Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

I still have SOB and it is now driving me insane!Even my doctor has given up because everything he suggests or tries doesn't have any effect....
So, no more Doctors, I'm just gonna let this one ride itself out.

I am 52 and recently quit (7 weeks ago) after smoking since my teens, I had the occasional SOB whilst smoking usually when I had a chest infection,, but since giving up am constantly short of breathe, and yes I believe its from not breathing deeply and also the muck accumulated on my chest. Everyone told me I would get a rotten cold after giving up and would cough up all the muck, but have had neither, Glad to hear I am not alone.. I went cold turkey no help... keep up the good work everyone the $$$ is keeping me going.

Yesterday was a very bad day for me, not only for sob but in general. woke up at 4 in the morning. ate breakfast waited till 9 got my lil grandson who is 7 got my lil jaCK RUSSELL who is 11 went out for a day at the beach on my nice lil scooter 50cc. On the main road to the beach here in Dania fl. going about 40 mph when all of a sudden about 1/2 mile from the beach the power belt that drives the wheel broke. now we are stranded call AAA which i ve been a member since 1978 got motorcycle tow on my AAA they said it would be about 45 mins. after an hour and a half call back , to see whats wrong They said he was 5 mins away saw his truck coming. He stoped a half block away , sucked something up his nose waited 5 mins to see whats wrong then he started moving and passed us for about half a block I m going whats wrong with this driver, then he emerges from his truck walks back ask, me if thats my dog , I said yes, he then said he can t take my dog company policy, goes back gets in his truck and drives off. now Im getting a lil, mad never heard that before 12 pound dog no ride. called AAA back explain what happen they said another tow truck on the way, 2 more hours passed tow company said they could not find street, its the only one to the beach how could you not find it. they said they were cancelling order. called AAA back. said they had no more trucks at the moment could be a few hours. been standing in this hot sun now for 5 1/2 hours no shade anywhere, ready to pass out , can t breath going fast now. some guy that had seen us standind there for hours stops and ask whats wrong, I explain to him and he calls AAA they give him a bunch of crap he sees i can t breath and calls 911 took me to E R they got me feeling good and released me. got ride back to my scooter 4 hrs later. the guy was still there watching it for me said he had called AAA 8 times no luck i thanked him. called my friend with a long rope , towed it home. I ve cooled off a little been on the phone now for hours with AAA still no good reason for no pick up.
I was a very heavy smoker for 20 years. I drove for a living so I lit up every delivery. So atleast a pack on a light day probably sometimes 2 or more a day. Today is Wednesday morning. Monday was the first day I had no cigs all day. Saturday I started cutting down dramatically. Sunday night the wheezing started in my throat. From my research I guess its the tar cleaning itself out of my lungs Monday all day my chest was tight and hurt but I could bare it. The shortness of breathe came and went. As it got later Monday night it got worse and worse. I tried to sleep and I could not. I have quit smoking so may times and after the first day would go back to smoking, not because of the need to smoke, but because my body did not want to put up with the pain it must go through to get better. I feel like I am going through withdrawal and I have been a drug addict, which honestly is the truth. This is an evil drug and it has hurt us for many years. Well any way back to my story I could not sleep Monday night into Tuesday. I stayed up all night and around 5am the breathing got so bad I had to walk down the street to the hospital. Not to far luckily I live across the street. Thank god or I may have been dead because I induced a asthma attack on myself by forgetting to breath or something I dont know.Well at the hospital They just gave me oxygen and pills to get better. It helped right away. I left the hospital and returned home after 2 hours. I then was able to sleep for 6 hours or so., But as soon as I awoke I could feel the wheezing sensation starting again. I knew this day would be worse then the previous.Well, I guess I was right. I been forcing myself to breathe , I cant even lay down because it gets so tight and cannot breathe. At least now I know it is from quitting smoking. I learned that from reading all these similar posts. It is now almost 6 am Wednesday. I did get a prescription for some things yesterday so hopefully when I get paid I can get them. Well all the best to the rest of you.I dont want to suffer like this ever again so let us make sure we all quit this time and get through this together and never have to deal with this crap again. Good luck every one.
I have been having the need to yawn too to get a deep breath. I have quit smoking now for about a month. I think the best thing to do is stay relaxed and know your body works in weird ways sometimes. Do breathing exercises to help the pressure icky feeling to stop. Take a nice big breath through your nose hold it as long as you can then exhale through your mouth it makes me feel a lot better.
thankyou each and every one of you for taking the time to post. 9 wks smoke free for me and counting, but man what a journey. So many body sensations and the sob, thought I was dying til I started reading forums like this. And doctors? They just want to medicate you and call you neurotic and hyperchondriac. Yet all we need to continue the healing is to know that we are not dying, which helps alleviate the anxiety, which helps us to relax, breathe, and continue the healing. I'd be a medicated zombie having weekly psychiatrist appointments which would then be used against me in my future if I let doctors decide what's 'best' for me. (And how dare I try and tell them what I think I might be suffering from). Why aren't people told of the sob, weepiness and foggy-ness that can happen?I felt like a space cadet for a few weeks. Nearly had a few minor car accidents dut to feeling spacey too.Couldn't remember things, couldn't focus on conversations.Constipation at first too! I'm looking forward to the rest of my life as a non-smoker, I'm 43 and tried 1000 times and all methods to quit. One day, 9 wks ago I just finally outgrew the need to punish myself anymore. And thankyou to Louise L Hay's books, I am free. And the sob and lump feeling in my throat are decreasing each week. hang in there quitters, it's worth it. I hold my head up so high now and my skin glows, and best of all, I want to be near people and allow them to get close to me,knowing I am clean, no rotten breath, and I am lovable. No more self abuse ever! And it all started with quitting.
Dean remember that if your overweight it can take a year or a little longer for your S O B to go away, I know that you said your 45 lbs overweight that equal about 5 extra months of S O B. Today is my 100 Day of quiting and severe S O B I started walking a little today to see if it will help me sleep better at night, I take ,50 mg of zannax but no help. good luck everone
You know Dean I know how bad S O B can be, I was on this web site and they were talking about Hydrogen Peroxide being used as treatments for S O B and other lung ailments, so I google it I think this is what every one on these threads should do.My S O B is getting better its now 102 days and going strong. hope this helps every one .
The only thing that helps me is hydrogen peroxide mixed 10 to 1 with distilled water . Makes you breath like a child again. make sure you use medical peroxide only 35 %
