Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

I think that most of the long time S O B people, celia was all killed off when they smoked and when its all dead it will not grow back so when you stop smoking, you cant cough up anything because you have no sweepers to get the mucus moving so there is no coughing up the tar in your lungs , and it just sets there blocking your airways, just my 1.28 cent opinion.
Yes it does makes sense....

I really dont know that the body will find some way to rid itself of the junk in the lungs, I see that alot of older peop[e that have smoked for a very long time some how overcomes this problem, I just dont understand how. people that only smoked a few years have a greater chance of fast recovery, but alot of them dont, so i really dont understand the reason why,

Go get a full workup at the doctors. Have them xray the lungs. If it comes out clean hopefully it will put your mind at ease.
Angel 123 I read your post where you bought a oximeter and also i see that your on oxygen, without the oxygen what is your sitting readout on your meter???
I have had every test under the sun cat scans x-rays all of it and my breathing is just getting worse
You can get one from ebay or amazon for under 20 dollars. Works great. When my anxiety is high, i try it out and clams me knowing my pulse and oxygen level is good. Keith
If all the test are good then it could be anxiety and just how the lungs are healing. All my test are fine and still have SOB not bad like in the beginning. .
My lowest reading was 73 without oxygen...which was really bad....generally, at rest without oxygen it fluctuated around the middle 80's....with oxygen at rest it's 97-99, with activity it's 90-93....I am told that anything above 90 is good. Mind you...my husband who has not quit has a reading of 100! Which is bullcrap!!!!!
Thats what I dont understand. my oxygen level is between 93 and 98 and i dont use oxygen and I have been quit for over 15 months now.
I know acid reflux or gerd can cause SOB. I know when mine kicks in so does the SOB. I have been taking Zantac 150 which has been helping. Isn't funny how we quit and get SOB it's like smoking kept our lungs paralyzed? I don't understand why doctors can't explain why this SOB lingers for so long. I'm still waiting to feel better than I did as a smoker which was 13 months ago.
It certainly is. I am a 72-year-old cameraman (now a writer); I've smoked a pack a day since I was 16, until two years ago, when I reduced it to half a pack, and then two or three a day. Now I've stopped, but it's no joy ride. (unless you're someone who never really smoke that much anyway. They're the people who tell how great quitting is) For the first few days, I coughed so much; was so short of breath, I thought I might have something horrible. But the x-ray was clear and on the spirometer I was normal. It's been two week now. I'm still mildly short of breath, I still cough like crazy, especially at night when I lie down and gravity allows mucus to rise, making my lungs wheeze and whistle like an old boiler, which is actually very disturbing. It is, however, beginning to ease off now. The mucus that your lungs produce as they heal is loosening, so the cough isn't so tortuous.
But I have a tip that may help. Ask your doctor to prescribe an inhaler (salbutamol) with a dose rate of three double inhalations per day. It opens the tiny vents that get clogged as your lungs expel all the gunk, and makes it easier to breath.
Hope this help. Don't give up.
Chris.
I am now at 60 day and for everyone who have assisted I must say thank you. I am 75 % myself today and for the past (4) days. SOB intermitenetly. BP ? . Cause I have not checked it in a while, hope that it is ok. Anxiety, slight tingle fingers.
The left side of my head feels slightly funny at times. Subsequentky, by me skipping, not eating or missing meals brings on a general unwell felling.
