for me the stones made there way up the tube into my mouth under my tongue,then popped out i am waiting to go back for x-ray to make sure all clear..!!
But this did just start as a sharp pain in my neck that went on for months before i found other sign's..!!
The pain was never constant would just come and go.

I HAD THIS PROBLEM , AND FOR ME IT WAS WHITE BACTERIA AT THE BACK OF THE THROAT.. IT WAS DEEP SO YOU COULDN'T SEE THEM BUT THE WAY TO FIX THIS IS :
