Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

Smoked almost 40 years just quit one day been 3 weeks now, I cant breath at all it seems like. I sweat just sitting here almost like it takes everything I have to breathe. I feel miserable like you never get sick, but I don't feel like doing anything most in part of not being able to breathe. I told my wife today I might start smoking again just so I can breathe again. Just typing this out I am exhausted...just can't breathe.

Hang in there mate!
See a doctor but next to that it is common unfortunately and it will get better after a while as well it won’t be as severe all the time. Drink lots of water/tea and if you can’t manage it use bronchodilators, they take of the edge. One page back I posted my two cents. Let you us know if there is anything you like to know.
All the best.

Kind of a late reply, but I totally get that too. I quit smoking twice. I’m on my second go around now. The first time I quit I did what you’re talking about for about a week! Would be ABOUT to go into a deep sleep and BAM I feels like I can’t breath for a split second and I wake up thinking omg I almost died my body is suffocating. After about a week it went away, it went away slowly though. I’m sure yours did. Thought I’d let you know you’re not alone.

You wrote everything I have experienced just in the past three weeks. Reading your post and the others here are helping me immensely. I quit at the start of a mild sinusitis event that turned into pneumonia that cleared in ten days. About three days after I quit I became what I thought was asthmatic. I have since had all those tests, too, as well as the same rounds of antibiotics, etc. What people need to know is "STARTING SMOKING THEN QUITTING WILL CAUSE UNCONTROLLABLE ANXIETY, MILD TO SEVERE WHEEZING, AND SHORTNESS OF BREATH FOR AN UNSPECIFIED PERIOD OF TIME WHICH WILL SCARE YOU, COST YOU HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, AND MAKE YOU MISERABLE." This is what should be printed on packs.
